Desert Adventures in the Merzouga Region
Day 10: Farewell to the Sahara: A Final Day of Desert Magic
Reflecting on the last day in the Merzouga Region, Robert shares his Sahara Desert tour experiences, savoring Moroccan flavors and starlit memories.
Adios, Sahara!
As the sun sets on our incredible journey through the Merzouga Region, I find myself reflecting on the magic we've experienced. This final day was a poignant reminder of the Sahara's beauty and the warmth of its people. It's hard to believe our desert adventure is coming to an end, but the memories we've made will last a lifetime.
The day began with a hearty breakfast at Café Restaurant Les Amis. The Moroccan sun was just starting to peek over the horizon, painting the sky in hues of orange and pink. I savored the last of the mint tea, a ritual that had become synonymous with our mornings here. The strong, sweet flavor was the perfect fuel for the day's adventures. After breakfast, we packed up our campsite, a slightly melancholic task, knowing this was our last time doing so on this trip. We reminisced about the laughter, the stories, and the sheer awe we felt each night under the starlit sky.

Our main event for the day was, of course, more Sahara Desert exploration. How could we leave without one last dance with the dunes? We opted for a shorter tour this time, focusing on soaking in the vastness and serenity of the landscape. The endless expanse of sand, sculpted by the wind into mesmerizing patterns, always leaves me speechless. It’s a humbling experience, a reminder of nature’s power and artistry. The friends and I spent hours walking, talking, and simply being present in the moment. We climbed to the top of one of the highest dunes, and just sat there, taking in the panoramic view. The silence was broken only by the gentle whisper of the wind, a sound that will forever be etched in my memory.

The desert is a vast and timeless canvas, where every grain of sand tells a story of resilience and beauty.
Lunch was at Cafe Snack Restaurant Said. This place had a lively, casual vibe that was just what we needed after our morning in the quiet desert. The menu was a delightful mix of traditional Moroccan dishes and familiar snacks. I decided to try the Tajine Kefta Œuf, a flavorful meatball tagine with eggs. It was rich, savory, and incredibly satisfying. Klara would have loved this place – she always appreciates a good tagine. The others went for the Salade Marocaine and various sandwiches, all equally delicious. What struck me most about Cafe Snack Restaurant Said was the warm hospitality. The staff were incredibly friendly and welcoming, making us feel like part of their community. It’s these personal touches that truly elevate a dining experience. The atmosphere was relaxed and jovial, filled with the chatter of locals and fellow travelers. It was the perfect spot to recharge and reflect on our journey.

As the afternoon waned, we decided to check out the Kasbah Merzouga Bar. I must admit, I was curious. I’m not usually one for bars, but the idea of a desert oasis with cold drinks was too tempting to resist. The bar had a rustic charm, with traditional Moroccan décor and a laid-back atmosphere. We sat outside, sipping on some local beverages and enjoying the cool evening breeze. It was a great way to unwind and share stories from our trip. We laughed about our camel riding escapades, our attempts at bargaining in the souks, and the time I almost got lost in the dunes. It was a perfect moment of camaraderie, a reminder of the bonds we’d forged during our time together. The Kasbah Merzouga Bar offered a selection of drinks, from local wines to refreshing cocktails. The bartender was a friendly chap, happy to share stories about the region and offer recommendations for our next adventure. The ambiance was relaxed and inviting, with soft lighting and traditional music playing in the background.

For our final dinner, we chose Snack Mustapha. This unassuming spot turned out to be a culinary gem. The menu featured authentic Moroccan flavors, and every dish was prepared with love and care. I opted for the grilled lamb, which was tender, juicy, and bursting with flavor. The spices were perfectly balanced, creating a symphony of tastes that danced on my palate. The others tried the tagines and couscous, all raving about the quality and authenticity of the food. Snack Mustapha was more than just a restaurant; it was a celebration of local culture and cuisine. The staff were passionate about their food, eager to share their culinary heritage with us. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, making us feel like honored guests. It was the perfect way to end our culinary journey through the Merzouga Region.

As the day drew to a close, we found ourselves back at our campsite, watching the stars emerge in the inky sky. The Sahara at night is an experience unlike any other. The stars seem brighter, closer, as if you could reach out and touch them. We sat in comfortable silence, each lost in our own thoughts, reflecting on the incredible journey we had shared. We reminisced about the challenges we had overcome, the sights we had seen, and the friendships we had forged. The desert had a way of stripping away the superficial, leaving only the essential. It was a time for introspection, for gratitude, and for dreaming of future adventures.
Before drifting off to sleep, I took one last look at the Sahara. The dunes glowed softly under the moonlight, their shapes shifting and changing with the wind. It was a scene of ethereal beauty, a reminder of the magic that exists in this world. I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience this incredible place, to connect with nature, and to share it all with my friends. As I closed my eyes, I knew that the Sahara would forever hold a special place in my heart. I thought of Klara and Naomi, wishing they could have been here to share this experience with me. I made a mental note to bring them back someday, to show them the beauty and wonder of the desert.
