Family Adventure in Chiang Mai
Day 3: Mountain Highs and Reggae Vibes: A Day Exploring Chiang Mai's Soul
Discover the spiritual heights of Doi Suthep, the cultural richness of Hmong Village, and the vibrant reggae scene of Chiang Mai.
Chiang Mai's Rhythms: From Temple Bells to Reggae Beats
Today was all about experiencing the multifaceted soul of Chiang Mai. From the serene heights of Doi Suthep to the lively rhythms of a local reggae bar, it was a day filled with cultural immersion and good vibes. Naomi was particularly excited about seeing the views from the mountain, while Klara was keen to explore the local crafts. I was personally looking forward to trying some authentic Northern Thai cuisine.
The day started bright and early with breakfast at Nun’s Restaurant. It's a small spot, but the flavors were anything but. I opted for the Khao Soi, a Northern Thai specialty, and let me tell you, it was the perfect way to kickstart a day of exploring. The creamy coconut curry broth, the tender noodles, and that crispy noodle topping – pure perfection! Naomi, of course, went for the mango sticky rice, a classic that never fails to bring a smile to her face. Klara enjoyed a lighter Thai omelet, fueling up for our mountain adventure.
After breakfast, we hopped in a songthaew – those red trucks that are ubiquitous in Chiang Mai – and began our ascent to Doi Suthep-Pui National Park. The ride up was an experience in itself, winding through lush greenery and offering glimpses of the city below. The air grew cooler as we climbed higher, a welcome change from the warmth of the city. It reminded me of the hills back home in Linstead, Jamaica, though with a distinctly Thai twist.
Our first stop was Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, the iconic temple perched high on the mountain. The temple is beautiful, and the climb up the Naga staircase was worth every step. The intricate carvings, the golden chedi, and the panoramic views of Chiang Mai spread out before us were breathtaking. Naomi was fascinated by the temple bells, and she made sure to ring a few, sending our prayers and good wishes out into the world.
Sometimes, the best views come after the hardest climbs.
I couldn't help but feel a sense of peace and tranquility wash over me as we wandered through the temple grounds. It's amazing how a place of worship can evoke such a sense of calm, regardless of one's own beliefs. Klara lit some incense and offered a prayer for our family, while I took a moment to reflect on the journey that had brought us here, to this beautiful place.
After soaking in the spiritual atmosphere of Doi Suthep, we continued our journey to Hmong Doi Pui Village.
Experience the vibrant culture and breathtaking views of Hmong Doi Pui Village, a cultural gem in Chiang Mai's lush mountains.
This village offered a fascinating glimpse into the culture and traditions of the Hmong people, one of the many ethnic minority groups in Thailand. The village was a colorful tapestry of traditional clothing, handcrafted goods, and vibrant gardens. Naomi was particularly taken with the Hmong children, who were selling handmade bracelets and keychains. We bought a few as souvenirs, happy to support the local community.
We wandered through the village, admiring the intricate embroidery and the colorful textiles. Klara, ever the keen shopper, picked up a beautiful indigo batik scarf, while I haggled for a hand-carved wooden elephant. The Hmong people are incredibly skilled artisans, and it was a privilege to witness their craftsmanship firsthand. It reminded me of the craft markets back in Jamaica, where local artisans showcase their talents and keep their traditions alive.
For lunch, we stopped at Aroy Dee.

After our mountain adventures, we were all famished. We ordered a variety of dishes, including Pad Thai, green curry, and Tom Yum soup. The flavors were bold and vibrant, a true explosion of Thai culinary artistry. Naomi, surprisingly, enjoyed the green curry, even though it was a bit spicy. I guess her taste buds are becoming more adventurous!
In the late afternoon, after a brief respite back at the Moon Dragon Hotel.

I decided to venture out on my own for a bit. Klara and Naomi were content to relax by the pool, but I had a craving for some live music. I had heard about a place called Roots Rock Reggae Chaingmai.

The bar was tucked away in a lively corner of the city, pulsating with the infectious rhythms of reggae music. As soon as I stepped inside, I felt right at home. The walls were adorned with Bob Marley posters and Rasta colors, and the air was thick with the scent of ganja. It wasn't quite like 'Yaad Vibes' back in Berlin, but it had a similar vibe.
The band was playing a mix of classic reggae tunes and original compositions, and the crowd was a mix of locals and tourists, all swaying to the music. I ordered a local beer and settled in, letting the music wash over me. It was a welcome reminder of home, a taste of Jamaica in the heart of Thailand.
I struck up a conversation with a local who was sitting next to me. He told me that reggae music is incredibly popular in Thailand, especially among the younger generation. He said that the message of peace, love, and unity resonates deeply with the Thai people. It was heartening to hear that the music of my culture had found such a receptive audience so far away from home.
For dinner, we decided to try Chez Marco Restaurant and Bar.

The atmosphere was inviting, and the menu featured a mix of European and Thai dishes. I opted for the steak, while Klara went for the seafood pasta. Naomi, predictably, ordered pizza. The food was delicious, and the service was excellent. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploring Chiang Mai.
As I reflect on today's adventures, I'm struck by the incredible diversity of Chiang Mai. From the spiritual heights of Doi Suthep to the cultural richness of Hmong Village to the vibrant reggae scene, this city offers something for everyone. And tomorrow promises even more exploration, with plans to visit Royal Park Rajapruek and Bhubing Palace. I'm particularly excited to see the beautiful gardens at Royal Park Rajapruek, while Naomi is looking forward to exploring Bhubing Palace, the winter residence of the Thai royal family. Klara, of course, is keen to discover more local crafts and souvenirs. It's going to be another day of family adventures in this enchanting city. I just hope I don't forget the mosquito repellent this time!
