Day 8: Unearthing History and Savouring Flavours in Chiang Mai
Exploring the ancient city of Wiang Kum Kam, serene temples, and Chiang Mai's vibrant culinary scene with family. A day of discovery!
A Day of Ancient Wonders and Modern Tastes
Today was a day of diving deep into Chiang Mai's history and indulging in its delightful culinary scene. With the family in tow, we set out to explore ancient ruins, serene temples, and the vibrant flavours that this city has to offer. It was a day filled with discovery and deliciousness, a true reflection of Chiang Mai's charm.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Goodsouls Kitchen - Vegan Restaurant. Klara, always the early bird, had researched this place and insisted we try it. And boy, was she right! This vegan restaurant is a gem. Even Naomi, who usually turns her nose up at anything too 'healthy,' devoured her sesame pancakes. I opted for the tofu scramble, which was packed with flavour and gave me the perfect energy boost for the day ahead. It's always a win when you find a place that caters to everyone's tastes, especially when travelling with family. The staff were incredibly friendly and accommodating, making us feel right at home. Plus, the portions were huge, so we were all set for our morning adventure.

With our bellies full, we hopped into a tuk-tuk and headed to Wiang Kum Kam, the ancient underground city. It's amazing to think that this was once the capital of the Lanna Kingdom before King Mengrai moved it to Chiang Mai. The history here is palpable, and wandering through the ruins, you can almost hear the echoes of the past. Naomi was fascinated by the crumbling walls and the stories our guide shared about the city's rise and fall. I couldn't help but imagine what life was like here centuries ago, before the floods and abandonment. It’s a humbling experience, standing in a place that once thrived and now stands as a testament to the passage of time.

Travel is about more than just seeing new places; it's about connecting with the past and understanding the stories that have shaped the world we live in.
After exploring Wiang Kum Kam, we sought a moment of peace at Wat Phantao. This temple, nestled in the heart of the old city, is a true masterpiece of Lanna architecture. The teak wood viharn is stunning, and the intricate carvings tell stories of their own. Naomi was particularly captivated by the gilded carving of a peacock over a crouching dog above the main entrance. I learned that the dog represents the Zodiac figure of the Chiang Mai King who originally used the building as a Palace. It's these little details that make each temple unique and special. The serene atmosphere of Wat Phantao was a welcome contrast to the bustling city outside, a perfect spot for a moment of reflection.

Lunch beckoned, and we found ourselves at Mr. KAI Restaurant, a local favourite known for its authentic Thai dishes. I decided to be adventurous and ordered the khao soi with shrimp, while Klara went for the stir-fried kale with beef. Naomi, predictably, chose the pineapple juice. Every bite was bursting with flavour, and the spices were just right. Mr. Kai himself was incredibly welcoming, chatting with us about the restaurant and his passion for Thai cuisine. It's these personal interactions that make travelling so rewarding, connecting with people who are proud of their culture and eager to share it with others. The prices were also incredibly reasonable, making it a perfect spot for a family meal.

After lunch, Klara suggested we do some shopping. Knowing her, this meant a visit to Sawasdee Craft -handmade costume-. This shop was a treasure trove of unique, handmade clothing and accessories. Naomi was thrilled to find a beautiful, colourful dress, while Klara picked out a stunning silk scarf. I even found a cool, hand-painted shirt that I couldn't resist. Supporting local artisans is important to us, and it's always great to find something special that you know was made with care and attention to detail.

As the day drew to a close, we treated ourselves to dinner at Jen Moy Local Thai Restaurant. This place came highly recommended, and it didn't disappoint. The grilled beef with tamarind sauce was out of this world, perfectly cooked and full of flavour. Klara raved about the somtum with green mango, while Naomi enjoyed the sticky rice. The service was excellent, and the staff were incredibly friendly, making us feel like regulars even though it was our first visit. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploration and indulgence.

Tomorrow is our last day in Chiang Mai, and we plan to make the most of it. We're heading to Mae Kampong Waterfall for a final dose of natural beauty. Klara has already scouted out Cafe de Thaan Aoan for breakfast, and I'm sure it will be another culinary delight. We might even try to squeeze in a visit to Zoe in Yellow for a nightcap before we head back to Berlin. It's been an incredible trip, filled with unforgettable memories, and I'm already looking forward to our next adventure.
Reflecting on today, I'm reminded of the importance of embracing new experiences and connecting with different cultures. Whether it's exploring ancient ruins, savouring local cuisine, or simply chatting with friendly locals, travel has a way of opening your mind and broadening your perspective. And, of course, sharing these experiences with family makes them all the more special. As we prepare to leave Chiang Mai, I'm grateful for the memories we've created and the lessons we've learned. Until next time, Sawasdee!
It's moments like these that remind me why I love to travel. The world is full of incredible places and people, and I feel so fortunate to be able to experience them with my family.
