A Day of Imperial Grandeur

Today was a day of stepping back in time, immersing myself in the grandeur of Meknes and its surroundings. The Moroccan sun, warm and inviting, made exploring the historical sites even more delightful. I was eager to delve into the rich history of this region with my friends, and we set out with a sense of excitement and anticipation.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at La Baraka. This restaurant offered a taste of authentic Moroccan cuisine, setting the perfect tone for a day of exploration. I savored the flavors of the tagine, a traditional dish that was both comforting and energizing. The warm hospitality of the staff made us feel right at home, and we left ready to embrace the day's adventures.

History is not a burden on the memory but an illumination of the soul.

Our first stop was Le portail de Moulay Ismaïl. This gate is a stunning example of Moroccan architecture, showcasing intricate tile work and elegant arches. As we approached, the sheer size and detail of the portal were awe-inspiring. It felt like stepping into another era, imagining the sultans and dignitaries who once passed through this grand entrance. The craftsmanship was remarkable, a testament to the skilled artisans of the 17th century. We spent some time capturing photos and soaking in the historical ambiance. Exploring the area around the gate, we observed the daily life of the residents, sampled traditional Moroccan cuisine at nearby cafes, and browsed artisanal goods in the bustling markets.

Next, we ventured to Heri es-Souani. This massive structure served as a granary and storehouse during the reign of Moulay Ismail. The sheer scale of the building was incredible, with thick walls and vaulted ceilings designed to keep the stored grain cool. As we wandered through the vast halls, I imagined the bustling activity that once filled this space, providing sustenance for the sultan's army and the local population. The engineering and architectural design were truly impressive, reflecting the ingenuity of the 17th-century builders.

After exploring Heri es-Souani, we were ready for lunch. We decided to dine at SCORPION HOUSE, a place I had read about before arriving in Morocco. Perched on a hillside, the views from the restaurant were spectacular, overlooking the town and surrounding hills. The personalized menu offered a variety of options, and we savored each dish while enjoying the panoramic scenery. It was a delightful experience, combining culinary excellence with breathtaking vistas.

As the day drew to a close, we looked for a place to relax and reflect on our adventures. We found ourselves at LA TERRASSE, a charming bar that offered stunning views of Moulay Idriss. Sipping on refreshing drinks, we watched the sunset paint the sky with vibrant colors. The atmosphere was perfect for unwinding, and we shared stories and laughter as the day faded into night.

Reflecting on the day, I was struck by the rich history and cultural heritage of Meknes. The city's landmarks, from Le portail de Moulay Ismaïl to Heri es-Souani, offered a glimpse into Morocco's imperial past. The warmth and hospitality of the locals made the experience even more memorable. It was a day of discovery, connection, and appreciation for the beauty and history of this remarkable region.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore Zerhoun and Small Terasse, hoping to capture more of the region's beauty and history. I am particularly looking forward to visiting قيصرية مولاي ادريس, a shop that promises unique finds and cultural experiences. I'm sure it will be another day filled with unforgettable moments and enriching discoveries.

The weather in October has been kind to us, with pleasantly warm temperatures during the day and cool evenings. It's the perfect time to explore the Moulay Idriss Region, and I am grateful for the opportunity to experience its wonders with my friends.

As I settle into the guesthouse, travel journal in hand, I am filled with a sense of gratitude for the experiences of the day. Morocco continues to surprise and delight me, and I am eager to see what tomorrow brings. The memories created today will undoubtedly stay with me long after I leave this magical place. I'm also glad I remembered to pack my camera, as the scenery has been incredible. I'm only a little upset I forgot my sunglasses back home in Stratford, Ontario. I made sure to call Elena and the kids before heading to bed, and they are very interested in my trip. Miguel even asked if I took any pictures of the local basketball courts!

Until tomorrow,
