A Family Pilgrimage through Kumano Kodo: Exploring Japan's Sacred Trails
Day 2: Spiritual Heights: Finding Serenity at Kumano Nachi Taisha
Discover the awe-inspiring beauty of Kumano Kodo as we explore ancient shrines, majestic waterfalls, and find peace on a family pilgrimage.
Reaching for the Heavens in Kumano
Today was a day of spiritual awakening and breathtaking views as we continued our journey along the Kumano Kodo. The air was crisp, carrying the scent of cedar and a sense of ancient tranquility. I was eager to immerse myself in the cultural and natural wonders that awaited us, and I knew the family was just as excited.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Sansaro Cafe. The cozy atmosphere and the promise of strong coffee were the perfect start to a day of exploration. Elena enjoyed a vegan option, while Miguel opted for something more traditional. I savored the moment, appreciating the quiet before the day's adventures truly began. It reminded me of the small cafes back in Laoag, where simple meals brought people together.
Fueled and ready, we set off towards Kumano-Nachi Taisha, one of the three grand shrines of Kumano.

The bus ride was scenic, winding through lush landscapes that seemed to whisper stories of centuries past. As we approached the shrine, the anticipation grew. The path leading up to Kumano-Nachi Taisha was lined with towering trees, their roots gripping the earth like ancient guardians. It was a climb, but the thought of reaching such a sacred site spurred us onward.
Reaching Kumano-Nachi Taisha was like stepping into another world. The vibrant vermilion structures stood in stark contrast to the surrounding greenery, creating a mesmerizing scene. We took our time exploring the grounds, admiring the intricate details of the architecture and the serene atmosphere. I lit a candle, offering a silent prayer for the health and happiness of my family. Miguel was particularly fascinated by the Yatagarasu, the three-legged crow, which is a symbol of guidance and divine intervention. I explained to him the significance of the symbol, drawing parallels to the guidance we seek in our own lives.
The journey to spiritual enlightenment is often a winding path, filled with both challenges and moments of profound beauty.
Next on our itinerary was the majestic Nachi Waterfall, Japan's tallest single-tiered waterfall.

As we walked towards the falls, the sound of rushing water grew louder, building our excitement. Finally, we arrived at the viewing platform, and the sight that greeted us was simply awe-inspiring. The water cascaded down with tremendous force, creating a misty spray that kissed our faces. Elena was particularly moved by the sight, commenting on the raw power and beauty of nature. It was a moment of collective wonder, a shared experience that strengthened our bond as a family. I couldn't help but think of the Philippines and the many natural wonders we have back home, each with its own unique charm and spiritual significance.
Adjacent to Kumano-Nachi Taisha stands Seiganto-ji, a Buddhist temple that has coexisted with the shrine for centuries.

This harmonious blend of Shinto and Buddhist traditions is a testament to Japan's unique cultural landscape. We explored the temple grounds, admiring the three-story pagoda that offered a stunning view of Nachi Waterfall. Miguel, ever the curious one, climbed to the top of the pagoda, eager to capture the perfect photo. The view was indeed spectacular, a panoramic vista of cascading water and lush greenery.
After a morning filled with spiritual and natural wonders, our stomachs began to rumble. We decided to have lunch at Hinoki Steak House.

I opted for the Kumano beef hamburger steak, wanting to savor the local flavors. Elena chose the marlin steak lunch set, while Miguel, with his endless appetite, went for the Wagyu steak. The meal was a delightful experience, a perfect blend of flavors and textures that left us feeling satisfied and energized.
With renewed vigor, we ventured to the Nachisan Sightseeing Center, hoping to find some unique souvenirs to commemorate our visit.

The center was bustling with activity, a vibrant mix of locals and tourists. We browsed through the various stalls, admiring the local crafts and delicacies. Elena found a beautiful piece of pottery, while Miguel picked up a miniature replica of Nachi Waterfall. I settled on a set of postcards, eager to share our experiences with friends and family back home.
Our final stop for the day was Akihei for dinner, a restaurant known for its authentic Japanese cuisine.

The atmosphere was warm and inviting, and the staff greeted us with genuine hospitality. We savored a variety of dishes, from fresh sashimi to savory tempura. It was a culinary journey that tantalized our taste buds and left us with a deep appreciation for Japanese gastronomy. The owner's wife was particularly helpful, explaining each dish and offering recommendations. Her fluency in English and Chinese made us feel especially welcome.
As the day drew to a close, I reflected on our experiences. We had walked in the footsteps of pilgrims, witnessed the power of nature, and immersed ourselves in the rich tapestry of Japanese culture. It was a day of spiritual awakening, a day that deepened our connection to each other and to the world around us. I am already looking forward to tomorrow, where we plan to visit Kumano Hayatama Taisha, Kamikura Shrine, and Yoshino Kumano National Park. I'm sure more breathtaking views and spiritual experiences await.
