Whispers of the Sahara

Today was a day of exhilarating contrasts, from the roar of a 4x4 across the dunes to the quiet contemplation of ancient fossils. It’s funny how the desert, seemingly barren, holds so much life, both past and present. As Jan and I continue our adventure, I'm reminded that travel isn't just about seeing new places, but about experiencing them with all your senses.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Cafe Restaurant Touga. I savored the strong coffee and fresh bread, fueling up for the adventures ahead. Jan, ever the early bird, was already chatting with some locals about the best routes through the dunes. It's moments like these, connecting with people over simple things like a shared love for strong coffee, that make traveling so special. We discussed our plans for the day, a mix of adrenaline and exploration, and set off with anticipation tingling in our veins.

First on the agenda was the Merzouga 4x4 experience. I confess, I was a bit apprehensive. I'm more of a gentle rambler than a thrill-seeker, but Jan's enthusiasm is infectious. Our guide, a Berber man named Omar, greeted us with a warm smile and a twinkle in his eye. He assured me that he would take good care of us, and I immediately felt at ease. The 4x4 was a sturdy beast, built to conquer the sands, and as we set off, I couldn't help but feel a surge of excitement.

The ride was nothing short of exhilarating. Omar expertly navigated the towering dunes, sending us soaring up and down with breathtaking views at every crest. The landscape was surreal, a sea of golden sand stretching as far as the eye could see. We stopped at several vantage points to take photos, capturing the vastness and beauty of the Sahara. The wind whipped through my hair, and the sun beat down on my skin, but I felt alive and invigorated.

The desert is a book, and each grain of sand tells a story.

After our thrilling 4x4 adventure, we stopped for lunch at Café Restaurant Les Amis. The tagine was flavorful, and the mint tea was the perfect refreshment after our desert escapade. We shared stories with fellow travelers, swapping tips and recommendations. It's always fascinating to hear about other people's journeys and to discover new perspectives on the world.

In the afternoon, we ventured into the DRISS FOSSILS AND MINERLAS SHOP, a treasure trove of ancient wonders. As a librarian with a keen interest in history, I was captivated by the array of fossils, each one a tangible link to the past. Driss, the shop owner, was a wealth of knowledge, sharing stories about the origins of the fossils and the geological history of the region. I was particularly drawn to a delicate trilobite fossil, its intricate details preserved for millions of years. Jan, ever the pragmatist, was more interested in the minerals, marveling at their vibrant colors and unique formations. We purchased a few small pieces as souvenirs, tangible reminders of our desert adventure.

As the sun began to dip towards the horizon, we made our way to the Bivouac Merzouga Experience. The camp was nestled amidst the dunes, a cluster of traditional Berber tents offering a welcome respite from the harsh desert environment. We were greeted with warm hospitality, offered refreshing mint tea, and shown to our tent. It was surprisingly comfortable, with plush bedding and intricate Berber carpets. As I settled in, I couldn't help but feel a sense of peace and tranquility wash over me.

The evening was magical. We gathered around a crackling campfire, sharing stories and laughter with fellow travelers. The Berber hosts played traditional music, their rhythmic drumming and soulful melodies filling the desert air. We feasted on a delicious tagine, savoring the flavors of Morocco under the starlit sky. As the night deepened, the stars emerged in their full glory, a dazzling display of celestial beauty. I felt a sense of awe and wonder, humbled by the vastness of the universe.

Before drifting off to sleep, Jan and I took a quiet stroll away from the camp. We sat on the crest of a dune, gazing at the stars and listening to the silence of the desert. It was a moment of perfect serenity, a reminder of the simple joys in life. I thought of Aoife back in Warsaw, and how much she would have loved this experience. I made a mental note to bring her here someday, to share the magic of the Sahara with my daughter.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore more of the surrounding area with See Around Morocco and visit Ali & Sara's Desert Palace, adding more layers to our understanding of this captivating region. We'll start the day with breakfast at Cafe Restaurant Zahra, followed by lunch at Kasr Diafa Restaurant & Snack & Cafe, and dinner at Café Restaurant Chez Youssef. I am also looking forward to an evening drink at Kasbah Merzouga Bar.

As I close my eyes tonight, I am filled with gratitude for this incredible day. The Merzouga Region has captured my heart, and I know that the memories I've made here will stay with me forever. The Sahara is more than just a desert; it's a place of wonder, beauty, and endless possibilities.

And as the sands shift, so does my perspective. The vastness of the desert reminds me of the vastness of the world, and the endless possibilities that lie before us. Sometimes, all you need is a little adventure to shake things up and remind you of what truly matters.

Goodnight from the Sahara!
