Kyoto's Timeless Charm: A Day of Discovery

Today was a day filled with the kind of experiences that make travel so rewarding – a deep dive into Kyoto’s cultural heart. From the serene heights of Kiyomizu-dera to the bustling, historic streets of Sannenzaka and Ninenzaka, every moment felt like stepping back in time. And of course, no day in Kyoto would be complete without savoring the local cuisine, which we did with gusto.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Hafuu. The restaurant, with its carefully selected meat dishes, set us up perfectly for a day of walking and exploration. I opted for their specialty, a beautifully prepared beef cutlet sandwich. Eleanor went for a more traditional Japanese breakfast and Kenji, of course, wanted the familiar comfort of scrambled eggs. It's funny how even when surrounded by new and exciting foods, kids often crave something familiar. Fuelled up, we set off towards Kiyomizu-dera.

As we approached Kiyomizu-dera, the vibrant atmosphere was palpable. The temple is perched on a hillside, offering stunning panoramic views of Kyoto. Founded in 778, Kiyomizu-dera is one of Kyoto's most celebrated temples. The main hall, a designated National Treasure, was truly awe-inspiring.

The iconic wooden stage of Kiyomizu-dera was, without a doubt, the highlight. Looking out from the stage, Kyoto unfolded beneath us in a breathtaking panorama. The cherry blossoms were still clinging to the trees, adding a delicate splash of color to the landscape. I tried to capture the scene with my camera, hoping to freeze this perfect moment in time. Kenji was more interested in the pigeons that gathered near the edge, but even he seemed captivated by the view for a few moments.

To see the world in a grain of sand, and to see heaven in a wild flower, hold infinity in the palm of your hand, and eternity in an hour.

We explored the temple grounds, taking in the three-story Koyasu Pagoda, which is believed to grant safe childbirth. Eleanor made a silent wish, perhaps thinking of expanding our little family. We also visited the Otowa Waterfall, where we joined the locals in drinking from the sacred waters, each stream promising health, longevity, or success in studies. I opted for the health stream, hoping to ward off any travel bugs.

Leaving Kiyomizu-dera, we strolled down Sannenzaka and Ninenzaka, two beautifully preserved historic streets that wind their way down the hillside. These streets are lined with traditional wooden buildings housing souvenir shops, tea houses, and restaurants. It felt like stepping into a movie set, with every corner offering a picture-perfect view. We picked up some local crafts and sweets, Kenji insisted on a matcha ice cream, which he promptly smeared all over his face.

Lunch was at Komefuku, a delightful restaurant specializing in tempura. The tempura was light, crispy, and utterly delicious. Eleanor particularly enjoyed the seafood salad, while Kenji devoured the tempura shrimp with gusto. It was a welcome break after all the walking, and a chance to refuel before our next adventure.

In the evening, we had a reservation at Kikunoi Roan, a renowned kaiseki restaurant. The experience was a culinary journey, with each dish a work of art. The presentation was exquisite, and the flavors were subtle yet complex. It was a true celebration of Japanese cuisine. I was impressed by the chef's innovative use of seasonal ingredients, a testament to Kyoto's rich culinary heritage. Eleanor, ever the foodie, was in her element, savoring every bite and trying to decipher the intricate flavors.

After dinner, Eleanor and I decided to sneak away for a nightcap at Kyoto Star Bar. I'd heard great things about their cocktails, and we were not disappointed. The bar had a sophisticated, intimate atmosphere, and the bartender was a true mixologist. I tried a Ki No Bi Negroni, while Eleanor opted for a classic whisky sour. It was the perfect end to a perfect day, a chance to unwind and reflect on all the beauty and wonder we had experienced.

As I write this, back in our hotel room at The Royal Park Hotel Iconic Kyoto, I can't help but feel grateful for this incredible journey. Kyoto has a way of capturing your heart, of transporting you to another time and place. Tomorrow, we plan to visit Nijō Castle and the Kyoto International Manga Museum. I'm particularly excited about the Manga Museum, as I've always been fascinated by Japanese art and culture. But for now, it's time to rest and dream of temples, tea houses, and traditional tastes.

Goodnight from Kyoto.

Looking back on the day, I realized that I managed to navigate the crowds and the unfamiliar streets without my umbrella, one of the items I forgot to pack! It seems the good weather is determined to stick around. Hopefully, my forgetfulness won’t come back to bite me later in the trip.

I'm also glad we managed to experience the Miyako Odori, the spring dances by Geiko and Maiko, which is a highlight of Kyoto in April. Though we didn't attend the performance itself, knowing it was happening nearby added to the city's vibrant atmosphere. Perhaps we'll catch it another time. For now, I'm content with the memories we've made today, and excited for what tomorrow will bring.
