Family Adventure in the Cultural Heart of Kyoto
Day 11: Kyoto's Serene Sanctuaries: Finding Peace Amidst Ancient Beauty
Discover tranquility in Kyoto's Tōfuku-ji and Heian Shrine, blending history, nature, and spiritual reflection in a single day.
A Day of Temples and Tranquility
Today was a day of exploring Kyoto's serene side, a much-needed contrast to the bustling city life I've grown accustomed to in Bristol. Eleanor and Kenji joined me as we ventured into the heart of Kyoto, seeking the peace and beauty that these ancient temples offer. It was a day filled with reflection, appreciation, and a deeper understanding of Japan's rich cultural heritage.
Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Alice On Wednesday. The whimsical Alice in Wonderland theme was a hit with Kenji, who was fascinated by the quirky decor and themed treats. It was a fun and lighthearted way to start our day before diving into the more solemn and spiritual experiences that awaited us.

Exploring Tōfuku-ji Temple
Our first stop was Tōfuku-ji Temple, a place I had read about extensively but was still unprepared for its grandeur. Founded in 1236, Tōfuku-ji is one of Kyoto's major Zen temples, and you can feel the history in every corner. Even though the autumn foliage is what it is most famous for, the fresh greenery of the maples was beautiful.

We wandered through the temple grounds, taking in the Sanmon Gate, the oldest Zen gate in Japan, dating back to 1425. The sheer size of the Hondo (main hall) was impressive, a testament to the architectural prowess of the past. I was particularly drawn to the meditation hall (zendo), belfry (shoro), bath (yokushitsu) and lavatory (tosu). It offered a glimpse into the daily lives of the monks who have lived and practiced here for centuries.
The Hojo Garden was a highlight, a unique rock garden surrounding the head priest's former living quarters on all sides. Each garden had a different character, using pebbles, rocks, moss, and trees to create a serene and contemplative space. Kenji enjoyed the checkerboard pattern in the northern garden, carefully stepping between the stones and moss.
In the heart of Kyoto, temples stand as silent witnesses to centuries of history, inviting contemplation and offering respite from the modern world.
I took a moment to reflect on my own journey, both in life and in this beautiful country. The tranquility of the gardens allowed me to clear my mind and appreciate the present moment. I thought about my life back in Bristol, my work as a software developer, and the simple joys of spending time with Eleanor and Kenji. It was a reminder of what truly matters.
A Visit to Heian Shrine
Next, we made our way to Heian Shrine, a more recent addition to Kyoto's historical landscape, built in 1895 to commemorate the city's 1100th anniversary. The shrine is dedicated to Emperor Kanmu, the first emperor of the Heian period, and Emperor Komei, the last emperor to rule from Kyoto.

The vibrant colors of Heian Shrine were a stark contrast to the more subdued tones of Tōfuku-ji. The large torii gate at the entrance immediately caught our attention, a symbol of the transition from the mundane to the sacred. We strolled through the spacious courtyard, admiring the architecture, which is a scaled-down replica of the original Imperial Palace from the Heian Period.
The gardens of Heian Shrine were particularly stunning. Designated as a National Site of Scenic Beauty, the gardens are divided into four sections, each representing a different period of Japanese history. The cherry trees, though past their peak bloom, still added a touch of elegance to the landscape. Eleanor was especially taken with the weeping cherry trees, imagining how beautiful they must look in full bloom.
Kenji enjoyed running around the open spaces, his laughter echoing through the serene environment. It was heartwarming to see him so carefree and happy, a reminder of the importance of family and creating lasting memories. It's moments like these that make our travels so special.
Shopping at Daimaru Kyoto Store
After our temple visits, we decided to indulge in a bit of shopping at Daimaru Kyoto Store. This department store is a Kyoto institution, offering everything from high-end fashion to local crafts and delicacies. We explored the various floors, browsing through the displays and soaking in the atmosphere.

Eleanor was on the lookout for some traditional Japanese fabrics, while I was interested in finding some unique souvenirs for friends back home. Kenji, of course, was drawn to the toy section, where he spent a considerable amount of time admiring the intricate model trains and robots. We ended up buying him a small wooden toy, a memento of our time in Kyoto.
I was particularly impressed with the food floor, a culinary paradise offering a wide array of Japanese treats. From delicate sweets to savory snacks, the options were endless. We sampled some local delicacies, including matcha-flavored sweets and pickled vegetables. It was a delicious way to experience the flavors of Kyoto.
A Culinary Evening
As evening approached, we prepared for our dinner at Nakamura, a Michelin-starred kaiseki restaurant. The anticipation had been building all day, and we were eager to experience the culinary artistry that Nakamura is known for. The restaurant itself exuded elegance and tradition, with private rooms and impeccable service.

The kaiseki experience was a journey through the seasons, with each dish carefully crafted to showcase the freshest ingredients and flavors. From the delicate sashimi to the flavorful miso soup, every course was a work of art. I was particularly impressed with the chef's attention to detail and the way he balanced flavors and textures.
Eleanor and I savored every bite, appreciating the skill and artistry that went into each dish. Kenji, though not as adventurous in his palate, enjoyed the simpler dishes and was fascinated by the presentation. It was a memorable dining experience, one that we will cherish for years to come.
