A Day of Gentle Giants and Royal Splendor

Today was a day filled with incredible experiences that touched both our hearts and our senses. From spending time with rescued elephants to wandering through stunning royal gardens, Chiang Mai continues to surprise and delight us at every turn. It’s these kinds of days that make travel so rewarding, creating memories that Eleanor, Kenji, and I will cherish for years to come.

Our morning began early, with a hearty breakfast at Eing Restaurant. The traditional Thai dishes were a delicious start to the day, fueling us up for our visit to the Elephant Rescue Park. The aroma of spices and the vibrant flavors were a perfect introduction to the adventures that awaited us.

Meeting the Gentle Giants

The drive to the Elephant Rescue Park was scenic, winding through lush landscapes that offered glimpses of rural Thai life. As we approached the park, anticipation grew – especially for Kenji, who was bursting with excitement to see the elephants. I was a bit nervous about how the experience would be, ensuring it was ethical and respectful to these magnificent creatures.

Thankfully, the Elephant Rescue Park exceeded all expectations. It was clear from the start that the elephants' well-being was the top priority. We learned that the park rescues elephants from circuses, logging industries, and other forms of exploitation, providing them with a safe and nurturing home. This resonated deeply with Eleanor and me, reinforcing our commitment to responsible travel.

Our visit began with an introduction to the elephants, each with its own unique story of rescue and rehabilitation. It was heartwarming to hear how these gentle giants were healing from their past traumas, now living in peace and comfort. Kenji was particularly taken with a playful young elephant who seemed to enjoy splashing water on anyone who came near.

We spent the morning feeding the elephants, offering them large bunches of bananas and watermelons. It was incredible to be so close to these massive animals, feeling their soft trunks as they gently took the food from our hands. I captured several photos, wanting to remember every detail of this unique encounter. Eleanor was moved by the kindness and dedication of the park staff, who clearly had a deep bond with each elephant.

After feeding time, we joined the elephants for a walk through the park. It was a leisurely stroll, allowing us to observe the elephants in their natural habitat. We learned about their behaviors, their social interactions, and the importance of protecting their environment. Kenji, never one to be shy, asked countless questions, eager to absorb every bit of information.

One of the highlights of our visit was bathing the elephants. We waded into a shallow river, armed with buckets and brushes, and helped scrub the elephants clean. They seemed to enjoy the cool water, playfully splashing us in return. Kenji was in fits of laughter as he got soaked from head to toe, declaring it the best part of the day. It was a truly joyful experience, connecting with these animals in such a personal way.

Spending time with these rescued elephants was a powerful reminder of the importance of ethical tourism and the positive impact we can have on animal welfare.

Leaving the Elephant Rescue Park, we felt a sense of gratitude and fulfillment. It was an experience that touched our hearts, reinforcing our commitment to supporting ethical animal tourism. I would highly recommend this park to anyone visiting Chiang Mai, especially families looking for a meaningful and educational activity.

A Royal Afternoon at Rajapruek

After our enriching morning with the elephants, we headed to the Royal Park Rajapruek, a sprawling botanical garden showcasing a diverse collection of plants and flowers from around the world. This park was established to commemorate King Bhumibol Adulyadej's 60th anniversary of accession to the throne and his 80th birthday, and it truly is a sight to behold.

As we entered the park, we were immediately struck by the vibrant colors and meticulously manicured landscapes. The park is divided into various zones, each representing a different country or region, showcasing their unique horticultural heritage. We decided to take the tram to explore the vast grounds, hopping off at various points of interest.

Our first stop was the Royal Pavilion, a stunning example of traditional Thai architecture. Inside, we learned about King Rama IX's contributions to agriculture and his dedication to improving the lives of the Thai people. The pavilion offered panoramic views of the park, and I took the opportunity to capture some breathtaking photos.

Next, we wandered through the international gardens, marveling at the diverse flora from around the globe. The Dutch garden, with its colorful tulips and windmills, was a particular favorite of Kenji's, reminding us of storybooks we read to him back in Bristol. The Chinese garden, with its serene ponds and intricate pagodas, offered a peaceful escape from the afternoon sun.

Eleanor was particularly drawn to the orchid garden, a fragrant oasis filled with hundreds of delicate blooms. She spent a long time admiring the intricate details of each flower, capturing their beauty with her camera. I, on the other hand, was fascinated by the various bonsai trees, marveling at the skill and patience required to cultivate these miniature masterpieces.

As we explored the park, we came across numerous art installations and sculptures, adding a touch of whimsy to the already stunning landscape. Kenji enjoyed running around the open spaces, discovering hidden pathways and secret gardens. We even rented a bicycle for a while, enjoying a leisurely ride through the park's well-maintained bike paths. However, we quickly discovered that bicycles are not equipped with child seats, so we opted for the tram again, ensuring Kenji's safety and comfort.

The Royal Park Rajapruek is not only a beautiful place to visit but also an educational one. We learned about different plant species, horticultural techniques, and the importance of preserving our natural environment. It was a perfect blend of leisure and learning, making it an ideal destination for families.

A Taste of Burma and Local Finds

As the sun began to set, we made our way to The Swan Burmese Cuisine for a late lunch. I had heard wonderful things about this restaurant, and I was eager to try authentic Burmese dishes. The restaurant's cozy atmosphere and friendly staff immediately made us feel welcome. We ordered a variety of dishes, including Mohinga, a traditional fish soup with rice noodles, and Tea Leaf Salad, a unique and flavorful dish with fermented tea leaves, crispy beans, and peanuts. The flavors were rich and complex, offering a delightful culinary experience. Kenji, surprisingly, enjoyed the Mohinga, slurping up the noodles with gusto. Eleanor and I appreciated the fresh ingredients and the authentic spices used in each dish.

After our meal, we decided to explore the Mosaic Market Chiang Mai, hoping to find some unique souvenirs and local crafts. The market was bustling with activity, offering a wide array of handmade goods, clothing, and artwork. We wandered through the stalls, admiring the creativity and skill of the local artisans. Eleanor found a beautiful hand-painted silk scarf, while I purchased a small wooden carving of an elephant as a memento of our time in Chiang Mai. Kenji, of course, was drawn to the toy stalls, eventually settling on a colorful kite to fly in the park tomorrow.

For dinner, we ventured to Redbox Restaurant, known for its modern take on Thai cuisine. The ambiance was elegant, and the service was impeccable. We opted for the tasting menu, eager to sample a variety of dishes. Each course was a work of art, beautifully presented and bursting with flavor. The restaurant proudly uses ingredients sourced from local farmers, ensuring freshness and supporting the community. It was a truly special dining experience, and I can see why Redbox has earned recognition in the Michelin Guide.
