Day 5: Exploring Ancient Cities and Rooftop Views in Chiang Mai
Discover the historical wonders of Wiang Kum Kam, serene temples, and vibrant nightlife in Chiang Mai with family and friends.
A Day of Ancient Echoes and Modern Heights
Today was a fascinating blend of history and contemporary Chiang Mai. We started by stepping back in time, exploring ancient ruins, and ended the day with a modern twist, enjoying the city's vibrant nightlife from a rooftop bar. It's amazing how much this city has to offer, blending the old and the new so seamlessly.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Its Good Kitchen. The name certainly lived up to its promise! I opted for a classic Thai breakfast of Jok (rice porridge) while Eleanor and Kenji enjoyed some fruit and toast. The food was delicious and provided the perfect fuel for a day of exploration. What I appreciated most was their attention to detail, ensuring the food was not only tasty but also beautifully presented.

After breakfast, we headed to Wiang Kum Kam, an ancient city that predates Chiang Mai. It was established by King Mangrai in the late 13th century before he moved the capital to Chiang Mai due to frequent flooding. It’s incredible to think that this city was once a thriving capital, now partially submerged and rediscovered centuries later.

Exploring Wiang Kum Kam felt like stepping into a history book. We wandered through the ruins of ancient temples and monuments, imagining what life must have been like centuries ago. The kids were especially fascinated by Wat Chedi Liam, with its distinctive stepped pyramid-shaped chedi. It's amazing to see how much of the ancient walls and moats still remain. The intricate details on some of the ruins, like Wat Pu Pia, were a testament to the artistry of the Lanna Kingdom.
History is not the past but a map of the past, drawn from a particular point of view.
Our guide shared stories of the city's rise and fall, painting a vivid picture of the kingdom's past. The repeated flooding, which ultimately led to the city's abandonment, was a stark reminder of nature's power. Despite the passage of time and the forces of nature, the remnants of Wiang Kum Kam still stood as a testament to the ingenuity and resilience of its people. It was a humbling experience to walk through the same grounds where kings and commoners once lived, worshipped, and built their lives. Kenji was particularly intrigued by the tales of King Mangrai and his decision to move the capital. He kept asking questions about what the king was like and why he chose Chiang Mai.
Next on our itinerary was Wat Umong Maha Thera Chan, a serene temple nestled in the heart of the old city. This temple, dating back to 1367, offered a peaceful contrast to the bustling city outside. The name 'Umong,' meaning tunnel, refers to the underground chamber beneath one of the chedis, which was used by monks for meditation. It was a truly unique and spiritual experience to explore the temple grounds, surrounded by ancient trees and the quiet hum of Buddhist chants.

The temple's architecture was a blend of Lanna and Rattanakosin styles, with intricate carvings and vibrant murals depicting scenes from the Buddha's life. Eleanor was particularly drawn to the mythical beasts guarding the ordination hall, admiring their detailed craftsmanship. We spent some time meditating in the shade of an ancient Bodhi tree, soaking in the tranquil atmosphere. The kids were surprisingly calm and respectful, perhaps sensing the sacredness of the place. It was a refreshing break from the historical explorations of the morning, allowing us to reconnect with our inner selves and appreciate the beauty of simplicity.
For lunch, we tried Nun's Restaurant, known for its authentic Thai cuisine. I decided to try their famous Khao Soi, a Northern Thai noodle curry soup, while Eleanor went for the Pad Thai. Kenji, always a fan of simpler flavors, opted for egg fried rice. The food was delicious, and the portions were generous. I could see why this place was so popular among locals and tourists alike. The flavors were rich and authentic, and the spices were perfectly balanced. It was a true taste of Thailand, and we all left feeling satisfied and energized for the afternoon's adventures.

As the sun began to set, we decided to experience Chiang Mai's nightlife. We made our way to THC Rooftop Bar, known for its laid-back atmosphere and panoramic city views. The bar's name, derived from Thai Hemp Clothing, hinted at its relaxed, hippy vibe, and the reggae music added to the chill ambiance. Although they don't sell weed, the atmosphere was certainly relaxed and welcoming. We found a cozy spot with floor pillows and ordered some drinks. I went for a local beer, while Eleanor tried one of their signature cocktails. The kids enjoyed some fruit juices, marveling at the colorful umbrellas and decorations.

The view from the rooftop was breathtaking. We could see the entire city spread out before us, with the mountains in the distance. The twinkling lights created a magical atmosphere, and the cool breeze was a welcome relief from the day's heat. It was the perfect way to unwind and reflect on our adventures. We chatted, laughed, and soaked in the vibrant energy of Chiang Mai's nightlife. Kenji even tried his hand at some impromptu dance moves, much to our amusement. The THC Rooftop Bar was a perfect ending to a day that had taken us from ancient ruins to modern heights.
Dinner was at Chez Marco Restaurant and Bar. The food was a delightful fusion of French and Japanese cuisine, reflecting the owner's heritage. I opted for the tuna carpaccio, while Eleanor chose the Thai steak. Kenji, always adventurous, tried the homemade gyoza. Each dish was a work of art, beautifully presented and bursting with flavor. The atmosphere was lively and welcoming, and the staff were attentive and friendly. It was a perfect way to end a day of historical exploration and modern adventure.
