Day 2: Ancient Echoes: Discovering Cusco's Sacred Sites
Explore Cusco's mystical past with a solo journey through Saqsaywaman, Q'enqo, and Tambomachay. Uncover ancient secrets and breathtaking views.
Whispers of the Incas
Today, I ventured into the heart of Incan history, exploring the archaeological wonders surrounding Cusco. It was a day of discovery, reflection, and awe as I walked through sites that once held profound significance for the Inca civilization. The stones seemed to whisper stories of the past, and I felt a deep connection to the ancient people who once walked these very paths.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at Cicciolina. The restaurant was a delightful blend of Mediterranean and Peruvian influences, with warm, inviting decor. I opted for poached eggs with asparagus, along with a strong coffee – the perfect fuel for a day of exploration. I made sure to sit in the formal restaurant area to enjoy the impeccable service I had read about.
Fueled and ready, I set off to Saqsaywaman, the immense fortress overlooking Cusco. Even after researching it, I was unprepared for the sheer scale of the stonework. The massive, precisely fitted stones are a testament to the Incas' engineering prowess. It's hard to fathom how they managed to move and place these enormous blocks without modern machinery. The views of Cusco from Saqsaywaman were breathtaking, stretching across the city and into the surrounding mountains. I spent a long time wandering through the complex, imagining the fortress in its prime, filled with warriors and bustling with activity. I learned that Sacsayhuaman means 'Royal Eagle' in Quechua.

The stones seemed to whisper stories of the past, and I felt a deep connection to the ancient people who once walked these very paths.
From Saqsaywaman, I made my way to Q'enqo Archaeological Complex, a short distance away. Q'enqo, meaning 'labyrinth' in Quechua, is a stark contrast to the open expanse of Saqsaywaman. This site is characterized by its intricate network of subterranean galleries, canals, and a semi-circular amphitheater-type structure carved into a natural rock formation. The Spanish conquistadors gave the site its name. As I explored the site, I could feel the weight of history and mystery surrounding it. It’s believed that Q'enqo was an important ceremonial site where rituals and sacrifices were performed. The zigzagging canal carved into the rock may have transported ceremonial chicha or sacrificial llama blood. The underground tunnels were used to mummify important members of Inca society. The energy of the place was palpable, and I felt a sense of reverence as I walked through the ancient pathways.

Next on my itinerary was Tambomachay, also known as the Baths of the Inca. This site is a marvel of hydraulic engineering, with a series of aqueducts, canals, and waterfalls that demonstrate the Incas' mastery of water management. The precision with which the water flows through the stone channels is remarkable. It was built in the 15th century and is a testament to their understanding of hydraulics. Tambomachay was a place of worship, honoring water, a vital life element. The Inca civilization had immense respect for natural elements. The site is also referred to as “The Baths of the Inca”. I learned that the water flows from two natural springs. It's a peaceful and serene place, and I took some time to simply sit and listen to the sound of the water cascading down the terraces.

After a day of exploring ancient ruins, I was ready for a satisfying lunch. I headed to Limo, a restaurant known for its Peruvian-Japanese fusion cuisine and its stunning views of the Plaza de Armas. I started with a Pisco Sour, a classic Peruvian cocktail, before indulging in a causa, a popular dish from Lima with a base of mashed potato. For the main course, I chose the grilled alpaca with elderberry sauce, which was tender and flavorful. I enjoyed the view of the colorful square, the elegant colonial arcades and the baroque façade of Cusco's vast Jesuit church.

As evening approached, I decided to experience Cusco's nightlife. I made my way to LIMBUS RESTOBAR, located in the San Blas district. The bar offered panoramic views of the city, and I enjoyed a Lumbus (experimental) bitter, a bitter based Pisco drink served in a bowl of ice with a light to make it extra fancy. The atmosphere was lively, and I struck up conversations with other travelers, sharing stories and experiences.

For dinner, I chose Uchu Peruvian Steakhouse. The restaurant had a unique ambiance, with an open kitchen and a focus on traditional Peruvian dishes with a modern twist. I opted for the alpaca loin, served on a sizzling hot volcanic stone with a selection of dipping sauces. The meat was tender and flavorful, and the experience of cooking it on the stone was interactive and enjoyable. The restaurant is decorated with bold turquoise walls, broken up by feature panels of clay and straw adobe; futuristic silver-bauble lights hang from beamed and vaulted ceilings. It was a perfect way to end a day of exploration and discovery.

As I walked back to Wayra Dreams Hotel, I reflected on the day's experiences. Cusco is a city that seamlessly blends its ancient past with its vibrant present. The Incan ruins are not just relics of a bygone era; they are living monuments that continue to inspire and captivate. Tomorrow, I plan to visit the Museo de Arte Precolombino, the Twelve Angled Stone, and the San Blas View Point. I also plan to do some shopping at Centro Textil Acllas Cusco.

I am also mindful of the fact that I forgot to pack sunscreen and an adapter for charging electronics. I will need to purchase these items tomorrow.
The crisp mountain air and the echoes of history made for a truly unforgettable day. I am grateful for the opportunity to explore this incredible city and to connect with its rich cultural heritage. I am eager to see what tomorrow brings, as I delve deeper into the heart of the Incan Empire.
It is interesting to note that today, May 26, is the start of the Celebration Lord of Torrechayoc in Urubamba. However, I was not able to attend this event.
As I prepare for bed, I am reminded of a quote by the Japanese writer, Ryunosuke Satoro:
The individual is ephemeral, races and nations come and pass away, but culture continues.
Good night from Cusco.
