A Day of Exploration in Cusco

Today was a deep dive into the heart of Cusco, a city that continues to surprise me with its blend of Incan history and vibrant modern culture. As a software developer from Bristol, I'm used to logic and structure, but Cusco is teaching me to appreciate the beauty of the unexpected and the value of immersing oneself in a completely different world. Today’s itinerary was packed, and I was eager to explore!

My day began with a hearty breakfast at El Mesón de Don Tomas. I opted for a traditional Peruvian breakfast, which included tamales and some coca tea to help with the altitude. The restaurant had a cozy, welcoming atmosphere, perfect for fueling up before a day of exploring. I overheard some other tourists discussing their plans to visit Machu Picchu, and it reminded me of how grateful I am to be here, experiencing this incredible place firsthand. It's funny, I've visited many places, but something about Cusco really feels special.

From there, I headed to the Museo de Arte Precolombino. The museum is housed in a beautifully restored colonial mansion, Casa Cabrera, which itself is a work of art. I was immediately struck by the elegance of the building, a blend of Inca foundations and Spanish colonial architecture. Inside, the collection of pre-Columbian art was fascinating. The displays were thoughtfully curated, showcasing pieces from various cultures across Peru, including the Nazca, Mochica, and Inca civilizations. I found myself particularly drawn to the intricate ceramics and gold artifacts. As someone with a background in technology, I couldn't help but marvel at the skill and precision of these ancient artisans.

In every artifact, I saw a reflection of human ingenuity and creativity, a reminder that innovation is not unique to our modern age.

After the museum, I made my way to the famous Twelve Angled Stone. This iconic stone is part of a wall that once belonged to the Inca Roca palace and is now part of the Archbishop's Palace. What’s so special about this stone is its perfect fit within the surrounding wall. The Incas were masters of stonework, and this stone is a prime example of their skill. Each of its twelve angles fits seamlessly with the adjacent stones, without the use of mortar. It's truly an incredible feat of engineering. I spent some time admiring the stone, trying to imagine the people who built it and the world they lived in. There were many tourists gathered around, all equally impressed by this ancient marvel.

Next on my list was the San Blas View Point. The walk to San Blas was steep, winding through narrow cobblestone streets lined with artisan shops and cafes. San Blas is known as the artisan neighborhood of Cusco, and it definitely lived up to its reputation. I passed shops selling everything from hand-woven textiles to intricate wood carvings. The climb was worth it, as the viewpoint offered a panoramic view of Cusco. From there, I could see the red-tiled roofs of the city stretching out towards the surrounding mountains. The view was breathtaking, especially with the late afternoon sun casting a golden glow over everything.

Before dinner, I stopped by Centro Textil Acllas Cusco. I wanted to purchase a small souvenir, and also learn more about traditional Peruvian textiles. The shop was filled with colorful blankets, scarves, and clothing, all made from alpaca wool. I watched a demonstration of the weaving process, and I was amazed by the skill and artistry of the weavers. I ended up buying a beautiful alpaca scarf, a perfect reminder of my time in Cusco. It reminded me a little of the traditional weaving I've seen back home in Matsumoto, and it made me feel a little closer to home, even though I was so far away.

For lunch, I had made a reservation at Green Point Vegan Restaurant. As someone who appreciates healthy and sustainable food, I was excited to try their menu, especially after seeing that it was recommended by a local. The restaurant had a relaxed, eco-friendly vibe, with plants and greenery everywhere. I ordered the Cusco Grill Platter, which included a traditional Peruvian stuffed chili pepper, oyster mushroom skewer, grilled potatoes and corn, served with a cusquenian chili sauce, chimichurri, an avocado flower, and creole salad. The food was delicious and beautifully presented. It was a refreshing change from some of the heavier meals I've had in Peru.

Dinner was at Organika Restaurant, known for its use of fresh, local ingredients. The restaurant had a cozy, rustic atmosphere, with wooden tables and soft lighting. I ordered the sweet potato ravioli, which was delicious. The service was excellent, and the staff were friendly and attentive. I also appreciated that the restaurant was committed to sustainability, sourcing its ingredients from local farmers and using eco-friendly practices. It was a perfect end to a day of exploring Cusco.

As I walked back to Wayra Dreams Hotel, I reflected on the day's experiences. Cusco is a city that truly captivates the senses. From the ancient ruins to the vibrant culture, there is something to discover around every corner. I'm already looking forward to tomorrow, when I'll be visiting the Sacred Valley and Ollantaytambo. It's amazing to think that just a few days ago, I was in Bristol, working on software. Now, I'm here, immersed in the history and culture of Peru. It's a reminder that life is full of possibilities, and that sometimes, the best experiences are the ones you never expect.

I made sure to charge my camera and prepare my hiking boots for tomorrow’s adventure. I’m also remembering to apply sunscreen, as I forgot it today. I’m really looking forward to seeing more of the beautiful country. Maybe I'll even pick up an adapter for my electronics at Qori Art Cusco tomorrow, something I've been meaning to do since I arrived. The Cruz Velacuy festival is also coming up on May 3rd, I'm hoping to catch a glimpse of the celebrations while I'm here.
