Day 8: Chasing Waterfalls and Finding Serenity in Akchour
Embark on a breathtaking hike to Akchour's waterfalls near Chefchaouen, Morocco, and discover nature's hidden gems in the Rif Mountains.
Akchour's Aquatic Adventures
Today was all about embracing the raw, untamed beauty just outside Chefchaouen. I ventured into the Rif Mountains to explore Akchour, a place where waterfalls cascade through lush greenery and the air hums with the energy of nature. It was a day of hiking, discovering hidden gems, and connecting with the serene heart of Morocco.

After a delightful breakfast at Restaurant populaire, fueling up with some traditional Moroccan fare, I set off for Akchour. The journey itself was an experience, with winding roads offering panoramic views of the countryside. I decided to take a local bus to get there, which was quite the adventure! The bus was packed with locals, and the ride was bumpy, but it was a great way to see the countryside and experience the local culture firsthand. It reminded me of my younger days back in Cholula, hopping on the local buses to visit my abuela. The hour-long ride flew by as I chatted with a friendly Berber woman who was heading to the market in Akchour. She shared stories about her family and the traditions of the region, making me feel instantly welcome. I love how travel allows for these unexpected connections. I made a mental note to bring Maximilian and Elena here someday; they'd absolutely love it.
Once I arrived, the air was noticeably cooler and fresher. Akchour is a haven for nature lovers, and I could immediately see why. The trails were calling, and I was eager to answer. I decided to hike to the Grande Cascade D'akchour, the larger of the two main waterfalls in the area.
The hike started off easily enough, with a well-marked path that followed the river upstream. The sound of rushing water was constant, a soothing soundtrack to my adventure. The path was surrounded by lush forests, and I couldn't help but stop every few minutes to take photos of the scenery. The sunlight filtering through the trees created a magical atmosphere, and I felt like I was walking through a fairy tale.

As I continued, the trail became a bit more challenging. There were some steep inclines and rocky patches, but nothing too strenuous. I passed several small cafes along the way, each offering refreshments and a place to rest. I stopped at one for a glass of fresh orange juice, savoring the sweet and tangy flavors as I took in the view.
Sometimes, the most rewarding experiences are the ones that require a little effort, a little sweat, and a willingness to step outside your comfort zone.
As I hiked, I couldn't help but reflect on my life back in Bielefeld. While I love my home and my family, I sometimes feel like I'm stuck in a routine. This trip to Morocco has been a reminder that there's a whole world out there waiting to be explored. It's been a chance to reconnect with myself, to rediscover my sense of adventure, and to appreciate the simple things in life.
The final stretch of the hike was the most challenging, with a steep climb that required me to use my hands in some places. But the effort was more than worth it when I finally reached the Grande Cascade. The waterfall was magnificent, a powerful torrent of water cascading down a sheer rock face into a crystal-clear pool below. The mist from the falls created a rainbow in the air, adding to the magical atmosphere. I spent a long time simply sitting by the pool, listening to the roar of the water and feeling the spray on my face. It was a truly awe-inspiring experience.
I even saw some brave souls taking a dip in the pool, but I decided it was a bit too chilly for me. Instead, I found a quiet spot to meditate, focusing on the sound of the water and the feeling of the sun on my skin. It was a perfect moment of peace and serenity, a chance to clear my mind and recharge my batteries.
After soaking in the beauty of the Grande Cascade, I began the hike back down. The descent was much easier, and I made good time, passing by families and other travelers making their way up. I stopped at Chez Foad for a late lunch, savoring a delicious tagine as I reflected on my day. The flavors were rich and complex, a perfect complement to the natural beauty I had experienced. I thought about how much Elena would enjoy this dish; I'll have to try making it for her when I get back home.

As the sun began to set, I made my way back to Chefchaouen, feeling tired but incredibly fulfilled. I stopped by Assaada for a refreshing drink, enjoying the lively atmosphere and the friendly company of the locals. It was the perfect way to end a perfect day.

Before heading back to Hotel Dar Mounir, I took a moment to sit on a bench in the main square, watching the city come alive with the sounds of the evening. The air was filled with music, laughter, and the aroma of street food. I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience this magical place.

I'm also looking forward to trying the local cuisine at Cafétéria Lhawta for breakfast, Restaurant Jbaria for lunch, and Restaurant Morisco for dinner. And, of course, I'll be stopping by Hibart Souvenirs Shop to pick up a few gifts for Maximilian and Elena.
But for now, I'm content to simply soak in the atmosphere of this enchanting city, grateful for the experiences I've had and excited for what tomorrow may bring. It’s moments like these that remind me why I love to travel, why I love to explore, and why I love to share my experiences with all of you.
It was truly a day to remember, a testament to the power of nature and the beauty of Morocco.
