Stepping Back in Time

Today was a day dedicated to delving deeper into the cultural tapestry of this beautiful region. Leaving the familiar comforts of Shirakawa-go, we ventured out to explore the nearby Gokayama and Hida Takayama, each offering a unique perspective on Japan's rich heritage. It was a day of discovery, reflection, and appreciation for the traditions that have shaped this land.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Arai. It's conveniently located near the bus station, which made it perfect for a quick and satisfying meal before our travels. Maximilian opted for the traditional Japanese set, while Elena enjoyed some simple toast. I decided to try their Hida beef set, and it was absolutely delicious. The beef was so tender, and the miso soup was the perfect complement. It was a great way to start the day!

With our stomachs full and spirits high, we set off to our first destination: the Gokayama Folklore Museum. The journey itself was a treat, with the lush green landscapes of the Japanese Alps unfolding before us. I couldn't help but feel grateful for this opportunity to share such experiences with my family.

Nestled in the serene landscape of Nanto, Toyama, the Gokayama Folklore Museum stands as a testament to the rich cultural tapestry of the region. This museum is dedicated to preserving and showcasing the traditional lifestyle and customs of the Gokayama area, which is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site. From the moment you step inside, you are transported back in time, as the museum's displays intricately detail the agricultural practices, crafts, and everyday life of the local people. The exhibits feature an array of artifacts, including traditional clothing, farming tools, and intricately woven textiles, all of which tell the story of a community that has thrived in harmony with nature for centuries. We explored the authentic thatched-roof houses that have been meticulously preserved, offering insights into the architectural styles that define Gokayama.

Elena was particularly fascinated by the displays of old farming tools and the intricate process of gunpowder production, which was once a significant industry in the area. Maximilian, ever the history enthusiast, appreciated the detailed explanations of the region's unique customs and traditions. For me, it was a poignant reminder of the importance of preserving cultural heritage for future generations.

“The more I learn about different cultures, the more I realize how interconnected we all are.”

After immersing ourselves in the history of Gokayama, we hopped on a bus to Hida Takayama, a charming town known for its well-preserved old town and traditional crafts. The atmosphere here was palpably different, with a bustling energy that contrasted with the tranquil setting of Gokayama. I felt a surge of excitement as we stepped off the bus, ready to explore this new facet of Japan.

Our main attraction in Hida Takayama was the Hida Takayama Retro Museum. Nestled in the picturesque town of Takayama, the Hida Takayama Retro Museum offers visitors a unique glimpse into Japan's Showa era, spanning from the mid-1920s to 1989. This charming museum is a treasure trove of vintage toys, classic games, and nostalgic artifacts that evoke a sense of fond remembrance for those who lived during this dynamic period. As you step through its doors, you'll be greeted by an array of exhibits that showcase everything from retro vending machines to childhood toys, providing a delightful experience for visitors of all ages.

It was like stepping into a time capsule, filled with nostalgic items from the Showa era (1926-1989). Elena was immediately drawn to the vintage toys and arcade games, while Maximilian reminisced about the old motorcycles and cameras on display. I found myself captivated by the displays of everyday household items, which offered a glimpse into the lives of ordinary Japanese families during that period. The museum truly lived up to its concept of excitement and playfulness beyond imagination.

What makes the Hida Takayama Retro Museum particularly special is its interactive nature. Guests can not only admire the displays but also engage with many of the exhibits. Children and adults alike can try their hand at various retro games and activities, creating a fun and immersive environment. The museum also features a cozy snack bar, where you can indulge in delicious treats that harken back to simpler times. This blend of nostalgia and hands-on experiences makes it a fantastic destination for families, couples, and anyone interested in Japan's cultural history.

We spent a good couple of hours exploring the museum, laughing at the quirky exhibits and sharing stories from our own childhoods. It was a wonderful way to connect with each other and to gain a deeper appreciation for the cultural shifts that have shaped modern Japan. I even managed to beat Maximilian at a vintage pinball machine, much to Elena's amusement!

As the afternoon wore on, we started to feel peckish. Luckily, Hida Takayama is known for its delicious street food, so we decided to indulge in some local specialties. We stopped by Zensuke for lunch. All menus are cook with the heart of the owner and location is next to the Nagase house, this is a complex store full of souvenir and Hida products. The owner was so kind and welcoming, making us feel right at home. I ordered some Hida beef skewers, which were incredibly tender and flavorful. Maximilian opted for the local ramen, while Elena enjoyed some takoyaki (octopus balls). It was the perfect way to refuel after a long day of exploring.

With our bellies full and our hearts content, we decided to treat ourselves to a relaxing evening. We made our way to Koshiyama. The bar was cozy and inviting, with a warm atmosphere that made us feel right at home. Maximilian and I enjoyed some local sake, while Elena sipped on a refreshing juice. It was the perfect way to unwind and reflect on the day's adventures.

As we sipped our drinks, we chatted about our favorite moments from the day. Elena loved the retro museum, while Maximilian was fascinated by the history of Gokayama. For me, it was the simple joy of spending quality time with my family and experiencing the beauty of Japan together. It was a day that I will cherish for years to come.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore the Jinya-mae Morning Markets and Takayama Jinya, continuing our journey through this captivating region. I'm particularly excited to visit the morning markets, as I love browsing local crafts and trying new foods. Maximilian is eager to see Takayama Jinya, which served as the local government office during the Edo period. And of course, Elena is looking forward to more adventures and discoveries.

Before heading back to our guesthouse in Shirakawa-go, we made a reservation for dinner at Gassho. I have read that Gassho is one of the oldest gassho-style building in Shirakawa-go village, and was built in the late Edo period (1800-1850). The local cuisine is served in a space with an open hearth with an inseparable Japanese atmosphere (Irori), with each person being served with a Takasokuzen (high leg table). The cuisine is mainly A5-ranked Hida beef grilled with Hoba miso, using homemade Hoba miso, and other local dishes. The rice is Koshihikari, home-grown with reduced pesticides.

As I reflect on today's experiences, I am struck by the profound sense of connection I feel to this land and its people. From the ancient traditions of Gokayama to the nostalgic charm of Hida Takayama, every moment has been a reminder of the beauty and complexity of Japanese culture. And as I look forward to tomorrow's adventures, I am filled with a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to share these experiences with my family.

Back at our guesthouse, I took some time to journal and reflect on the day. It’s amazing how much you can learn and experience in just one day of travel! I am also making a mental note to buy a Japanese phrasebook, because I realized today that I need to improve my Japanese language skills.
