Day 11: A Farewell to Takayama: Markets, History, and Culinary Delights
Explore Takayama's vibrant markets, delve into its rich history at Takayama Jinya, and savor exquisite local cuisine on our final day.
Adieu, Takayama!
As our journey through Japan nears its end, I find myself reflecting on the incredible experiences we’ve had. Today, our last day in Takayama, was a beautiful blend of cultural immersion, historical exploration, and, of course, delightful culinary adventures. It’s amazing how quickly time flies when you’re surrounded by so much beauty and charm.
The day began early, as it should when there's a morning market to explore. Maximilian, Elena, and I set out for the Jinya-mae Morning Market, eager to soak in the local atmosphere. The market was bustling with vendors selling everything from fresh produce and flowers to local crafts and souvenirs. The air was filled with the sounds of friendly chatter and the enticing aromas of street food. It was such a vibrant scene!

I was particularly drawn to the stalls selling local produce. The colors were incredible – bright red tomatoes, deep green vegetables, and vibrant purple eggplants. It reminded me so much of the markets back home in Cholula, Mexico, where the freshness and variety of ingredients are always a feast for the senses. I picked up some fresh fruits for Elena, who was happily munching away as we strolled through the market. Maximilian, ever the pragmatist, was fascinated by the local crafts, examining each item with a keen eye. He ended up buying a beautiful handcrafted wooden box, a perfect memento of our time in Takayama.

After the market, we headed to Takayama Jinya, a former government outpost during the Edo period. This historical site offered a fascinating glimpse into Japan's past. As we walked through the well-preserved buildings, I couldn't help but imagine what life was like here centuries ago. The intricate architecture, the serene gardens, and the carefully displayed artifacts all spoke volumes about the rich history of this region. Elena, surprisingly, was quite engaged, asking lots of questions about the samurai and the government officials who once occupied these halls. It was a great opportunity to teach her a bit about Japanese history and culture.

Maximilian, with his background in engineering, was particularly impressed by the structural design of the buildings. He spent a good amount of time examining the wooden beams and the ingenious methods used to construct the complex. I, on the other hand, was captivated by the stories of the people who lived and worked here. It’s amazing how these historical sites can transport you to another time and place.
For breakfast, we enjoyed a meal at Keyaki, a charming restaurant known for its authentic Japanese cuisine. I opted for a traditional Japanese breakfast set, which included grilled fish, miso soup, rice, and various side dishes. It was a delightful way to start the day, and the flavors were so fresh and vibrant. Maximilian tried the Hida beef miso set meal, which he declared was absolutely delicious. Elena, always a bit more adventurous when it comes to food, enjoyed the tamagoyaki (Japanese omelette) and the onigiri (rice balls).

Lunch was at Morizen, where we indulged in some local specialties. I had the Hida soba noodles, which were incredibly flavorful and satisfying. Maximilian tried the curry udon, which he said was the perfect comfort food. Elena, of course, opted for the tempura, which she happily devoured. The restaurant had a cozy, welcoming atmosphere, and the staff were incredibly friendly and helpful. It was a perfect spot to relax and refuel after a morning of exploring.

In the afternoon, we did some shopping at Ebisu-ya, a local shop known for its unique crafts and souvenirs. I found a beautiful silk scarf, which will be a perfect reminder of our time in Takayama. Maximilian bought a traditional Japanese tea set, which he plans to use back home in Bielefeld. Elena picked out a cute little Sarubobo doll, a local amulet that is said to bring happiness and protection. The shop was filled with all sorts of interesting items, and we had a great time browsing and chatting with the friendly shopkeepers.

As the day drew to a close, we had our farewell dinner at Hidaji, a restaurant known for its exquisite Hida beef dishes. This was a truly special dining experience. The Hida beef was cooked to perfection, melting in our mouths with each bite. The presentation of the dishes was also impeccable, each plate a work of art. The restaurant had a serene, elegant atmosphere, and the service was outstanding. It was the perfect way to end our time in Takayama.

Hidaji is an adults-only establishment, so Maximilian and I enjoyed a rare date night! We savored the quiet atmosphere and the exquisite food, reflecting on our journey and the beautiful memories we’ve created. We both agreed that this trip has been an enriching experience, filled with cultural immersion, historical exploration, and, of course, unforgettable culinary adventures.
Before dinner, I was able to sneak away to enjoy the Hida Takayama NOMBE Festival Sake Brewery Hopping event. Hida Takayama is known for its high-quality local sake, thanks to its favorable climate, water, and rice. The festival was a stamp rally where visitors can visit sake breweries while tasting sake. I bought a Hida Takayama Goshuin Cho (sake drinking book) and completed 6 sake breweries! It was a really fun activity that allowed me to experience the historical atmosphere of the breweries and feel the passion of the people who work there. I even won a Hida Takayama specialties by shopping at the breweries.
As I write this, I’m filled with a mix of emotions. I’m sad to be leaving Takayama, a place that has captured my heart with its beauty and charm. But I’m also excited about the next chapter of our journey. Tomorrow, we will begin our journey back to Germany. Our flight leaves from Tokyo, so we will be travelling by train.
This trip has been more than just a vacation; it’s been a journey of discovery, a chance to connect with a different culture, and an opportunity to create lasting memories with my family. I’m so grateful for the experiences we’ve had and the people we’ve met along the way.
I’m already looking forward to our next adventure, wherever that may be. Until then, sayōnara from Takayama!
The memories from this trip, especially the moments spent exploring the local markets and savoring the delicious cuisine, will stay with me forever.
