Exploring Takayama's Treasures
Today was a delightful immersion into the heart of Takayama, a city that effortlessly blends history, art, and culinary delights. Maximilian, Elena and I were excited to explore beyond Shirakawa-go and experience more of what this region has to offer. It was a day filled with unexpected discoveries and cherished family moments, making it a standout experience on our Japanese adventure.
Our morning began with a hearty breakfast at Shiawaseya Kichibei. The traditional Japanese breakfast set was exactly what we needed to fuel our day, the miso soup warm and comforting, the grilled fish perfectly seasoned, and the rice fluffy and delicious. Elena, surprisingly, enjoyed the natto (fermented soybeans), a testament to her growing adventurous palate! I must admit, I still find it a bit challenging, but I appreciate its nutritional value and cultural significance. As someone who grew up on the vibrant flavors of Cholula, Mexico, I’m always intrigued by the unique tastes of different cultures.

With our bellies full and spirits high, we headed to the Hida no Sato Open Air Museum. The sun was shining, casting a golden glow on the traditional gassho-style farmhouses that dotted the landscape. It felt like stepping back in time as we wandered through the meticulously preserved village. Each house told a story of a bygone era, showcasing the ingenuity and resilience of the people who once lived here. Elena was particularly fascinated by the water wheel and the koi pond, where she gleefully tossed in fish food. Maximilian, ever the history enthusiast, was engrossed in the explanations of the architectural techniques used to construct the houses. The museum offered a tangible connection to Japan's rural past, something I deeply value as someone interested in cultural anthropology.

The beauty of a place lies not just in its scenery, but in the stories it holds.
After immersing ourselves in history, we decided to indulge in some art at the Hida Takayama Museum of Art. This museum was a delightful surprise, featuring an exquisite collection of Art Nouveau and Art Deco glassware, furniture, and objects. Designed by the renowned architect Tadao Ando, the building itself was a work of art, with its clean lines and minimalist aesthetic. I was particularly captivated by the Lalique glass fountain, a stunning piece that once adorned the Champs-Élysées in Paris. Maximilian, who appreciates fine craftsmanship, was impressed by the intricate details of the Charles Rennie Mackintosh furniture. Even Elena, despite her young age, seemed to enjoy the vibrant colors and delicate designs of the glassware. The museum provided a refreshing contrast to the rustic charm of Hida no Sato, showcasing a different facet of artistic expression.

For lunch, we ventured to Zensuke, a local restaurant known for its delicious and healthy Japanese cuisine. The reviews I had read online praised its fresh fish and affordable prices, and it certainly lived up to the hype. I ordered the salmon on top, while Maximilian opted for the California rice bowl, and Elena enjoyed the tempura udon. The restaurant was beautifully arranged, creating a comfortable and inviting atmosphere. It was a perfect spot to relax and recharge after a morning of exploration. I always appreciate finding restaurants that offer both delicious food and a pleasant ambiance, as it enhances the overall dining experience.

As the afternoon sun began to wane, we decided to explore more of Takayama's culinary scene. We strolled through the charming streets, lined with traditional shops and restaurants, each offering a tempting array of local delicacies. We stopped at a few shops, sampling Hida beef skewers and mitarashi dango (soy-glazed rice dumplings), both of which were absolutely divine. The Hida beef, in particular, was incredibly tender and flavorful, a true testament to the region's culinary expertise. I made a mental note to try and recreate these dishes back in Bielefeld, Germany, bringing a taste of Takayama to our home.
For dinner, we chose Tanaka-ya, a restaurant known for its soba noodles. It was the perfect way to end our culinary journey through Takayama. The soba noodles were freshly made, with a delicate texture and nutty flavor that I found incredibly satisfying. Maximilian enjoyed the warm noodle soup, while Elena slurped down her noodles with gusto. The restaurant had a tranquil setting, adding to the overall dining experience. I felt grateful for the opportunity to share these moments with my family, creating memories that we would cherish for years to come.

Our day concluded with a visit to Shiraogi, a cozy bar where we enjoyed some local sake. While Maximilian sampled a few different varieties, I opted for a glass of umeshu (plum wine), its sweet and tangy flavor a perfect complement to the evening air. Elena, of course, had a juice box, feeling very grown-up as she sat between us, soaking in the atmosphere. The bar had a warm and inviting ambiance, making it a perfect spot to unwind and reflect on the day's adventures. It was a fitting end to a day filled with art, history, and culinary delights.

As we head back to our guesthouse, I couldn't help but feel a sense of gratitude for the experiences we had today. Takayama had exceeded my expectations, offering a glimpse into Japan's rich cultural heritage and culinary traditions. I am already looking forward to tomorrow, where we plan to visit the Hida Earth Wisdom Center and the Fukui Prefectural Dinosaur Museum. Elena is especially excited about the dinosaur museum, and I am eager to see her eyes light up with wonder. Good night from Takayama!
