Whispers of the Past & Tastes of Tradition
Today was a delightful blend of prehistoric wonders, cultural immersion, and gastronomic adventures. From the roaring dinosaurs of Fukui Prefectural Dinosaur Museum to the serene wisdom of Hida Earth Wisdom Center and the comforting flavors of Shirakawa-go, it was a day that truly fed both the mind and the soul. Elena was particularly excited, and her enthusiasm was contagious.
Our day began with an early start as we headed towards the Fukui Prefectural Dinosaur Museum. Maximilian had booked our train tickets in advance, a move I deeply appreciated, knowing how much Elena was looking forward to seeing the dinosaurs. The journey itself was beautiful, the Japanese countryside unfolding outside our windows like a living painting. Lush green rice paddies, quaint villages, and rolling hills created a mesmerizing backdrop as we made our way to Katsuyama City.
Arriving at the museum, we were immediately greeted by the impressive silver dome that houses the exhibits. Elena’s eyes widened as she took in the sheer scale of the building, a promise of the prehistoric marvels that awaited us inside. The Fukui Prefectural Dinosaur Museum is renowned as one of the best in Japan, and it certainly lived up to its reputation. The Dinosaur World zone was the highlight, featuring over 40 full-body dinosaur skeletons, some with original fossils. Elena was captivated by the animatronic Tyrannosaurus Rex at the entrance, its lifelike movements and roars sending shivers of excitement down her spine.
We spent hours exploring the various exhibits, from the Earth Sciences zone, which told the story of our planet's geological history, to the History of Life zone, which delved into the origins of life and humankind. Elena peppered us with questions, her curiosity seemingly insatiable. It was wonderful to see her so engaged, learning about these ancient creatures and the world they inhabited. Maximilian, ever the patient father, answered each question with enthusiasm, sharing interesting facts and stories that kept us all entertained.
The best journeys answer questions you never thought to ask.
After our prehistoric adventure, we made our way back towards Shirakawa-go, eager to explore the Hida Earth Wisdom Center. This cultural hub, located in Takayama, Gifu Prefecture, is dedicated to showcasing the traditional crafts and sustainable practices of the Hida region. It was a stark contrast to the dinosaur museum, yet equally fascinating.
Upon arrival, we were greeted by the center's tranquil atmosphere. The exhibits highlighted the unique connection between the local people and their natural environment. We learned about woodworking, pottery, and textile arts, all passed down through generations. Elena even had the opportunity to try her hand at a simple woodworking project, guided by a patient instructor. It was a wonderful experience, connecting her to the traditions of this region in a tangible way.
The Hida Earth Wisdom Center also emphasized the philosophies that have sustained the Hida region for centuries. It was inspiring to see how the local community has embraced sustainable practices, living in harmony with nature while preserving their cultural heritage. As someone deeply interested in sustainable tourism, I found this aspect of the center particularly compelling. It reinforced my belief that travel should be about more than just seeing new places; it should also be about learning from and respecting the cultures and environments we encounter.
By late afternoon, we were back in Shirakawa-go, ready to indulge in the local cuisine. For breakfast, we started our day at Arai, a cozy restaurant near the bus station. The older lady managing the place was incredibly kind, and we enjoyed a simple yet delicious breakfast set. Maximilian raved about the Hida beef, declaring it juicy and addictive. Elena loved the tofu and other side dishes, which complemented the beef perfectly. It was a comforting start to our day, setting the tone for the adventures that lay ahead.
Lunch was an experience in itself. We ventured to Masuzono Bunsuke, a small family restaurant located a short walk from the main town. The serene and quiet atmosphere was a welcome respite from the bustling crowds. The chef takes pride in serving fresh fish dishes, personally catching the fish from the pond immediately after receiving orders. We savored river fish such as Iwana and Nijimasu, with sashimi made from Nijimasu that tasted unlike anything I've ever had. Maximilian was particularly impressed with the freshness of the fish, while Elena enjoyed watching the chef catch our lunch right before our eyes. It was a truly unique and memorable dining experience.
For dinner, we decided to try Yukinko, a tourist shop known for its delicious Gohei mochi. This rice cake is skewered and grilled, offering a unique and satisfying flavor. Elena also insisted on trying the Hida vanilla ice cream, which was rich and creamy. The menu changes with the seasons, and we enjoyed our food on the outdoor benches, soaking in the atmosphere of Shirakawa-go as the sun began to set. It was a perfect ending to a day filled with exploration and discovery.
Before dinner, I managed to squeeze in some time for shopping at Ichihi. I was on the hunt for some unique souvenirs, and this charming store didn't disappoint. I found some beautiful local crafts and delicacies that perfectly captured the essence of Japan's rich heritage. I picked up a few small gifts for family and friends back in Germany, as well as a special memento for myself to remember this incredible trip.
As I reflect on today's adventures, I am filled with a sense of gratitude. We experienced so much in a single day, from the ancient wonders of the dinosaur museum to the cultural insights of the Hida Earth Wisdom Center and the delicious flavors of Shirakawa-go. It was a day that brought us closer as a family, creating memories that we will cherish for years to come.
Tomorrow, we are planning to explore the Nature Forest and Garyu Park. I am excited to see what new adventures await us as we continue our journey through this beautiful country. I am also looking forward to trying some new restaurants, like Keyaki, Morizen and Hidaji and maybe visit Gassho bar.
It's moments like these that remind me why I love to travel. It's not just about seeing new places, but about immersing ourselves in different cultures, learning from the past, and connecting with the present. It's about creating memories with the people we love and expanding our understanding of the world around us. And as I drift off to sleep tonight, I am filled with anticipation for the adventures that tomorrow will bring.
I am so glad that I brought my camera and comfortable walking shoes. I did forget my umbrella and Japanese phrasebook, though. I will have to remember to buy these items soon.
