Family Adventure on Shikoku Island: Exploring Japan's Hidden Gem
Day 5: Nature's Majesty: A Day of Waterfalls and Karst Landscapes on Shikoku Island
Discover the breathtaking beauty of Shikoku Island with Sofia and her family as they explore stunning waterfalls and unique karst landscapes.
Chasing Waterfalls and Karst Wonders
Today was all about embracing the raw, untamed beauty of Shikoku. I woke up with a sense of anticipation, knowing we were venturing into the heart of the island's natural wonders. It's days like these that remind me why I started this blog – to share the magic of discovering hidden gems with my family and all of you.
Our day started with a hearty breakfast at Osusowake Shokudo Mado. This charming spot is known for its community focus and delicious, home-style cooking. It felt like stepping into someone's cozy kitchen, and the food was prepared with so much care. I learned that 'Osusowake' means 'sharing something with warmth,' which perfectly captures the spirit of this place. They focus on reducing food waste and even offer discounted meals for children. It's wonderful to see a business that cares so much about its community. Maximilian enjoyed a traditional Japanese breakfast set, while Elena devoured a bowl of rice with miso soup. I opted for the daily special, which was both comforting and delicious.

Fueled up and ready for adventure, we set off towards the Shikoku Karst. The drive itself was a treat, with winding roads offering glimpses of lush valleys and distant mountains. As we climbed higher, the landscape transformed dramatically. The rolling green hills dotted with unique limestone formations were a sight to behold. It felt like we had entered another world. The weather was mild, with a bit of cloud cover, which made for some dramatic lighting across the landscape. The average temperature in Shikoku-Chuo in May ranges from 56°F (13°C) to 72°F (22°C), so it was comfortable for hiking.

Elena was fascinated by the oddly shaped rocks, and we spent a good hour exploring the area, taking photos, and simply soaking in the serene atmosphere. I couldn't help but reflect on how different this landscape is from the bustling streets of Bielefeld. It's moments like these that remind me of the importance of disconnecting from our daily routines and reconnecting with nature.
Sometimes, the most breathtaking views are found in the most unexpected places.
After our karst adventure, we made our way to the Amegaeri Waterfall. The hike to the falls was relatively easy, even for Elena, and the surrounding forest was incredibly peaceful. The sound of the water grew louder as we approached, building anticipation for the grand reveal. And it did not disappoint! The Amegaeri Waterfall cascaded down with such force and grace. We spent some time simply admiring the view and taking in the refreshing mist. I felt so grateful to be sharing these experiences with my family.

Next on our list was the Todoroki Falls. Reaching the falls required a bit more effort, involving a short bus ride from JR Awa Kainan Station and a bit of a walk. But let me tell you, it was worth every step! Known as one of Japan's top 100 waterfalls and the largest in Shikoku, Todoroki Falls is truly a sight to behold. The area is also referred to as the 99 Todoroki Falls because of the many waterfalls in the area. We took a leisurely two-hour walk up the 1,500m path leading to Nabewan Falls, the highest of them all. I learned that Todoroki means roaring in Japanese, and it was easy to see why. The power of the water was incredible, and the surrounding gorge was simply stunning. Elena was particularly excited about this waterfall, and she even dipped her toes in the cool water.

Before dinner, we took a little detour to the Suehiro Shopping Center. I wanted to pick up a few local snacks and souvenirs. It was a great opportunity to experience a bit of local life and support small businesses. I managed to find some interesting local crafts, and Elena was thrilled with her new Totoro plushie.

For dinner, we treated ourselves to a meal at Restaurant Obokekyo Mannaka. This restaurant is part of the Hotel Obokekyo Mannaka, and it's known for its delicious local cuisine and stunning views of the Iya Valley. The restaurant offers a mix of Japanese and international cuisine. Maximilian and I opted for a traditional Kaiseki dinner, while Elena enjoyed a kid-friendly set meal. The food was exquisite, and the views were simply breathtaking. It was the perfect way to end a perfect day.

As I sit here writing this, I'm filled with a sense of gratitude. Today was a reminder of the simple joys in life – spending time with family, connecting with nature, and discovering new places. I'm already excited about tomorrow's adventures, which include visiting Shikoku Village, the Kurushima Strait Observatory, and the Heike Yashiki Museum of Folklore. We might even stop by the Irish Pub Amontillado for a nightcap.
Until then, I bid you goodnight from the beautiful Shikoku Island!
