Kochi's Charms: A Day of History, Markets, and Local Flavors
Today was a delightful immersion into the heart of Kochi, a city that beautifully blends history, culture, and the vibrant spirit of its people. From exploring a majestic castle to wandering through a bustling market and soaking in the local atmosphere, it was a day filled with unforgettable experiences that I'm excited to share.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Dining Room Hibari. Maximilian and Elena were particularly excited to try some traditional Japanese breakfast items. I opted for a classic Tamagoyaki, a rolled omelet, which was perfectly sweet and savory. It was the perfect start to a day of exploration.

Kochi Castle: A Glimpse into History
Our first stop was Kochi Castle, a landmark that immediately captivated us with its grandeur. The castle, perched atop Otakasa Hill, offered a stunning view of the city. As we approached, I couldn’t help but marvel at the impressive stone walls and the intricate architecture. It's amazing to think that Kochi Castle is one of the few original castles in Japan, having survived fires and wars.

We climbed the steep stone steps, each one whispering tales of feudal lords and samurai. Elena was particularly fascinated by the *yazama-bei*, the walls with arrow-shaped holes used for defense. Maximilian, ever the engineer, was impressed by the castle's design, noting how the stone walls formed L-shapes to eliminate blind spots.
Inside the main keep, we explored the various levels, each filled with historical artifacts and exhibits. The panoramic view from the top was breathtaking, stretching across Kochi City. I imagined what it must have been like for the Yamauchi lords, who once resided here, surveying their domain. The castle is not just a historical building; it also serves as a museum that houses local treasures and important cultural properties.
It is not down in any map; true places never are.
We learned that the castle was originally built in 1601 by Yamauchi Kazutoyo. It was later restored in the mid-18th century after a fire, maintaining its original Edo-period design. What sets Kochi Castle apart is that it’s the only castle in Japan with its original castle tower and main keep intact. Exploring the castle grounds, we also discovered the main palace (honmaru-goten), which once served as the residence and office of the feudal lord.
Kochi Sunday Market: A Local Treasure
Leaving the castle, we headed straight to the Kochi Sunday Market. Stretching along Otesuji Street, the market is a vibrant tapestry of local life. It has been a tradition for over 300 years, and it’s easy to see why. The market was bustling with vendors selling everything from fresh produce and flowers to local crafts and antiques.

Elena was immediately drawn to a stall selling colorful candies, while Maximilian was intrigued by the local pottery. I enjoyed wandering through the rows of fresh vegetables and fruits, many of which I had never seen before. The vendors were friendly and eager to share their stories, making the experience all the more enriching.
We sampled some *imo ten*, a local specialty of potato tempura, which was absolutely delicious. We also tried *inaka sushi*, a type of country-style sushi made with local ingredients. It was a delightful culinary adventure, and I loved discovering new flavors. The market is not just a place for shopping; it’s a social gathering where locals and visitors come together to experience authentic regional culture.
Statues of the Three Tosa Samurai: Honoring Local Heroes
Next, we paid our respects to the Statues of the Three Tosa Samurai. These statues honor Sakamoto Ryoma, Takechi Hanpeita, and Nakaoka Shintaro, three influential figures who played a crucial role in Japan's modernization. I wanted to show Elena the statues of these three men, who were instrumental in bringing about Japan's modernization.

Ryoma, in particular, is a beloved figure in Kochi, known for his progressive ideas and efforts to unite the country. As we stood before the statues, I explained to Elena their significance and how they embodied the spirit of freedom and innovation. It was a humbling experience, connecting us to the rich history and values of this region. It is said that Kochi's mountain spirit of individuality and independence fostered fertile ground for radical and free thinking. There is even a saying that Freedom Comes from the Mountains of Tosa.
Lunch at Joyfull Kochi Otsu Shop: A Casual Affair
For lunch, we opted for a casual meal at Joyfull Kochi Otsu Shop. This family restaurant offered a variety of dishes, perfect for satisfying everyone's tastes. Maximilian enjoyed a hearty steak, while Elena chose a kid-friendly curry. I decided to try a local set meal, which included miso soup, rice, and grilled fish. It was a simple but satisfying meal, providing us with the energy we needed for the rest of the day.

Relaxing at Bar Salvador
As the day wound down, Maximilian and I decided to sneak away for a quick drink at Bar Salvador. Elena was happy to stay in our ryokan playing games. This cozy bar is known for its inviting ambiance and friendly staff. I opted for a local craft beer, while Maximilian enjoyed a glass of Japanese whisky. It was the perfect way to unwind and reflect on our day of adventures.

Dinner at Munagin: A Culinary Highlight
For dinner, we indulged in a special meal at Munagin, a restaurant known for its Unagi (freshwater eel). This was a culinary experience I had been looking forward to, and it did not disappoint. The eel was grilled to perfection, with a delicate balance of sweet and savory flavors. Elena, who is usually a picky eater, surprised us by enjoying the Unagi as well. The restaurant had a cozy atmosphere, and the service was impeccable.

P.S. I almost forgot! I found out that Sayuri Ishikawa is performing at the Kochi Prefectural Culture Hall today. What a treat for anyone who enjoys Enka music!
Also, I need to remember to buy a raincoat tomorrow. The weather forecast predicts some rain, and I don’t want to be caught unprepared like I was with the portable phone charger [].
