Sofia's Solo Escape to the Serene Con Dao Islands
Day 8: Reflecting on History and Heritage: A Day of Remembrance in Con Dao
Explore Con Dao's poignant history with visits to the Vietnam Heritage Tree and Hang Duong Cemetery, a day of reflection and remembrance.
Echoes of the Past
Today was a day of deep reflection, a journey into the heart of Con Dao's history and heritage. It's amazing how a place so serene and beautiful can hold so many stories of pain and resilience. I started my day with a strong Vietnamese coffee, ready to embrace whatever emotions the island had in store for me.
My morning began with a delightful breakfast at TYNA FOOD & COFFEE. The coffee was robust, and the Banh Mi was absolutely delicious. It was the perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploring. I made a mental note to try and recreate the Banh Mi when I get back home to Bielefeld, though I doubt it will taste the same without the Con Dao air.
With a full stomach, I set off to find the Vietnam Heritage Tree. The ride there was beautiful, the kind that makes you want to stop every few minutes to capture the scenery. The island is incredibly lush, with vibrant greenery contrasting against the clear blue sky. When I finally arrived, I was struck by the sheer size and presence of the tree. It’s more than just a tree; it's a living monument, a silent witness to the island's turbulent past. As I stood beneath its sprawling branches, I couldn't help but reflect on the countless stories it could tell. The sunlight filtering through the leaves created a mosaic of light and shadow, a reminder of the interplay between darkness and hope. I spent some time just breathing in the fresh air and feeling the connection to nature and history. It’s humbling to stand in the presence of something so old and resilient.

Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found in the quietest of places, where history whispers and nature comforts.
After the Heritage Tree, I needed something to lighten the mood and decided to have lunch at Con Son Seafood restaurant. The seafood was incredibly fresh, and the flavors were so vibrant. I opted for the grilled squid, which had a wonderful springy texture, and a refreshing passion fruit juice. It was a delightful meal, and the friendly service made it even better. The restaurant was bustling with both locals and tourists, creating a lively atmosphere. It was a great reminder of how food can bring people together, no matter their background.
In the afternoon, I braced myself for a visit to Hang Duong Cemetery. This is the final resting place of thousands of Vietnamese revolutionaries and patriots who sacrificed their lives for the country's liberty. As I walked through the cemetery, I felt a profound sense of sorrow and respect. Each tombstone tells a story of courage, sacrifice, and unwavering dedication to a cause. The air was heavy with history, and it was impossible not to be moved by the sheer number of lives lost.

I paid my respects at the grave of Võ Thị Sáu, a young woman who was executed at the age of 19 for her revolutionary activities. Her story is particularly poignant, a reminder of the human cost of conflict and the enduring power of the human spirit. I lit a stick of incense and stood in silence, thinking about her bravery and the sacrifices she made for her country.
The cemetery is divided into four zones, each with its own story to tell. Some graves are marked, while others remain anonymous, a testament to the countless individuals who gave their lives for Vietnam's independence. Despite the somber atmosphere, there was also a sense of peace, a feeling that these heroes were finally at rest. It was an emotional experience, one that left a lasting impression on me.
As evening approached, I decided to have dinner at An Ơi Cafe & Restaurant. This place is a gem! The atmosphere is cozy and welcoming, and the staff are incredibly friendly. I ordered a vegan curry, which was bursting with flavor and spices. It was the perfect comfort food after a long and emotionally draining day. I also tried their peanut butter coffee, which was surprisingly delicious – a must-try if you ever find yourself in Con Dao.

After dinner, I decided to check out Hide & Find Bar Côn Đảo. The bar has a cozy ambiance and a great selection of cocktails. It was the perfect place to unwind and reflect on the day's experiences. I struck up a conversation with a fellow traveler, and we shared stories about our adventures and the impact Con Dao had on us. It's amazing how travel can connect people from different corners of the world.

As I sipped my cocktail, I thought about Maximilian and Elena. I wished they were here to experience this with me, but I also knew that this solo journey was something I needed to do for myself. I miss them dearly, but I also cherish the moments of introspection and personal growth that this trip has afforded me. Perhaps one day, we can all come back here together and explore this beautiful and historically rich island as a family.
Tomorrow, I plan to visit the Côn Đảo National Park Tourist Office and Six Senses Con Dao. I’m looking forward to learning more about the island's natural beauty and perhaps indulging in a bit of luxury. Until then, I'll carry the memories and lessons of today with me, grateful for the opportunity to experience such a profound place.
Con Dao has a way of getting under your skin, of making you feel both humbled and inspired. It's a place where history and nature intertwine, creating an experience that is both unforgettable and deeply meaningful.
And as I prepare for tomorrow, I am reminded of a quote that encapsulates the spirit of Con Dao:
To truly understand a place, you must walk in the footsteps of those who came before you, and listen to the whispers of the past.
Good night from Con Dao.
