Karst Wonders and Lakeside Dreams

Today was a day of contrasts, a journey from the heights of Shikoku Karst to the serene depths of Lake Sameura. The memories we created today are ones I know we'll cherish for years to come. It’s amazing how a single day can offer such diverse and breathtaking experiences.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Joyfull Kochi Otsu Shop. It’s a family restaurant that reminded me a bit of the places Pieter and I used to frequent during our student days in Amsterdam. The atmosphere was bustling, filled with locals starting their day, and the food was simple but satisfying. Alessia, of course, was thrilled with her pancakes, and Pieter enjoyed a traditional Japanese breakfast set. I opted for a bit of both, savoring the mix of familiar and new flavors.

Fueled and ready, we set off for Shikoku Karst. The drive itself was an adventure, winding through lush green valleys and up into the mountains. As we ascended, the landscape transformed dramatically. The air grew cooler, and the dense foliage gave way to open meadows dotted with striking limestone formations. It felt like stepping into another world. I was reminded of the Dolomites back home in Italy, though these karst formations had a unique, almost otherworldly charm.

Reaching Shikoku Karst was like arriving at the edge of the world. The views were simply stunning. Rolling green hills stretched out as far as the eye could see, punctuated by jagged white rocks that seemed to defy gravity. Alessia was immediately captivated, running around and pointing out shapes in the stones. Pieter, ever the photographer, was in his element, snapping photos from every angle. I couldn’t resist joining in, trying to capture the essence of this surreal landscape. We spent hours exploring the area, hiking along the trails, and simply soaking in the breathtaking scenery. Alessia even tried to climb one of the smaller rocks, her adventurous spirit shining through.

Sometimes, the most beautiful places are those that feel untouched by time, where nature reigns supreme.

After our mountain adventure, we descended to the tranquil shores of Lake Sameura. The contrast was striking. From the rugged, windswept heights of the karst, we found ourselves in a peaceful oasis of calm, still waters surrounded by verdant forests. The lake was formed by the Sameura Dam, creating a vast reservoir that provides water to the region. But beyond its practical purpose, it’s a place of incredible beauty.

We had lunch at Munagin, a charming restaurant overlooking the lake. The food was delicious, featuring local specialties like freshwater fish and mountain vegetables. Alessia, surprisingly, was quite adventurous, trying a bit of everything. Pieter and I enjoyed a leisurely meal, savoring the flavors of Shikoku while gazing out at the serene waters. It was the perfect way to recharge after our morning hike.

After lunch, we decided to take a boat tour of the lake. The gentle breeze and the shimmering water created a sense of tranquility that was almost meditative. We cruised along the shoreline, admiring the lush forests and the occasional glimpse of wildlife. Alessia was fascinated by the ducks and swans gliding across the lake, and Pieter pointed out various species of birds nesting in the trees. I simply relaxed and enjoyed the moment, feeling grateful for the opportunity to experience such beauty with my family.

Before heading back, we made a stop at Sunshine Tai, a local shop known for its regional products. I was hoping to find a few souvenirs to bring back home, something to remind us of our time on Shikoku Island. The shop was filled with an array of local crafts, from pottery and textiles to food products and artwork. I picked up a beautiful hand-painted ceramic bowl and a small package of local tea. Alessia chose a colorful origami set, eager to try her hand at the Japanese art of paper folding. Pieter, as always, found a unique sake to add to his collection.

As the day drew to a close, we headed to Tosa Rokkon for dinner. This restaurant was a delightful find, offering a modern twist on traditional Tosa cuisine. The ambiance was elegant yet relaxed, and the service was impeccable. We indulged in a multi-course meal featuring fresh seafood, locally grown vegetables, and expertly prepared meats. Each dish was a work of art, both visually stunning and incredibly flavorful. Alessia, despite her initial hesitation, ended up loving the tempura and the grilled fish. Pieter and I savored every bite, appreciating the culinary artistry and the unique flavors of Shikoku.

As we drove back to our accommodation, I reflected on the day’s adventures. From the dramatic landscapes of Shikoku Karst to the tranquil beauty of Lake Sameura, we had experienced a wide range of emotions and sensations. It was a day filled with wonder, laughter, and shared moments that I knew we would treasure forever. I feel so fortunate to be able to share these experiences with my family, to create memories that will last a lifetime.

Tomorrow, we’re heading to Kami City Takashi Yanase Memorial Hall & Anpanman Museum, which I know Alessia is particularly excited about, followed by a visit to Kochi Castle. It promises to be another day of exploration, discovery, and family fun. I can’t wait to see what adventures await us!

Tonight, though, I'm feeling a bit like I forgot something important... Oh yes, that first aid kit! And Pieter is grumbling about his phone already being low on battery, so I guess we need to add a portable charger to the shopping list as well. Oh well. Even without these things, the day was perfect.
