Finding Peace in the Heart of Shikoku

Today was a day of immersing ourselves in the tranquil beauty of Shikoku, a journey that took us through ancient landscapes and vibrant local culture. It’s amazing how much you can discover when you venture off the beaten path, and today was a perfect example of that. From unique geological formations to terraced rice paddies, every moment was a feast for the senses.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Hakkenden Nankoku Osone in Nankoku. This charming spot offered a delightful start to the day with its traditional Japanese breakfast. I opted for the grilled fish set, while Pieter enjoyed the tamagoyaki (rolled omelette). Alessia, of course, was thrilled with her onigiri (rice balls). The cozy atmosphere and friendly staff made us feel right at home, fueling us for the adventures that lay ahead.

First on our itinerary was the enigmatic Dragon Rock. Located a short drive from Nankoku, this geological formation is as intriguing as its name suggests. As we approached, the rock's unique shape immediately captured our attention – it genuinely resembles a dragon's head emerging from the earth. Alessia was absolutely thrilled, running around and pretending to be a knight slaying the dragon. Pieter, ever the pragmatist, was fascinated by the geological processes that had shaped the rock over millennia. I, on the other hand, simply enjoyed the stunning panoramic views from the site, camera in hand, trying to capture the essence of this mystical place.

The air was fresh and clean, carrying the scent of pine and damp earth. We spent a good hour exploring the area, taking photos, and simply soaking in the peaceful atmosphere. It's moments like these, away from the hustle and bustle of city life, that remind me why I love to travel. There’s something magical about discovering a place that feels untouched by time, where nature reigns supreme.

The beauty of simplicity lies in the ability to find extraordinary moments in ordinary places.

Next, we set our sights on the Otoyo Yone Rice Terraces. The drive itself was an adventure, winding through narrow mountain roads with breathtaking vistas at every turn. As we approached the terraces, the landscape transformed into a patchwork of vibrant green fields, cascading down the hillsides like a verdant staircase.

The Otoyo Yone Rice Terraces are a testament to the ingenuity and perseverance of the local farmers who have cultivated these fields for centuries. The terraces not only provide sustenance but also create a stunning visual spectacle. We parked the car and took a leisurely stroll along the narrow paths that crisscrossed the fields, marveling at the intricate irrigation systems and the sheer dedication required to maintain such a landscape.

Alessia was particularly fascinated by the tiny creatures she found in the rice paddies – tadpoles, snails, and various insects. She spent ages crouched down, observing them with childlike wonder, while Pieter and I took turns snapping photos of the stunning scenery. We even saw a group of farmers tending to their crops, their faces etched with the wisdom of generations. It was a humbling experience, a reminder of the deep connection between humanity and nature.

For lunch, we stopped at Amekaze Shokudo in Nankoku, a restaurant renowned for its authentic Japanese cuisine and breathtaking views of the surrounding rice fields. The restaurant itself was charming, with a rustic interior and large windows that framed the picturesque landscape. We were lucky enough to snag a table by the window, and as we waited for our food, we simply gazed out at the mesmerizing view.

The menu at Amekaze Shokudo featured a variety of traditional dishes made from locally sourced ingredients. I opted for the katsudon (pork cutlet rice bowl), while Pieter chose the tempura udon. Alessia, predictably, went for the chicken karaage (fried chicken). The food was absolutely delicious, bursting with fresh flavors and cooked to perfection. It was the perfect way to refuel after a morning of exploring.

After lunch, we decided to indulge in a little retail therapy at the Suehiro Shopping Center. This local shopping hub offered a glimpse into the everyday lives of the people of Shikoku. We wandered through the aisles, browsing the various shops and stalls, marveling at the array of local products on offer. Alessia was particularly excited by the toy store, while Pieter was drawn to the electronics section. I, of course, couldn't resist picking up a few souvenirs for friends and family back home.

We sampled some local snacks, bought a few trinkets, and generally enjoyed the lively atmosphere of the shopping center. It was a great way to immerse ourselves in the local culture and get a feel for the rhythm of daily life in Shikoku. Plus, I managed to find a beautiful hand-painted fan that I know my mother will absolutely love.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way to Kohanyu in Kami for dinner. This restaurant and café is known for its traditional Japanese cuisine and cozy atmosphere. Nestled in a serene location, it provided the perfect setting for a relaxing evening meal. The drive to the restaurant was scenic, with the setting sun casting a golden glow over the landscape.

Kohanyu is an adults-only accommodation, but the restaurant welcomes families. The staff were incredibly welcoming, and the ambiance was both elegant and comfortable. We savored a multi-course meal featuring local delicacies, each dish a work of art. The fresh seafood and seasonal vegetables were particularly outstanding. Alessia enjoyed her specially prepared children's meal, while Pieter and I relished the opportunity to sample some local sake. The meal was a fitting end to a day filled with exploration and discovery.

Tomorrow, we are planning to visit the Bizan Ropeway for panoramic views and explore the vibrant Kochi Sunday Market. It’s always exciting to anticipate what new adventures await, and I have a feeling tomorrow will be just as memorable as today.

As I sit here, reflecting on the day's adventures, I'm filled with a sense of gratitude and contentment. Shikoku has a way of captivating your soul, of reminding you of the simple joys in life. It’s a place where you can slow down, breathe deep, and truly appreciate the beauty that surrounds you. And as we prepare for our next adventure, I can't help but feel excited about what else this enchanting island has in store for us.
