A Final Day of Discoveries
As our Shikoku adventure draws to a close, I find myself filled with a mix of emotions. There's a sense of accomplishment for all that we've seen and done, a tinge of sadness that our time here is ending, and an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for the experiences we've shared as a family. Today was all about savoring those last moments and soaking in the unique beauty of this island.
Kurushima Strait Observatory. Pieter, Alessia, and I piled into our rental car, eager to catch one last breathtaking view. The drive itself was lovely, winding through coastal roads with glimpses of the sparkling sea. As we approached the observatory, the anticipation grew. I had read that the observatory was designed to blend into the landscape, and it truly did. It was built on top of Mount Kiro, offering a 360-degree view of the surrounding area.
Sometimes, the most beautiful journeys are those that lead us to unexpected places, both geographically and within ourselves.

Afterward, our stomachs started to rumble, reminding us it was time for breakfast. We drove to Osusowake Shokudo Mado in Kami, a charming spot known for its traditional Japanese cuisine. The name 'Osusowake' itself embodies the spirit of sharing and community, which I found incredibly heartwarming. The restaurant had a casual, welcoming atmosphere, and we immediately felt at home. The staff was friendly, and the aroma of home-style cooking filled the air. I ordered a traditional teishoku meal, complete with rice, miso soup, and grilled fish. Pieter opted for a hearty bowl of ramen, while Alessia happily munched on some onigiri (rice balls). The food was simple but delicious, made with fresh, local ingredients. It was a comforting meal that nourished both our bodies and souls.

With our bellies full and our spirits lifted, we set off for our next destination: Ōboke Gorge. The drive took us inland, through winding mountain roads and past picturesque villages. As we approached the gorge, the landscape transformed into a dramatic display of nature's power. The Yoshino River had carved its way through the Shikoku Mountains, creating steep, rocky canyons that were both awe-inspiring and a little intimidating. The name 'Ōboke' means 'big dangerous steps,' a fitting description for the rugged terrain.

We parked the car and took a leisurely walk along the gorge, marveling at the emerald-green waters and the towering cliffs. The Yoshino River is known for its whitewater rafting, and I could see why. The rapids looked exhilarating, but perhaps a bit too adventurous for Alessia. Instead, we opted for a more tranquil experience: a sightseeing boat cruise down the river. The boat ride was gentle and relaxing, allowing us to soak in the beauty of the gorge from a different perspective. Our guide pointed out interesting rock formations, many of which resembled animals. Alessia was thrilled when she spotted one that looked like a turtle!
For lunch, we stopped at Yuzuan Restaurant, a place I had read about that promised a unique culinary experience. And unique it was! The parking lot itself was like an outdoor museum, filled with quirky objects and vintage cars. Inside, the decor was just as whimsical, with statues and artwork adorning every corner. The menu, disguised as a newspaper, added to the fun. I decided to try their signature omuraisu (rice omelet), while Pieter went for the katsuo no tataki (seared tuna). Alessia, of course, wanted the biggest fried shrimp in Japan, a claim Yuzuan proudly boasts. The food was delicious, and the portions were enormous! It was a truly memorable meal, full of laughter and surprises.

As the afternoon wore on, we made our way to our final dinner spot: Restaurant&Cafe Riina in Shikokuchuo. I had heard they used fresh, local ingredients, and I was eager to try their cuisine. The restaurant had a cozy atmosphere, and we were greeted warmly by the staff. I opted for a pasta dish featuring seasonal vegetables, while Pieter chose a meat dish. Alessia, predictably, ordered pizza. The food was delicious, and it was clear that the chef took pride in using the freshest ingredients. It was a satisfying end to a day filled with culinary delights.

To end our final night, we decided to visit Beer Wine and Ate Mangetsu, a cozy bar in Kochi. It was the perfect spot to unwind and reflect on our journey. The owner was friendly and knowledgeable about craft beers, and the atmosphere was relaxed and inviting. I sampled a couple of local brews while Pieter enjoyed a glass of wine. We chatted about our favorite moments from the trip, reminiscing about the temples we had visited, the landscapes we had explored, and the delicious food we had devoured. It was the perfect way to say goodbye to Shikoku.
