Day 11: Riding the Whirlwinds: A Day of Natural Wonders and Temple Serenity on Shikoku
Experience the thrill of Naruto Whirlpools & the peace of Umpenji Temple. A day of natural beauty and spiritual reflection on Shikoku Island.
Chasing Giants and Finding Peace
Today was a day of stark contrasts, a blend of raw natural power and serene spiritual reflection. Shikoku Island continues to surprise me with its diverse offerings. From the turbulent waters of Naruto to the tranquil heights of Umpenji Temple, it was a day that tested my sea legs and soothed my soul. Alessia was particularly excited, her little eyes wide with wonder at every turn. Pieter, ever the stoic Dutchman, even cracked a smile or two, especially when we indulged in some local delicacies.
Our day began early with a hearty breakfast at Munagin in Kochi. I opted for a traditional Japanese breakfast set, while Pieter, surprisingly, went for the toast and eggs. Alessia, as always, wanted pancakes. It’s funny how even when we’re surrounded by new and exciting cuisines, she still craves the familiar comfort of a fluffy pancake. Fueled up, we set off for the Naruto Whirlpools, eager to witness the spectacle I had read so much about.
The Roaring Naruto Whirlpools
The drive to Naruto was scenic, winding through lush green hills and past quaint villages. As we approached the coast, the air grew thick with the salty tang of the sea. We arrived at Naruto Park, buzzing with anticipation. I had checked the tide schedule beforehand, knowing that timing is everything when it comes to witnessing the full force of the whirlpools. August is said to be a great time to see them, so I was hoping for a good show.
We chose to experience the whirlpools via the Uzunomichi Walkway, a glass-floored observatory extending under the Onaruto Bridge, 45 meters above the sea. The walkway itself was an experience, the slight sway of the bridge adding to the thrill. Looking down through the glass panels was both exhilarating and slightly terrifying. The water churned and swirled beneath us, a chaotic ballet of nature's forces. The whirlpools were indeed a sight to behold – massive vortexes of water, some reaching up to 20 meters in diameter, created by the meeting of the Seto Inland Sea and the Pacific Ocean. Alessia was mesmerized, pointing and gasping at the swirling patterns. Pieter, meanwhile, was busy capturing the scene with his camera, trying to get the perfect shot of the swirling chaos below.
To witness such raw power, such untamed energy, is a humbling reminder of the forces that shape our world.
I must admit, the sheer power of the whirlpools was awe-inspiring. It's easy to forget, in our modern lives, just how potent nature can be. The Naruto Whirlpools are a stark reminder of the earth's untamed energy, a force that demands respect and admiration. We spent a good hour watching the spectacle, completely captivated by the ever-changing patterns of the water.

A Taste of Kochi: Bonito at Tataki Kobo
After the exhilarating experience at Naruto, our stomachs were rumbling. We drove back towards Kochi, our minds set on sampling some local cuisine. Lunch was at Tataki Kobo, a restaurant renowned for its *katsuo tataki*, seared bonito. Kochi is famous for this dish, and I was eager to try the authentic version.
The restaurant was bustling with locals and tourists alike. The aroma of seared fish filled the air, making our mouths water in anticipation. We ordered a selection of *tataki* dishes, each prepared with the freshest bonito and seared to perfection over straw. The smoky flavor of the fish, combined with the tangy ponzu sauce and fresh condiments, was simply divine. Alessia, surprisingly, enjoyed the *tataki* as well, devouring several slices with gusto. Pieter, a man of few words when it comes to food, simply nodded in approval, his eyes closed in appreciation.

Spiritual Heights: Umpenji Temple
With our bellies full and our spirits high, we embarked on the next leg of our journey: Umpenji Temple. This temple, the 66th on the Shikoku Pilgrimage, is located high in the mountains, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. Getting to the temple was an adventure in itself. We opted for the ropeway, which offered stunning panoramic views as we ascended. The air grew cooler as we climbed, the scent of pine filling our lungs. As the ropeway climbed, the views became increasingly spectacular.
Upon reaching the summit, we stepped into a different world. Umpenji Temple exudes an aura of tranquility and peace. The ancient buildings, weathered by time and the elements, stand in silent testament to centuries of devotion. The temple grounds are dotted with statues of Buddha's disciples, each with a unique expression and pose. We wandered through the grounds, soaking in the serene atmosphere. Alessia, initially restless, soon succumbed to the temple's calming influence, her footsteps slowing to a reverent pace. I lit a stick of incense and offered a prayer for our family, for safe travels, and for the continued opportunity to experience the beauty of the world.

Umpenji Temple has a rich history, founded by Kobo Daishi, a revered Buddhist monk, over 1200 years ago. It served as a place of study and training for monks from all over Shikoku. The temple is also known as Shikoku Koya. The temple has also served as an imperial temple. It's easy to see why this place has been a spiritual sanctuary for so long. The views from the temple are simply breathtaking. From the vantage point, you can see the Seto Inland Sea and the Sanuki Plains.
AEON Mall and Dinner
As the day drew to a close, we made a quick stop at AEON MALL Kochi. Alessia needed a new book, and Pieter wanted to pick up some local snacks. The mall was a welcome change of pace after a day of natural wonders and spiritual contemplation. We browsed the shops, enjoying the air conditioning and the lively atmosphere. Alessia found a manga she liked, and Pieter stocked up on *senbei* (rice crackers). I picked up a few small souvenirs for my friends back in Haarlem.

Dinner was a casual affair at Yoronotaki Gomenten, an *izakaya* (Japanese pub) in Kochi. We ordered a selection of small dishes – grilled skewers, *takoyaki* (octopus balls), and *yakitori* (grilled chicken) – washed down with cold beer and *sake*. It was the perfect way to end a long and eventful day. Alessia fell asleep on my lap, exhausted but content. Pieter and I lingered over our drinks, reminiscing about the day's adventures.

Tomorrow marks our last day on Shikoku Island. We plan to visit the Kurushima Strait Observatory and Ōboke Gorge, squeezing in as much as possible before we head back to Tokyo. I am also hoping to grab a drink at Beer Wine and Ate Mangetsu to celebrate the end of our trip. Shikoku has been an incredible experience, a journey filled with natural beauty, cultural immersion, and delicious food. I’m already looking forward to our next adventure.
