Swinging Through History in Iya Valley

Today was nothing short of magical as we ventured deep into the heart of Shikoku Island, exploring the remote and stunning Iya Valley. It felt like stepping back in time, surrounded by lush landscapes and ancient traditions. The highlight, without a doubt, was our daring crossings of the famed vine bridges, a testament to human ingenuity and a thrilling experience for the whole family.

The day started with a hearty breakfast at Eki-mae Shokudo. This charming eatery, recommended by several locals, was the perfect spot to fuel up for our adventures. I opted for a traditional Japanese breakfast set, complete with grilled fish, miso soup, and perfectly steamed rice. Pieter went for the Tamago Kake Gohan (egg over rice), while Alessia enjoyed a simplified version with just rice and a sprinkle of seaweed. It was simple, comforting, and exactly what we needed to kick off our day. The owner was incredibly kind, making us feel right at home, a testament to the warm hospitality we've encountered throughout Shikoku.

After breakfast, we set off towards the Iya Valley, a drive that in itself was an experience. The roads wound through verdant mountains, with glimpses of crystal-clear rivers below. It was easy to see why this valley has been a refuge for centuries, a place of secluded beauty and tranquility. I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe as we drove deeper into the valley, the air growing fresher with each turn.

Our main destination was the famed Vine Bridge in the Iya Valley. As we approached, the anticipation grew. The bridge, constructed from woven vines, looked both precarious and incredibly charming. I learned that these bridges were originally built by the Heike clan as a means of evading enemies, a strategic design that allowed them to quickly sever the bridge in times of danger. Today, they are reinforced with steel cables for safety, but the thrill of crossing remains.

Before braving the bridge, we paid the entrance fee and took a moment to appreciate the craftsmanship. The vines were thick and sturdy, and the gaps between the planks offered tantalizing views of the river below. Alessia was a bit nervous at first, but with Pieter holding her hand, she bravely took her first step.

The creaking of the vines and the gentle sway of the bridge created a symphony of adventure, a reminder that some of the best experiences are those that challenge us just a little.
Crossing the bridge was an exhilarating experience. With each step, the bridge swayed gently, offering glimpses of the clear water rushing beneath our feet. The views of the surrounding forest were breathtaking, a tapestry of greens and browns that stretched as far as the eye could see. I made sure to take plenty of photos, capturing the moment and the stunning scenery. Alessia, now a seasoned adventurer, even started to enjoy the sway, giggling with delight as we reached the other side.

After our vine bridge adventure, we explored the surrounding area. We took a short walk to the nearby Biwa Waterfall, a serene cascade of water that provided a peaceful respite. Alessia loved throwing pebbles into the pool at the base of the falls, while Pieter and I simply enjoyed the tranquil atmosphere.

For lunch, we stopped at Yoronotaki Gomenten. This restaurant offered a cozy atmosphere and a menu filled with local specialties. I decided to try the Awadori chicken, a local delicacy known for its tender and flavorful meat. Pieter opted for the Iya soba, a buckwheat noodle dish unique to the region. Alessia, ever the picky eater, was happy with a simple bowl of Udon noodles. The meal was delicious and satisfying, providing us with the energy we needed for the rest of our day.

Our next stop was the Mountain bookshop. Nestled amidst the mountains, this charming shop was a haven for book lovers. We spent a delightful hour browsing the shelves, discovering titles about local folklore, history, and nature. I picked up a guidebook about the native plants of Shikoku, hoping to learn more about the region's unique flora. Pieter found a collection of Japanese folktales, while Alessia was thrilled to find a book about Japanese castles.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way to Dining Room Hibari for dinner. I had heard rave reviews about their Katsudon, a breaded pork cutlet served over rice with egg, and I was eager to try it. The restaurant was bustling with locals, a testament to its popularity. When my Katsudon arrived, I understood the hype. The pork was perfectly crispy, the egg was fluffy, and the rice was cooked to perfection. It was a truly satisfying meal, the perfect way to end our day of exploring. Pieter enjoyed a hearty bowl of ramen, while Alessia devoured a plate of chicken karaage.

Reflecting on the day, I am filled with a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience the beauty and history of the Iya Valley. The vine bridges were more than just a tourist attraction; they were a symbol of resilience and ingenuity. The lush landscapes and tranquil atmosphere offered a welcome escape from the hustle and bustle of modern life. And the delicious local cuisine provided a taste of Shikoku's unique culinary heritage.

Tomorrow, we're off to explore the Dogo Onsen Main Building and Matsuyama Castle. I'm excited to immerse ourselves in more of Shikoku's rich history and culture.

As I write this, Alessia is already fast asleep, dreaming of vine bridges and waterfalls. Pieter is reading his new book of Japanese folktales, a smile on his face. And I am filled with anticipation for the adventures that tomorrow will bring. Shikoku Island continues to surprise and delight us at every turn, and I can't wait to see what other hidden gems we will discover.
