Day 8: Soaring High: Condors and Ancient Echoes Near Machu Picchu
Discover the majestic Andean Condors at Chonta Mirador and immerse yourself in the vibrant culture of Machu Picchu Pueblo.
Whispers of the Andes
Today was a day of breathtaking heights and profound cultural immersion. Leaving the familiar embrace of Aguas Calientes, I ventured into the heart of the Andean landscape, seeking both the soaring majesty of the condors and the vibrant pulse of local life. It was a day that reminded me why I travel: to witness nature's grandeur and connect with the human spirit.
My day began with a delightful breakfast at Crepería de París - Machupicchu. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee and the sweet scent of crepes filled the air, a perfect start to an adventurous day. I opted for a classic ham and cheese crepe, a simple yet satisfying choice that fueled me for the journey ahead. The cozy atmosphere of the crepería, bustling with fellow travelers, created a sense of camaraderie and anticipation for the day's explorations.
Fueled and ready, I set off towards Chonta Mirador de Cóndores. The journey itself was an experience, winding through the stunning Andean foothills. The landscape transformed with every turn, revealing verdant valleys and towering peaks cloaked in mist. As I ascended, the air grew crisper, carrying the scent of eucalyptus and damp earth. It was a sensory symphony that invigorated my soul.
The hike to the Mirador was moderately challenging, a welcome exertion that brought me closer to the land. The trail snaked through rugged terrain, demanding both physical and mental engagement. Every step was a reminder of the ancient Incas who once traversed these mountains, their footsteps echoing through time. I imagined them, strong and resilient, navigating these very paths with purpose and determination.
Reaching the Mirador, I was greeted by a sight that stole my breath away. The Chonta Canyon stretched before me, a vast chasm carved by the relentless forces of nature. And then, they appeared: the Andean condors. These magnificent birds, with their impressive wingspans, soared effortlessly through the air currents, their silhouettes stark against the azure sky. It was a privilege to witness their graceful dance, a testament to the raw beauty of the natural world.

Witnessing the condors in their natural habitat was a powerful reminder of the delicate balance of our ecosystem and the importance of conservation efforts.
I spent hours at the Mirador, simply observing the condors and absorbing the surrounding landscape. The silence was broken only by the wind and the occasional cry of a bird, a symphony of nature that transported me to a realm of profound peace. I felt a deep connection to the earth, a sense of belonging that transcended language and culture.
After my time with the condors, I returned to Machu Picchu Pueblo, eager to immerse myself in the local culture. My first stop was Manco Capac Square, the heart of the town. The square was alive with activity, a vibrant tapestry of sights, sounds, and smells. Locals and tourists mingled, creating a melting pot of cultures and experiences. I watched children playing, vendors selling their wares, and families strolling hand-in-hand, all bathed in the warm afternoon light.

I learned that Manco Capac was the legendary founder of the Inca dynasty, believed to be the son of the sun god Inti. According to legend, he emerged from Lake Titicaca with his sister-wife Mama Ocllo, tasked with civilizing the people and establishing a great empire. It was fascinating to imagine the square as the center of Incan life centuries ago.
For lunch, I decided to try Incontri del Pueblo Viejo. The restaurant had great reviews, and I was in the mood for some Italian food. It was a delightful culinary experience, and I savored every bite while enjoying the lively atmosphere of the town. The pizza was unexpectedly good, a testament to the global influences that have shaped Peruvian cuisine. It was a comforting reminder of home, a taste of Italy in the heart of the Andes.

After lunch, I decided to explore Quechua´s House - Coffee Bookshop. I'm always drawn to bookstores, especially those with a cozy atmosphere and a good selection of local literature. This place did not disappoint. The aroma of coffee mingled with the scent of old books, creating an irresistible invitation to linger. I browsed the shelves, discovering titles that offered insights into Peruvian history, culture, and mythology. It was a treasure trove of knowledge, a portal to another world.

I purchased a book of Incan legends, eager to delve deeper into the mysteries of this ancient civilization. As a translator, I appreciate the power of language to connect us to the past and to bridge cultural divides. I found a comfortable chair, ordered a cup of coffee, and lost myself in the stories of gods, heroes, and mythical creatures. It was a perfect afternoon, a blend of intellectual stimulation and sensory pleasure.
As the day drew to a close, I made my way to the Restaurante Tinkuy Buffet Restaurant at Sanctuary Lodge for dinner. Located near the entrance to Machu Picchu, the restaurant offered stunning views of the surrounding mountains. The buffet was a feast of flavors, showcasing the diversity of Peruvian cuisine. I sampled a variety of dishes, from savory stews to fresh salads, each one a culinary masterpiece.

The Restaurante Tinkuy Buffet Restaurant is conveniently located near the entrance of Machu Picchu. I think that the price might be a bit high but it is worth remembering that the restaurant is in a very isolated spot on the edge of the Amazon Jungle. The food was well-cooked, plentiful and offered something to suit most tastes.
As I savored my meal, I reflected on the day's experiences. From the soaring heights of Chonta Mirador to the vibrant streets of Machu Picchu Pueblo, it had been a day of profound discovery. I had witnessed the majesty of nature, connected with the local culture, and nourished my soul with new knowledge and experiences.
Looking ahead to tomorrow, I'm excited to explore more of the Sacred Valley. My itinerary includes a visit to Ollantaytambo, a charming town with impressive Inca ruins, and the Sacred Rock at Machu Picchu, a place of spiritual significance. I'm also planning to visit the Blues RestoBarCaffe in the evening. I'm eager to uncover more of Peru's hidden treasures and to share my experiences with you.
As I prepare for another day of adventure, I'm grateful for the opportunity to explore this incredible country and to connect with its rich history and vibrant culture. Peru has captured my heart, and I know that this journey will stay with me long after I return home to Haarlem. And I am sure that Pieter and Alessia would have loved to join me on this adventure.
Good night from Machu Picchu!
Tomorrow is the last day of my trip. I will visit Ollantaytambo, and the Sacred Rock at Machu Picchu. And I will have dinner at QUNUQ RESTAURANT | Sumaq Machu Picchu Hotel.
Arrivederci!
