Beyond the Citadel: Discovering Machu Picchu's Hidden Gems

Today was all about venturing off the beaten path around Machu Picchu. I wanted to see what other treasures this region held, beyond the iconic citadel. It turned out to be a day filled with unexpected discoveries, from lesser-known Inca sites to tranquil waterfalls and even a taste of the local nightlife. It's amazing how much more there is to explore when you step away from the main attraction!

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Laurita Wasi Machu Picchu. I fueled up with some delicious Peruvian coffee and a traditional breakfast, which gave me the energy I needed for the day’s adventures. With a spring in my step, I set out to explore the archaeological site of Choquesuysuy.

Choquesuysuy is a bit of a hidden gem. It's located a short distance from Aguas Calientes and offers a fascinating glimpse into Inca life, away from the crowds. The site is believed to have been dedicated to agriculture, and as I wandered through the ancient stone structures, I imagined the Incas cultivating the land and performing their rituals here. The energy of the place was palpable, and I felt a deep connection to the past. The stonework was incredible, and it was easy to picture what life might have been like centuries ago. It’s amazing to think about the hands that built these walls and the lives that unfolded within them.

After Choquesuysuy, I decided to immerse myself in nature with a visit to Mandor.

The walk to Mandor was an adventure in itself, a trail winding through lush cloud forest. The air was thick with humidity, and the sounds of the jungle surrounded me. I passed vibrant orchids and towering trees, feeling completely enveloped by the natural world. It was a welcome change of pace from the more crowded tourist spots. I was on the lookout for the famous spectacled bear, but unfortunately, I had no luck spotting one. Maybe next time!

Reaching Mandor, I was greeted by the sight of a stunning waterfall cascading down the rocks. The water was crystal clear, and the mist created a refreshing coolness in the air. I took some time to relax by the falls, soaking in the tranquility and natural beauty. I even dipped my toes in the water, which was surprisingly cold! It was the perfect spot for reflection and rejuvenation, a true escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

Nature always wears the colors of the spirit.

For lunch, I headed to Toto's House, a restaurant known for its traditional Peruvian cuisine.

I indulged in a delicious ceviche, savoring the fresh flavors of the fish and the tangy marinade. The restaurant had a lively atmosphere, with live music and friendly staff. It was a great place to relax and enjoy the local culture. I even tried a Pisco sour, the national drink of Peru, which was the perfect complement to my meal. Pieter would have loved this place; he always appreciates good food and a vibrant atmosphere.

As the sun began to set, I made my way back to Aguas Calientes, ready to experience the town’s nightlife. I decided to check out Modo Restobar, a bar known for its creative cocktails and lively ambiance.

The bar was buzzing with locals and tourists alike, all enjoying the evening. I ordered a Chilcano and chatted with some fellow travelers, sharing stories and experiences. The music was great, and the energy was infectious. It was a fun way to end the day, immersing myself in the local scene.

Before heading back to my room, I had dinner at Restaurante Chicha Grill Cuisine.

The aroma of grilled meats filled the air, and I knew I was in for a treat. I ordered a mixed grill, sampling a variety of local meats and vegetables. The food was cooked to perfection, and the flavors were incredible. The restaurant had a cozy and inviting atmosphere, making it the perfect place for a relaxed and satisfying meal.

As I walked back to my accommodations, I reflected on the day’s adventures. From exploring ancient ruins to relaxing by a waterfall and experiencing the local nightlife, it had been a day filled with unexpected discoveries. I am so grateful for the opportunity to explore this incredible region and immerse myself in its rich culture and natural beauty.

Tomorrow, I plan to visit Chonta Mirador de Cóndores, hoping to catch a glimpse of these majestic birds in flight. I'm also looking forward to exploring Manco Capac Square and perhaps finding a good book at Quechua’s House - Coffee Bookshop. It’s exciting to think about what new experiences await me.

This trip has been such a rewarding experience. Being here by myself has given me time to reflect. It's made me realize how much I value my family back home. I miss Pieter and Alessia dearly and can't wait to share all my stories with them. I know Alessia would be fascinated by the animals and the history of this place. I'm already planning a family trip back here someday. For now, though, I’ll continue to soak in all the beauty and wonder that Peru has to offer. Goodnight from Aguas Calientes! I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings.

Tomorrow I am planning to visit Chonta Mirador de Cóndores, where I hope to see Condors, and then I will head to Manco Capac Square. I will also look for a nice place to have lunch, and for a coffee shop to relax in the afternoon.
