Exploring Takayama's Treasures
Today was a day of immersing ourselves in the heart of Takayama, a city that beautifully blends nature, history, and culture. Nang and I set out with a sense of excitement, ready to explore the hidden gems of this charming Japanese town. It’s amazing how much character and tradition is packed into every corner here, making it a truly enriching experience.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Hakusuien , where we enjoyed a traditional Japanese meal. The restaurant itself was a sight to behold, with its classic architecture adding to the authentic experience. I savored every bite, appreciating the fresh, local ingredients that made the meal so flavorful. It was the perfect start to a day filled with exploration and discovery.

Nature's Embrace
After breakfast, we ventured into the Nature Forest , eager to experience the tranquility of the Japanese wilderness. The forest was a serene escape from the bustling town, with towering trees and lush greenery creating a peaceful atmosphere. We took a leisurely stroll along the winding paths, listening to the soothing sounds of nature. The air was crisp and clean, a welcome change from the city, and I felt a sense of calm wash over me as we walked hand in hand.

The best view comes after the hardest climb.
As we walked, I couldn’t help but reflect on the importance of preserving these natural spaces. It’s a reminder of the simple beauty that exists outside of our modern lives, and a testament to the enduring power of nature. I made sure to capture the beauty with my camera, hoping to share the serenity with those back home in Montreal.
Stepping Back in Time
Next on our itinerary was the Hida no Sato Open Air Museum , a place that truly transported us back in time. This museum showcases over 30 traditional houses from the Hida region, each one meticulously preserved and filled with artifacts from the Edo period. As we wandered through the village-like setting, we were able to get a glimpse into the lives of the people who lived here centuries ago. The gassho-zukuri farmhouses, with their steep thatched roofs, were particularly impressive, a testament to the ingenuity and craftsmanship of the local people.

Nang was particularly fascinated by the intricate details of the houses, commenting on the craftsmanship and the resourcefulness of the people who built them. We explored the interiors, marveling at the tools and utensils used in everyday life, and imagining what it must have been like to live in such a remote and self-sufficient community. The Hida Folk Village offered a unique perspective on the cultural heritage of the region, and I felt a deep appreciation for the traditions that have been passed down through generations.
Delving into History
Our historical journey continued at the Takayama City Museum , housed in a beautiful building that once served as the town hall. The museum provided a comprehensive overview of Takayama’s history, from its early days as a merchant town to its role in the modern era. We explored the exhibits, learning about the city’s important figures and events, and gaining a deeper understanding of its cultural identity. The museum was well-curated, with informative displays and fascinating artifacts that brought the past to life. I found myself particularly interested in the exhibits on local crafts, which highlighted the skill and artistry of the region's artisans.

Nang, with her accounting background, was drawn to the historical records and administrative documents on display, intrigued by the way the city was governed in the past. We spent a considerable amount of time discussing the significance of these documents, marveling at the evolution of governance and the enduring values that have shaped Takayama’s identity.
A Culinary Interlude
Lunch at Zensuke was a delightful experience, a chance to savor the local flavors and recharge for the afternoon’s activities. The restaurant was cozy and inviting, with a menu that featured a variety of traditional dishes. I opted for the Hida beef skewers, a regional specialty known for its tenderness and rich flavor. Nang chose the soba noodles, a light and refreshing dish that was perfect for the warm weather. The meal was a true culinary delight, a testament to the quality of the local ingredients and the skill of the chefs. As we ate, we chatted about our experiences so far, marveling at the beauty and charm of Takayama.

Evening Reflections
As evening approached, we made our way to Kita no Sho , a restaurant housed in a 250-year-old Gassho-style building. The ambiance was enchanting, with traditional decor and a warm, inviting atmosphere. For dinner, I decided on a Hoba miso plate with Hida beef, while Nang enjoyed salt-grilled fish. Each dish was a masterpiece, showcasing the unique flavors of the region.

Later, we considered visiting Tenshukaku , a local bar, but decided to retire early to our hotel, Onyado Yuinosho, to rest and prepare for tomorrow's adventures. The prospect of exploring more of Shirakawa-go and its surroundings filled us with excitement. Tomorrow, we plan to visit the Shirakawago Three Houses and the Gokayama Folklore Museum , eager to delve deeper into the region’s cultural heritage. I’m also looking forward to seeing the Hida Takayama Museum of Art, hoping to gain a better understanding of the local art scene.
