Echoes of Tradition

Today, on the fifth day of our adventure in Shirakawa-go, Nang and I set out to deepen our understanding of this unique region. It wasn't just about seeing the sights, but about feeling the history and appreciating the artistry woven into the very fabric of this place. We were ready to explore museums, admire art, and savor the local flavors, hoping to capture the essence of Shirakawa-go.

Our first stop was the Shirakawago Three Houses [i]. Stepping inside these traditional gassho-zukuri farmhouses felt like stepping back in time. Each house offered a glimpse into the lives of the families who once lived there, showcasing their tools, furniture, and everyday items. I was particularly struck by the ingenuity of the architecture, designed to withstand the heavy snowfall of the region. Nang, ever the keen observer, pointed out the intricate details in the woodwork and the clever use of space [i]. It was a humbling experience to witness the resourcefulness and resilience of the people who called these houses home. It made me think of my own family history, and the challenges my ancestors faced in Thailand. It reinforced how important it is to preserve these cultural treasures for future generations.

From there, we ventured to the Gokayama Folklore Museum [i, 38]. Although technically in Gokayama, which is a neighboring area also known for its gassho-zukuri villages, it was a worthwhile trip to delve deeper into the region's heritage. The museum is housed in a 200-year-old gassho-zukuri house, the oldest in Suganuma, which added to the immersive experience. Inside, we discovered exhibits detailing the traditional farming practices, silk production, and unique customs of the area. I was fascinated by the displays showcasing tools and techniques used in niter (saltpeter) production, an essential ingredient for gunpowder. Nang was particularly interested in the exhibits about the local washi paper production. We learned about the importance of community and self-sufficiency in this remote mountain village. The museum visit gave us a profound appreciation for the ingenuity and resourcefulness of the people who have lived in this region for centuries.

Lunch called, and we headed to Tanaka-ya, a restaurant recommended for its traditional local cuisine. The restaurant itself was in a charming building, adding to the overall ambiance. I opted for a hearty bowl of udon, while Nang chose a Hoba Miso set, a regional specialty where miso is served on a magnolia leaf. The flavors were rich and comforting, a perfect reflection of the local ingredients and culinary traditions. As we ate, we discussed the morning's explorations and our growing appreciation for the unique culture of Shirakawa-go. The simple meal felt like a warm embrace, grounding us in the present moment and connecting us to the history of the region. The staff were incredibly friendly, making our lunch even more enjoyable. It reminded me of the warm hospitality we strive to offer at our own restaurant in Montreal.

After lunch, we decided to indulge in a little retail therapy at Ichihi. This charming shop offered a variety of local crafts and delicacies, perfect for souvenirs and gifts. Nang found a beautiful hand-painted fan, while I picked up some local sake to enjoy back at our ryokan. We also sampled some of the local sweets, which were a delightful treat. It was fun to browse the shelves, discovering unique treasures that captured the essence of Shirakawa-go. Shops like Ichihi are vital in preserving and promoting local craftsmanship, and I was happy to support the local economy. It also reminded me that I needed to get an adapter, as I forgot mine at home! I will need it for charging my camera.

Our final destination for the day was the Hida Takayama Museum of Art. Although it required a bit of a drive from Shirakawa-go, I was eager to experience its collection of European Art Nouveau glassware, furniture, and objects. The museum was a delightful surprise, showcasing delicate vases and paste jewelry by renowned artists such as Tiffany, Lalique, and Gallé. I was particularly impressed by the Lalique fountain, a stunning piece that once adorned the Champs-Élysées in Paris. Nang, who has a keen eye for design, was captivated by the Charles Rennie Mackintosh exhibit, which included furniture and decorative arts. The museum offered a fascinating contrast to the traditional Japanese art we had seen earlier in the trip, highlighting the interconnectedness of global artistic movements. The building itself was also impressive, with a tearoom in the style of Charles Rennie Mackintosh. It was a truly inspiring experience, reminding me of the power of art to transcend cultural boundaries.

For dinner, we decided to try Tenshukaku, a restaurant offering panoramic views of Shirakawa-go. While the food was good, the real highlight was the breathtaking scenery. From our vantage point, we could see the gassho-zukuri farmhouses nestled amidst the lush greenery, bathed in the warm glow of the setting sun. It was a magical moment, a perfect way to end our day of exploration. As we savored our meal, we reflected on the beauty and tranquility of Shirakawa-go, grateful for the opportunity to experience its unique culture and history.
