A Day of Discovery in Shirakawa-go

Today marked the beginning of our seven-day immersion into the heart of traditional Japan, and what a start it was! Nang and I arrived in Shirakawa-go eager to explore this UNESCO World Heritage site, a place I've long dreamt of visiting. The journey here was smooth, and the anticipation only grew as we approached the village nestled amidst the lush, green mountains. It felt like stepping into a living postcard, a world away from the bustling streets of Montreal.

Our first stop was the Shirakawa-go Gassho-Zukuri Minka-en, an open-air museum showcasing relocated gassho-style farmhouses. Walking through the grounds, I was immediately struck by the ingenuity and craftsmanship of these unique structures. The steep, thatched roofs, designed to withstand heavy snowfall, truly resemble hands clasped in prayer, just as I had read. Each house offered a glimpse into the past, a tangible connection to the families who once lived and worked within these walls.

Wandering through the Minka-en, Nang was particularly fascinated by the intricate details of the farmhouses, pointing out the ingenious methods used to construct the buildings without nails. We explored several of the 25 relocated houses, including a shrine, temples and watermill huts. We even ventured up into the attics, where silkworms were once raised, and admired the tools and implements that spoke of a life deeply connected to the land. It was easy to imagine generations of families working together, their lives dictated by the rhythms of the seasons.

The beauty of Shirakawa-go lies not just in its picturesque scenery, but in its ability to transport you to a simpler time, where tradition and community are paramount.

After immersing ourselves in the architectural wonders of Minka-en, we decided to nourish our bodies as well as our minds. For lunch, we chose Hiiragi, a restaurant known for its Hida beef skewers and traditional dishes. The Hida beef was indeed a treat, tender and flavorful, and Nang thoroughly enjoyed her soba noodles. The friendly staff made us feel incredibly welcome, a testament to the warm hospitality of the region.

With our appetites sated, we ventured to Myozenji Temple, one of the most significant religious sites in Shirakawa-go. Founded in 1748, this Jodo Shinshu temple exudes a sense of peace and history. The distinctive thatched main hall, dating back to 1827, is a testament to the enduring architectural style of the region.

The temple's Shoromon Gate caught my eye immediately with its two-layered structure and high thatched roof. The yew tree planted to commemorate the main hall in 1827 was impressive. Nang and I took a moment to appreciate the serene atmosphere, a welcome respite from the outside world.

Adjacent to the temple, we explored the Myozenji Museum, housed in what was once the head priest's living quarters. This gassho-style house, built in 1817, offered a fascinating glimpse into traditional life in Shirakawa-go. The museum showcased a variety of tools, kitchen utensils, and ornaments, providing a tangible connection to the past.

I was particularly intrigued by the irori fireplace in the center of the living room, imagining families gathering around it for warmth and sustenance. The museum's collection of artifacts offered a deeper understanding of the resourcefulness and resilience of the people who called this village home.

Before calling it a day, we stopped by Sanrakudo, a local shop known for its handcrafted souvenirs and local delicacies. I picked up a few small gifts for Ananda, hoping to share a piece of our journey with him. Nang, of course, found some charming trinkets to remind us of our time here. The shopkeeper was incredibly friendly, sharing stories about the village and its traditions.

For dinner, we decided to try Tenshukaku, a restaurant offering stunning views of the Shirakawa village. While the views were indeed breathtaking, the food was equally impressive. We savored the local flavors, reflecting on the incredible day we had experienced.

As the sun began to set, casting a golden glow over the gassho-style farmhouses, we made our way back to Shirakawago Onyado Yuinosho, our cozy accommodation for the week. The inn blends local charm with modern comfort, the perfect place to unwind after a day of exploration. We are looking forward to what tomorrow brings. Tomorrow, we plan to explore Ogimachi, wander along the Wooden Walkway, and visit the Hatotani Hachiman Shrine. I'm particularly excited to sample the local sake at Shiraogi bar in the evening.

Back in our room, I couldn't help but feel a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience this unique corner of the world. Shirakawa-go had exceeded all my expectations, offering a glimpse into a traditional way of life that is both captivating and inspiring. As I drifted off to sleep, I dreamt of thatched roofs, serene temples, and the warm smiles of the people who call this village home.
