Stepping Back in Time

Today, Nang and I truly immersed ourselves in the heart of traditional Japan. From exploring the iconic gassho-zukuri farmhouses to experiencing the peaceful ambiance of local shrines, every moment felt like stepping back in time. The charm of Shirakawa-go is undeniable, and I'm excited to share our adventures with you.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Yamamotoya. The soba noodles were the perfect way to start the day. The restaurant had an authentic feel, and fueled us up for a day of exploring. It's amazing how a simple bowl of noodles can be so satisfying, especially when you know it's made with such care and tradition. I am always grateful for good food and good company, and this morning was a perfect start to the day.

After breakfast, we set out to explore Ogimachi, the largest village in Shirakawa-go. The gassho-zukuri houses were truly a sight to behold. Their unique architectural style, designed to withstand the heavy snowfall of the region, is a testament to the ingenuity and resilience of the local people. Walking through the village, I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe at the history and culture that has been preserved here.

Nang and I wandered along the Wooden Walkway, a serene path that offers stunning views of the surrounding landscapes. The lush greenery and the quaint farmhouses created a picturesque scene that was perfect for photography. I took several shots, trying to capture the essence of this tranquil place. It's moments like these that remind me why I love to travel – to witness the beauty of nature and the harmony of human existence.

The beauty of Shirakawa-go lies not just in its picturesque landscapes, but in the enduring spirit of its people and the preservation of their traditions.

Our next stop was Hatotani Hachiman Shrine , a peaceful sanctuary nestled among towering cedar trees. The shrine exuded a sense of calm and reverence. We took our time to explore the grounds, admiring the traditional architecture and soaking in the peaceful atmosphere. I lit a candle and offered a prayer for continued health and happiness for my family, a small gesture of gratitude for all the blessings in my life.

For lunch, we indulged in a delightful meal at Shiawaseya Kichibei. I decided to try their fried chicken, while Nang opted for a traditional fried menu. The food was simple but delicious, and the setting was charming and authentic. It was a perfect midday treat, and we enjoyed every bite while taking in the views of the gassho-zukuri houses around us. We were lucky to get a table because it was quite busy.

As the afternoon wore on, we decided to visit Shiraogi for a refreshing drink. This charming spot is known for its traditional teishoku meals and locally sourced ingredients. Sipping on a local brew, I reflected on the day's adventures and felt a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience this unique and special place.

Finally, for dinner, we chose Masuzono Bunsuke. This restaurant is renowned for its fresh river fish dishes, and I was eager to try their specialties. The chef personally catches the fish from the pond right after receiving the order, ensuring the utmost freshness. I opted for the Masuen set menu, which included grilled salted char, rainbow trout sashimi, and fried masu trout – a true culinary delight. Nang chose the Iwana set menu, featuring various dishes made of char, including grilled salted char and char cooked in sweet sauce. The fish was incredibly fresh and flavorful, and the homegrown rice was the perfect accompaniment. It was the perfect way to end our day of exploration and cultural immersion.

The weather today was pleasant, with temperatures hovering around 20°C during the day. However, as evening approached, it cooled down to around 9°C, so we were glad we had our light jackets. There was a chance of rain, as May in Shirakawa-go tends to be rainy, but fortunately, we only experienced a few light drizzles. I had forgotten my umbrella, but luckily, Nang had remembered hers, so we were able to stay dry.

Reflecting on the day, I realized that Shirakawa-go is more than just a picturesque village; it's a living testament to the rich cultural heritage of Japan. The gassho-zukuri houses, the serene shrines, and the warm hospitality of the locals all contribute to its unique charm and appeal. It is a place where you can truly immerse yourself in the traditions of the past while enjoying the beauty of the present.

Tomorrow, we plan to visit Midorigaike Pond and Water Lily Pond. I am looking forward to more tranquil scenery. We will also visit the Jin Homura Art Museum. I am interested in learning about local art. After that, we will have lunch at Soba Wakimoto and dinner at Nomura. I am excited to discover more culinary delights!

As I sit here writing this blog, I can't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to share these experiences with you. I hope that my words and photos have inspired you to add Shirakawa-go to your travel bucket list. It's a destination that will stay with you long after you've left, a reminder of the beauty and tranquility that can be found in the most unexpected places.
