Family Adventure in Nakhon Ratchasima
Day 7: A Day of Leisure and Local Flavors in Nakhon Ratchasima
Exploring local life in Nakhon Ratchasima: From serene parks to vibrant markets and delightful Thai cuisine with family.
Saturday Serenity in Korat
Today was all about embracing the local charm of Nakhon Ratchasima, or Korat as the locals affectionately call it. It's day seven of our family adventure, and after a week of settling in, we were ready to explore beyond the usual tourist spots. Our goal was simple: immerse ourselves in the daily life of the city, savor authentic Thai flavors, and create some unforgettable memories with Nang and Ananda.
Our day started with a hearty breakfast at Tiger is coming beer and eatery. It might seem unusual to start the day at a place known for its evening vibe, but I had read great things about their breakfast menu, a mix of Thai and international options. I opted for a classic Thai breakfast of Jok (rice porridge) with all the trimmings, while Nang enjoyed some American-style pancakes. Ananda, ever the adventurous one, tried a local noodle soup he had never tried before. The atmosphere was relaxed, and it was a great way to fuel up for the day ahead.

Sometimes, the best travel experiences come from simply slowing down and appreciating the everyday moments.
After breakfast, we decided to visit Lam Takhong Village. It's a little outside the main city, but I was told it was worth the visit. What awaited us was a vibrant open marketplace. The marketplace was spotlessly clean. We wandered through the stalls, sampling various local delicacies. I couldn't resist trying the salted fish and a spicy seafood salad. Nang picked up some local handicrafts as souvenirs, and Ananda found a cool t-shirt with a Thai design. The energy of the market was infectious, and it was a great way to experience the local culture.

It was getting close to lunchtime so we headed to THE GOLD LEAF, CHINESE RESTAURANT. I have always enjoyed Chinese food, and I was curious to see how it compared to the Chinese restaurants we frequent in Montreal. The restaurant was elegant, and the service was impeccable. We ordered a variety of dishes, from Peking duck to dim sum, and each one was expertly prepared. Nang, who is a fantastic cook herself, was particularly impressed with the delicate flavors and the quality of the ingredients. Ananda, of course, enjoyed the noodles and dumplings the most. It was a delightful meal that left us feeling satisfied and ready for more exploring.

With our bellies full, we made our way to Bung Ta Lua Park. I had read that it was a beautiful green space in the heart of the city, perfect for a leisurely afternoon. As we entered the park, we were greeted by lush gardens, tranquil ponds, and well-maintained walking paths. It was a welcome escape from the hustle and bustle of the city. We strolled along the paths, enjoying the scenery and the fresh air. Ananda rented a bicycle and explored the park on two wheels, while Nang and I found a quiet bench to sit and people-watch. The park was filled with locals enjoying their Saturday afternoon – families picnicking, couples walking hand-in-hand, and children playing games. It was a heartwarming scene that reminded me of the simple joys of life.

Before heading back to the hotel, we decided to do some shopping at Wonder Planet เดอะมอลล์โคราช. Nang needed to pick up a few things she had forgotten to pack, and Ananda was eager to check out the latest electronics. The mall was bustling with activity, and we spent a couple of hours browsing the shops. I even managed to find a new lens for my camera, which I was quite excited about. It was a successful shopping trip, and we left with our bags full of goodies.

As the sun began to set, we made our way to Kaibarn ร้านไก่ล๊าบ้าน cocktail bar for dinner. I had heard that it was a great place to experience the local nightlife, and I was eager to try some authentic Thai street food. The restaurant was lively and vibrant, with music playing and people chatting and laughing. We ordered a variety of dishes, from Pad Thai to green curry, and each one was bursting with flavor. The spices were bold, and the ingredients were fresh. It was a culinary adventure that we all thoroughly enjoyed. Ananda even tried a spicy chili dish, much to our amusement. The evening ended with some delicious Thai desserts and a few refreshing cocktails.

Tonight, as I sit here writing this blog post, I am filled with a sense of gratitude. Today was a reminder of the simple joys of life – spending time with family, exploring new places, and savoring delicious food. Nakhon Ratchasima has a way of making you feel at home, and I am so grateful for the opportunity to experience its local charm. I am also glad that I remembered to pack my camera. I almost forgot it, and that would have been a disaster. It's essential for capturing these memories. I did forget a power adapter, though, which made charging my devices a bit of a challenge.
Tomorrow, we’re planning to visit Farm Chokchai and the Korat Fossil Museum. I’m particularly excited about the museum; as someone interested in history, I think it will be fascinating. Should be a great day!
Until then, sawasdee krub!
