Roaring Adventures and Golden Temples

Today marked the fourth day of our family adventure in Nakhon Ratchasima, and it was a delightful mix of wildlife encounters and spiritual reflection. It's amazing how much a change of scenery can refresh the soul, especially when shared with loved ones. This trip is not just a vacation; it's a chance to reconnect with my Thai roots and share them with my family.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at 8 Bistro. I opted for a classic Thai coffee to start the day, while Nang enjoyed some fresh fruit. Ananda, ever the adventurous one, went for the pork salad. Fuelled up, we set off for the Nakhon Ratchasima Zoo.

The Nakhon Ratchasima Zoo, also known as Korat Zoo, is quite expansive, covering over 500 rai. We decided to rent a golf cart to navigate the grounds, a wise decision considering the size and the October heat. The zoo is well-maintained, and it was heartening to see the animals in spacious enclosures. We spent hours wandering through the different zones, from the African Zone with its majestic elephants and giraffes to the Predator Kingdom, home to lions and tigers.

Ananda was particularly thrilled by the tiger feeding show, watching the big cats leap for their prey. Nang, ever the compassionate one, was captivated by the adorable rabbits and miniature horses in the Mini Zoo. I enjoyed observing the diverse bird species in the parrot garden. The zoo also has a water park, which looked incredibly inviting, but we decided to save that for another visit. Perhaps when we return, I'll remember to pack our swimwear, unlike this time.

Travel is about the gorgeous feeling of teetering in the unknown.

After our wildlife adventure, we were ready for lunch. We headed to muaysom vietnam restaurant, a local Vietnamese restaurant. The restaurant had a charming ambiance, blending Vietnamese decor with modern touches. We ordered a variety of dishes, including aromatic pho and fresh spring rolls. Each dish was bursting with flavor, and it was a delightful change of pace from the usual Thai cuisine. It reminded me of the diverse culinary scene in Montreal, where we often explore different cuisines.

With our bellies full, we ventured to Wat Sala Thong in the afternoon.

This temple, located a little southeast of the city, is a serene and beautiful place of worship. As we approached, the temple exuded a sense of tranquility. The temple has a large pagoda built over a smaller one, which houses relics of Buddha brought from Chiang Tung in Myanmar. The temple's ordination hall has been renovated recently and houses a stunning golden Buddha image. The temple’s interior has paintings and murals showing angels, stories from the Jataka, and doors and windows that are gilded and lacquered.

Nang was particularly moved by the temple's peaceful atmosphere, while Ananda was fascinated by the intricate details of the architecture. I found myself reflecting on the importance of preserving our cultural heritage and sharing it with future generations. Wat Sala Thong provided a calming contrast to the lively zoo, offering a moment of introspection and spiritual connection.

As evening approached, we decided to try out Wild Cafe and Restaurant for dinner.

This restaurant is known for its Italian and modern French cuisine, a blend that piqued our interest. The restaurant had a rustic charm with contemporary elegance. I opted for a perfectly cooked steak, while Nang enjoyed a delicate French pastry. Ananda, of course, chose the pasta, a familiar favorite. The food was delicious, and the atmosphere was perfect for a relaxed family dinner.

After dinner, while Nang and Ananda headed back to the Leosor Hotel,

I decided to explore the local nightlife. I ventured to Yolo bar korat,

a popular spot known for its lively atmosphere and live music. The bar was buzzing with energy, and I enjoyed a refreshing Thai beer while listening to the music. It was a great way to unwind after a day of exploration, and I even struck up a conversation with some locals, sharing stories and laughter. The bar has a mix of modern and Thai decor, which creates a unique atmosphere. Apparently, it is a popular spot for the younger crowd.

Before heading back, I made a mental note to check out Central Korat tomorrow, as it is in tomorrow's itinerary and Nang wanted to get some shopping done. Also on the list are the Skydeck Tower and Suan Rak Park, which Ananda is quite excited about. I am looking forward to Tapestry Chinese Restaurant for breakfast.

Today was a reminder of why I love traveling – the opportunity to experience new things, connect with different cultures, and create lasting memories with my family. As I reflect on our adventures today, I am filled with gratitude for this opportunity to share my heritage with my loved ones. It's days like these that make all the planning and preparation worthwhile. And who knows what tomorrow will bring? That’s the beauty of travel, isn’t it? The unexpected joys and discoveries that await around every corner. As we continue our journey through Nakhon Ratchasima, I am excited to see what other treasures this vibrant city holds.

Until tomorrow, safe travels!
