Lost in the Emerald Embrace of Cheow Lan Lake

Today was nothing short of magical. Imagine waking up to the symphony of the rainforest, the air thick with the promise of adventure. It was a day dedicated to exploring the heart of Khao Sok – the breathtaking Cheow Lan Lake. I've always believed that travel is about creating memories, and today, with my family by my side, we created a tapestry of moments I know we'll cherish forever.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Bamboo Bistro Khaosok. This charming spot was just what we needed to fuel up for the day ahead. I opted for a classic Thai breakfast of Jok (rice porridge) while Greta enjoyed some pancakes, and Lila devoured a mango sticky rice – a unanimous family favorite! The bistro had a relaxed vibe, perfect for easing into the day. We even grabbed some iced coffees for the road, knowing we'd need the extra kick for our lake adventure.

With our appetites satisfied, we set off towards Cheow Lan Lake. The drive itself was stunning, the landscape transforming into towering limestone cliffs draped in emerald green foliage. Arriving at the pier, the sheer scale of the lake was awe-inspiring. It felt like stepping into another world, a realm of tranquility and natural beauty. We boarded a traditional longtail boat, excited to navigate the serene waters.

As we cruised along, the iconic Three Rock Landmark came into view, a sight that truly took my breath away. The towering limestone formations jutted out of the water, creating a dramatic and picturesque scene. Lila was particularly fascinated, pointing out the shapes she could see in the rocks – a sleeping dragon, a giant's face, her imagination running wild. The air was fresh and clean, carrying the scent of the surrounding jungle. It was moments like these that reminded me why I started this blog – to share the beauty of our world with others.

The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes.

Our next stop was the Khao Sok Floating Bungalows, a unique experience I had been eagerly anticipating. These simple yet charming bungalows offered an unparalleled connection to nature. The idea of spending the night on the water, surrounded by the sounds of the rainforest, was incredibly appealing. After settling into our bungalow, it was time for lunch at the floating restaurant. The food was delicious, a feast of authentic Thai dishes that tantalized our taste buds. We savored every bite, enjoying the stunning views and the gentle rocking of the raft house.

The afternoon was ours to explore. Lila, always eager for a swim, jumped straight into the lake, the cool water a welcome respite from the tropical heat. Greta and I joined her, splashing around and laughing as a family. We then decided to try our hand at kayaking, paddling through the calm waters, marveling at the towering cliffs and the lush greenery that lined the shore. It was a truly immersive experience, a chance to connect with nature on a deeper level. I even tried to spot some wildlife, keeping an eye out for monkeys or colorful birds, but they seemed to be hiding away today.

As the sun began to dip below the horizon, we made our way back to the mainland, the sky ablaze with hues of orange and pink. The longtail boat ride back was magical, the lake transformed into a shimmering expanse of gold. We arrived in Khao Sok village, tired but exhilarated, our hearts full of unforgettable memories.

For dinner, we decided to try Khao Sok Rasta Thailand, a restaurant known for its laid-back atmosphere and delicious food. The restaurant had a cool, reggae vibe, with vibrant colors and quirky decor. The menu offered a mix of Thai and Western dishes, with plenty of vegetarian options for Greta. I opted for a spicy green curry, while Greta enjoyed a flavorful Pad Thai, and Lila chose a simple pizza. The food was delicious, the portions generous, and the prices reasonable. The owner was incredibly friendly, making us feel right at home. As we ate, we listened to reggae music and watched a small fire show put on by one of the staff – a perfect end to a perfect day.

Before heading back to our accommodation, we stopped by Bamboo Bistro Khaosok again, this time for a nightcap. We sat on the terrace, sipping on local beers and reminiscing about our day on the lake. The atmosphere was lively, with fellow travelers sharing stories and laughter. It was a great way to unwind and soak in the energy of Khao Sok village. I even managed to practice my German with a couple from Berlin, a welcome opportunity to keep my language skills sharp.

Looking ahead to tomorrow, we're planning to explore the Ton Kloi Waterfall Trail and visit the Krai Sorn Viewpoint. I'm particularly excited about the waterfall, as I've heard it's a beautiful spot for a refreshing dip. We'll also be trying out some new restaurants, including Thai Herb Restaurant for breakfast, Our Jungle Restaurant & Bar for lunch, and Khao Sok Italian Thai Bistro (Saythip) for dinner. And of course, no trip is complete without a little shopping, so we'll be stopping by Yai-Pin local shop to pick up some souvenirs.

Today was a reminder of the simple joys of life – spending time with family, exploring new places, and immersing ourselves in different cultures. Khao Sok National Park has truly captured our hearts, and I can't wait to see what adventures tomorrow brings. This trip is not just a vacation; it's an opportunity to connect with my family, to learn about a new culture, and to share my experiences with all of you. And as I drift off to sleep tonight, I'm filled with gratitude for this incredible journey.

I am also grateful I remembered to pack the rain jackets, as September in Khao Sok can bring unexpected showers. However, I am kicking myself for forgetting the portable phone charger and binoculars! I really wanted to spot some wildlife, but I guess I will have to rely on my own eyes for now.

It's funny, before moving to Berlin, I couldn't imagine living anywhere other than Thailand. But Berlin has become my second home, and it's experiences like these that remind me how much I love exploring new cultures and sharing them with my family. This trip to Khao Sok is a perfect blend of adventure and relaxation, and I'm so grateful to be able to share it with Greta and Lila. It's moments like these that make all the hard work of teaching English worth it, knowing that I can provide my family with unforgettable experiences.

Until tomorrow, sawasdee krap!
