Whispers of the Past, Rhythms of the Present

Today was a day of remarkable contrasts, a journey through time that resonated deeply with my soul. From the ancient ruins of My Son Sanctuary to the dazzling spectacle of Hoi An Memories Land, I experienced the many layers of Vietnamese history and culture. It was a day filled with reflection, wonder, and a profound appreciation for the enduring spirit of this land.

Our day began with an early start, fueled by a delightful breakfast at Le Petit Bistro Hoi An. The charming French-inspired café offered a perfect blend of familiar comforts and local flavors. While I couldn't find a specific breakfast menu, the ambiance and the promise of a good coffee were enough to set us off on the right foot. I opted for a simple pastry and a strong Vietnamese coffee, a combination that always seems to invigorate me.

With our appetites sated, we set off for My Son Sanctuary, a UNESCO World Heritage site about an hour's drive from Hoi An. The sanctuary is a cluster of partially ruined Hindu temples constructed between the 4th and 13th centuries by the Kings of Champa. As a librarian specializing in Southeast Asian history, I had read extensively about My Son, but nothing could have prepared me for the experience of standing amidst these ancient ruins. The red brick temples, though weathered by time and war, stood as testaments to the rich cultural and spiritual heritage of the Cham people. I felt a deep sense of connection to the past, imagining the ceremonies and rituals that once took place within these sacred walls.

Wandering through the complex, I was struck by the intricate carvings and the architectural ingenuity of the Cham builders. Despite the damage inflicted by time and conflict, the site retained a palpable sense of grandeur and mystery. It was easy to see why My Son is often compared to other great archaeological sites in Southeast Asia, such as Angkor Wat in Cambodia and Borobudur in Indonesia. The air was thick with history, and I found myself lost in contemplation, reflecting on the rise and fall of civilizations, the enduring power of faith, and the importance of preserving our cultural heritage.

The past is never dead. It's not even past.

After spending several hours exploring My Son, we headed back to Hoi An for lunch at Tra Que Water Wheel Restaurant & Cooking Classes. This was an experience I had been particularly looking forward to, as it offered a chance to immerse ourselves in the local culinary traditions. The restaurant is located in Tra Que Vegetable Village, a lush, green oasis just a short distance from the town center. We began with a guided tour of the organic herb gardens, where we learned about the various herbs and vegetables used in Vietnamese cooking. We even had a chance to try our hand at planting and harvesting, which was both fun and educational. It reminded me of my own small garden back in Dresden, though I must admit, the climate here is far more conducive to growing herbs!

Following the garden tour, we participated in a cooking class, where we learned to prepare several traditional Vietnamese dishes, including tam huu (pork and prawn spring rolls) and crispy banh xeo (Vietnamese pancakes). The hands-on nature of the class, combined with the serene garden setting, made for a truly memorable experience. Our instructor was patient and knowledgeable, guiding us through each step of the process with good humor and encouragement. And of course, the best part was enjoying the delicious meal we had prepared, savoring the fresh, vibrant flavors of Vietnamese cuisine.

In the late afternoon, we made our way to Hoi An Memories Land, a cultural theme park that showcases the history and traditions of Hoi An through a series of live performances and exhibits. I must admit, I was initially a bit skeptical, as theme parks are not typically my cup of tea. However, I was pleasantly surprised by the quality and artistry of the performances. The highlight of the park is the Hoi An Memories Show, a large-scale outdoor spectacle that tells the story of Hoi An's transformation from a small village to a bustling international trading port. The show features over 500 performers, elaborate costumes, and stunning visual effects, creating a truly immersive and captivating experience.

The show was divided into five acts, each representing a different period in Hoi An's history. From the early days of rice farming and silk weaving to the arrival of foreign traders and the rise of the town as a major commercial center, the performance brought the past to life in a vivid and engaging way. The music, dance, and theatrical storytelling were all beautifully executed, and I found myself completely absorbed in the narrative. It was a powerful reminder of the importance of preserving our cultural heritage and sharing it with future generations.

After the show, we strolled through the park, exploring the various exhibits and attractions. We visited a traditional Vietnamese village, where we watched artisans crafting lanterns and pottery. We wandered through a Japanese village, where we participated in a tea ceremony and learned about the history of Japanese influence in Hoi An. And we explored a Chinese village, where we admired the intricate architecture and learned about the traditions of Chinese merchants who once traded in the town. It was a fascinating glimpse into the diverse cultural influences that have shaped Hoi An over the centuries.

As the day drew to a close, we headed to Madam Kieu Vietnamese Restaurant for dinner. Located near the Thu Bon River, the restaurant offered a charming setting and a menu of traditional Vietnamese dishes. I opted for the bò cuộn sả (beef skewer dish), which was recommended by several reviewers. The flavors were exquisite, and the presentation was elegant. It was the perfect way to end a day of cultural exploration and culinary delights.

Finally, we capped off the evening with a visit to Sky bar Hoi An (rastabar). While I couldn't find much specific information about this particular bar, the idea of enjoying a drink with a view of the city was too tempting to resist. We relaxed with a cocktail, reflecting on the day's adventures and soaking in the vibrant atmosphere of Hoi An at night. The warm April air, the twinkling lights, and the sounds of the city created a magical ambiance.

Tomorrow, we're planning a trip to the Cham Islands, a group of pristine islands off the coast of Hoi An. I'm looking forward to exploring the beaches, snorkeling in the coral reefs, and immersing ourselves in the natural beauty of this region. But for now, I'm content to savor the memories of today, a day of contrasts, a journey through time, and a celebration of the enduring spirit of Hoi An. I must remember to buy a portable phone charger and reusable water bottle before we leave for Cham Island tomorrow!
