A Day of Sun, Sea, and Serenity

Today, I embarked on a remarkable journey that whisked me away from the charming streets of Hoi An to the breathtaking beauty of the Cham Islands. It was a day filled with vibrant marine life, historical insights, and the kind of tranquility that only an island escape can offer. I’m so excited to share every detail of this adventure!

The day began with a delightful breakfast at Mr. Sơn Restaurant. The restaurant was bustling with locals and tourists. The aroma of Vietnamese herbs and spices filled the air, and I savored every bite of my *pho*, feeling energized for the day ahead. It's always a joy to start the day with a meal that feels so authentic.

With my friends in tow, we made our way to Cua Dai pier, where a speedboat was waiting to whisk us away to the Cham Islands. The ride itself was an adventure, the wind whipping through our hair as we sped across the waves. The anticipation was palpable as the islands came into view, their lush green hills rising majestically from the turquoise waters. The weather was lovely, with only light passing clouds, making it ideal for our island exploration.

Our first stop was Bai Lang, where we immersed ourselves in the local culture. We visited the Marine Museum of Cu Lao Cham, which offered a fascinating glimpse into the islands' diverse ecosystem. As a librarian, I always appreciate the opportunity to learn about local history and culture, and this museum was a treasure trove of information. We then explored the Cham Ancient Well, a centuries-old water source that continues to serve the community. Its history was palpable, and I was struck by the ingenuity of those who came before us.

Next on our itinerary was the Hai Tang Pagoda, a serene sanctuary that exudes peace and tranquility. The intricate architecture and the scent of incense created a calming atmosphere, inviting reflection and contemplation. It was interesting to learn that ancient mariners used to worship at the pagoda before setting off on their voyages. We completed our cultural immersion with a visit to the Tan Hiep Market, a bustling hub of local commerce. Here, we found an array of fresh seafood, local handicrafts, and souvenirs. The vibrant colors and lively atmosphere were a feast for the senses.

To truly appreciate a place, one must immerse oneself in its natural beauty, understand its history, and connect with its people.

After our cultural exploration, it was time for some aquatic adventures. We headed to Bai Xep, known as one of the best spots for snorkeling in the Cham Islands Marine Park. As I slipped into the crystal-clear waters, I was immediately greeted by a kaleidoscope of marine life. Colorful fish darted among the coral reefs, creating a mesmerizing underwater ballet. The warm water and gentle currents made it easy to explore this underwater paradise. I was particularly thrilled to spot a variety of coral formations, each more intricate and beautiful than the last. It was a truly unforgettable experience.

Following our snorkeling adventure, we made our way to Hội An Riverside Restaurant for a delightful lunch. The restaurant's location by the river offered a scenic backdrop as we savored traditional Vietnamese dishes. The fresh spring rolls were a particular highlight, bursting with flavor and perfectly complemented by the tangy dipping sauce. I can highly recommend the *Cao Lau* and the grilled Cham Island calamari, I think it was the best I have ever had. As we dined, we watched the colorful boats glide along the river, transporting tourists to the Ancient Town. The gentle breeze and the lively atmosphere created a perfect setting for a leisurely lunch.

In the afternoon, we returned to Hoi An and I stopped by Hart Hoi An - Upcycled Home Decor. What a gem! As someone who values sustainability and cultural preservation, I was immediately drawn to the store's mission of breathing new life into exquisite handicraft treasures from Ethnic Tribes in Vietnam. The store itself is housed in a century-old heritage house, exuding charm and character. Inside, I found a stunning collection of upcycled and handmade items, from kimonos to woven products to ceramics. Each piece told a story, reflecting the artistic finesse of Vietnam's ethnic minority groups. I purchased a beautiful indigo-colored woven tapestry, a piece that I know will serve as a reminder of my time in Hoi An and the importance of preserving cultural heritage. I was also happy to support a local business that is committed to sustainability and ethical practices.

For dinner, we ventured to Like Quán, a restaurant recommended by a local friend. This hidden gem offered a more intimate dining experience, with a menu featuring authentic Vietnamese cuisine. The restaurant's cozy ambiance and friendly staff made us feel right at home. We savored every bite of our meal, sharing stories and laughter as we reflected on the day's adventures.

As the day drew to a close, I couldn't help but feel a sense of gratitude for the experiences I had. The Cham Islands had exceeded all my expectations, offering a perfect blend of natural beauty, cultural immersion, and relaxation. It was a day that I will cherish for years to come.

Tomorrow, I am looking forward to explore the Hoi An Night Market and the An Bang Beach. A perfect end to a perfect trip with my friends!

Before I turn in for the night, I wanted to mention that I was successful in resisting the urge to buy another lantern today! Lara would be so proud. I am determined to bring home only what I can reasonably carry, though it's getting harder and harder with each passing day. Good night from Hoi An!

I am also happy that I remembered my passport, travel insurance, comfortable walking shoes, sun hat, sunscreen, camera, notebook for journaling, and traditional Khmer outfits for cultural exchange. I was, however, kicking myself for forgetting my portable phone charger and reusable water bottle. I will definitely make sure to have them on hand for our adventures tomorrow!
