A Day of Light and Learning

Today in Hoi An felt like stepping deeper into the heart of Vietnamese culture. It was a day filled with creativity, history, and of course, delightful food. From crafting my own lantern to exploring the nuances of local traditions, every moment was a vibrant thread in the rich tapestry of this ancient town. I am so excited to share all the details!

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Firefly Hoi An | Restaurant & Bar. The open and airy atmosphere was the perfect setting to enjoy some local delicacies. I opted for the chef's noodles, and they were indeed terrific. The mix of flavors was a wonderful start to what promised to be a day of exploration and creativity. My friends and I sat among the beautiful and colorful lanterns, enjoying the gentle morning breeze. It was a delightful way to fuel up before diving into our activities.

Next on the agenda was the Lantern Making Class With Lynn. This was an experience I had eagerly anticipated, and it did not disappoint. Lynn welcomed us into her family's workshop, where lantern-making has been a tradition for generations. She patiently guided us through each step, from bending the bamboo frame to selecting the perfect silk fabric. It was fascinating to learn about the history and cultural significance of lanterns in Hoi An. As someone who appreciates the preservation of cultural traditions, I found this class incredibly enriching. Hans would have loved this class as well, he always appreciates fine craftsmanship.

The act of creating something beautiful with your own hands, while learning about its cultural significance, is an experience that nourishes the soul.

The process of crafting my own lantern was both challenging and rewarding. Cutting, bending, and gluing the bamboo pieces required patience and precision. Choosing the fabric was a delightful dilemma, as there were so many beautiful colors and patterns to choose from. With Lynn's expert guidance, I finally completed my lantern – a unique souvenir that I made myself. I opted for a rich, dark blue silk, reminiscent of the evening sky over the Mekong, a color that always reminds me of home and my childhood in Battambang.

After the lantern-making class, we ventured to the Museum of Folk Culture. Located in a beautifully preserved old house, the museum offered a fascinating glimpse into the daily life and cultural heritage of the local people. The exhibits showcased a wide range of artifacts, from traditional costumes and tools to religious objects and works of art. I was particularly intrigued by the displays on traditional crafts, such as silk weaving and pottery. As a librarian specializing in Southeast Asian history and culture, I found the museum to be a treasure trove of information and insights.

The Museum of Folk Culture is housed in the largest ancient house in the Ancient Urban, stretching an impressive 57 meters in length and 9 meters in width. Spread across two floors with wooden flooring, the museum straddles both Nguyen Thai Hoc and Bach Dang streets. Inside, I discovered a collection of over 480 artifacts, thoughtfully organized into four main themes: folk visual art, folk performing arts, traditional villages, and traditional folk activities. Each exhibit provided a window into the soul of Hoi An, highlighting the creativity and resilience of its people.

One exhibit that particularly caught my eye was the display of folk visual art. The intricate sculptures and carvings on wood, the delicate porcelain reliefs, and the bronze worshiping statues all showcased the remarkable skill of local artisans. These works, often found in homes and religious sites, contribute to the unique beauty of Hoi An's heritage. It was inspiring to see how these traditional art forms have been passed down through generations, preserving the cultural identity of the town.

Another fascinating aspect of the museum was the presentation of folk performing arts. I learned about Bai Choi, a traditional form of Vietnamese bingo, and Thien Cau dance, a unique mascot dance that has been a part of Hoi An's cultural landscape for centuries. These performances play an important role in community activities and spiritual life, bringing people together in celebration and reverence. I made a note to try and catch a performance of Thien Cau dance during my stay; it sounds like a truly captivating experience. I also found out that the museum arranges some exciting performances of Hoi An folklore on the first floor of the museum.

The exhibits on traditional villages offered a glimpse into the daily lives of Hoi An's residents. From the bustling trade activities to the intricate processes of traditional medicine, each display told a story of ingenuity and resourcefulness. I was particularly drawn to the section on Thanh Ha Pottery Village, the only surviving pottery-making village in the area. The displays showcased the exquisite craftsmanship of the local potters, whose skills have been honed over generations. I felt a sense of connection to these artisans, whose dedication to their craft mirrors my own passion for preserving cultural heritage.

After immersing ourselves in the museum's treasures, it was time for lunch. We headed to Red Dragon Restaurant and Cooking Class, where we indulged in a delightful meal. The restaurant is known for its creative and sophisticated menu, based on classic Hoi An dishes. I thoroughly enjoyed the fresh, local ingredients and the chef's expertise in blending flavors. It was interesting to learn that Red Dragon is a family-run establishment, which adds to its charm and authenticity.

In the afternoon, we strolled through Hoi An Old Town (Shopping Street), taking advantage of the opportunity to do some shopping. The streets were bustling with activity, as locals and tourists alike browsed the many shops and stalls. I was on the lookout for unique souvenirs and gifts to bring back home. I found a lovely silk scarf at A Dong Silk, a well-known tailor shop with a wide selection of fabrics. The colors and patterns were simply exquisite, and I knew it would make a perfect gift for my daughter, Lara. The shop assistant was very helpful and courteous, and I appreciated the personalized service.

As I wandered through the town, I couldn't resist picking up a few lanterns to bring back to Dresden. The lanterns of Hoi An are truly magical, casting a warm and inviting glow over the streets at night. I envision hanging them in my garden, creating a little piece of Hoi An in my own backyard. Perhaps I'll even try to recreate some of the dishes I've tasted here, sharing the flavors of Vietnam with my friends and family.

We also stopped by Reaching Out Arts & Crafts, a fair-trade shop that supports disabled artisans. I was deeply moved by the beautiful handicrafts on display, each one a testament to the talent and resilience of its creator. I purchased a set of ceramic tea light holders, knowing that my purchase would make a positive impact on the lives of these artisans. It's important to me that my travels contribute to the well-being of the local communities I visit.

For dinner, we chose Vy's Market Restaurant, a unique establishment that emulates the bustling atmosphere of a Vietnamese market. The restaurant features multiple cooking stations, each specializing in a different style of food. It was fascinating to watch the chefs at work, preparing everything from BBQ to sweets. The concept is really cool; it is like a food court, with loads of different food places. I decided on the braised mushroom and eggplant with rice, and it was absolutely delicious. The flavors were rich and complex, and the presentation was beautiful. I also appreciated the fact that Vy's Market uses fresh, locally sourced ingredients.

Hoi An has a way of captivating the senses and nourishing the soul. I am grateful for the opportunity to explore this beautiful town and to learn about its rich history and traditions.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore the Cam Thanh Rice Fields and visit the Tra Que Village House. I am looking forward to immersing myself in the natural beauty of the countryside and learning more about the local agricultural practices. But for now, it's time to rest and recharge, ready for another day of adventure in Hoi An.

Before heading back to the Hai Au Boutique Hotel & Spa, I took a moment to stroll along the Thu Bon River. The reflections of the lanterns in the water created a mesmerizing scene, casting a warm and inviting glow over the town. It was the perfect ending to a perfect day. As I walked, I couldn't help but feel a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience the magic of Hoi An. This town has a way of weaving its spell on you, leaving you with memories that will last a lifetime.
