A Breath of Fresh Air in Hoi An's Countryside

After several days immersed in the bustling streets and vibrant markets of Hoi An, I was eager for a change of pace. Today, I ventured into the serene countryside, a decision that proved to be incredibly rewarding. The day promised a glimpse into the rural heart of Vietnam, a chance to connect with the land and its people, and, of course, to savor some authentic flavors.

The day began with a hearty breakfast at Cao Cao Grasshopper. I must admit, the name was intriguing, and I was curious to see what culinary delights awaited. Thankfully, the menu offered more familiar options, and I opted for a traditional Vietnamese breakfast of *pho*, a fragrant noodle soup that never fails to invigorate. Fuelled up and ready for the day, I met up with my friends, and we set off towards the Cam Thanh Rice Fields.

As we journeyed towards the rice fields, the landscape transformed dramatically. The narrow city streets gave way to open roads flanked by lush greenery. The air grew fresher, carrying the scent of earth and distant blossoms. It was a welcome change from the city's hustle and bustle, and I felt a sense of tranquility wash over me. It reminded me a little bit of the rice paddies back in Battambang, where I grew up, and made me feel closer to home.

Wandering Through the Emerald Carpets of Cam Thanh

The Cam Thanh Rice Fields stretched out before us like an emerald carpet, a testament to the tireless efforts of the local farmers. The rice paddies were a vibrant green, reflecting the sky above, and the air was filled with the sounds of nature. We decided to rent bicycles to explore the area, a choice that allowed us to immerse ourselves fully in the landscape. As we pedaled along the narrow paths that wound through the fields, we were greeted by friendly locals tending to their crops. Their faces were etched with the wisdom of generations, and their smiles were warm and welcoming.

We learned that farming families work these fields year-round, employing traditional methods passed down through generations. I was particularly moved to see special burial areas for farmers from generations past within the fields, highlighting the deep connection between the community and the land. I found myself contemplating the cyclical nature of life, the way these families honored their ancestors by continuing their legacy of cultivating the land.

The earth laughs in flowers.

We also explored the Bay Mau nipa palm mangrove forest in Cam Thanh, a unique wetland area. We clambered into a round basket boat, known locally as a *thúng chài*, and were gently rowed through the tranquil waterways, gliding under the palms. The experience was serene and surreal, a world away from the bustling city we had left behind. Our guide shared stories about the forest, explaining its ecological importance and the role it plays in the local community's livelihood.

An Afternoon of Herbs and Flavors at Tra Que Village

After our morning adventure in the rice fields, we headed to Tra Que Village, renowned for its organic herbs and vegetables. This charming village offered another glimpse into rural Vietnamese life, but with a focus on the culinary traditions of the region. As a librarian with a passion for Southeast Asian culture, I was particularly excited to learn about the unique farming techniques employed by the villagers.

We started with lunch at Tra Que Minty Garden. The restaurant is nestled amidst lush gardens, creating a tranquil and inviting atmosphere. As we sat down, we were greeted with refreshing drinks made from local herbs, a perfect way to cool down after our bike ride. The menu featured a variety of traditional Vietnamese dishes, all made with fresh ingredients sourced directly from the surrounding gardens. I opted for the *cao lầu*, a regional specialty consisting of thick rice noodles, slices of pork, fresh greens, and crispy croutons, all bathed in a flavorful broth. The dish was a symphony of flavors and textures, a true testament to the culinary artistry of the region. My friends and I also shared some spring rolls, and the freshness of the herbs made them incredibly delicious.

After lunch, we took a stroll through the gardens, accompanied by a local farmer who shared his knowledge of the various herbs and vegetables grown in the village. I learned that the farmers use a unique method of fertilization, relying on seaweed harvested from the nearby lagoon. This natural fertilizer enriches the soil and gives the vegetables a distinctive flavor. It was fascinating to see the sustainable practices employed by the villagers, a testament to their deep respect for the environment.

I was particularly intrigued by the various herbs used in Vietnamese cuisine, each with its own unique aroma and flavor profile. From the fragrant mint and basil to the pungent coriander and lemongrass, these herbs play a vital role in creating the complex and nuanced flavors that define Vietnamese cuisine. I made a mental note to try and incorporate some of these herbs into my own cooking back in Dresden, hoping to recreate some of the authentic flavors I had experienced in Hoi An.

Evening Delights and Reflections

As the sun began to set, we made our way back towards Hoi An, our hearts full of the day's experiences. Before heading back to the hotel, we decided to treat ourselves to dinner at An Bang Beach Village Restaurant. The restaurant is located right on the beach, offering stunning views of the ocean. We feasted on fresh seafood, grilled to perfection and seasoned with local spices. The gentle sea breeze, the sound of the waves, and the delicious food created a truly magical atmosphere.

After dinner, we decided to visit Market Bar - Market Terrace for a nightcap. The bar is a hidden gem, offering a relaxed atmosphere and stunning views of the city. As we sipped on our drinks, we reflected on the day's adventures. We had wandered through emerald rice fields, explored lush gardens, and savored authentic flavors. We had connected with the land and its people, and gained a deeper appreciation for the rural heart of Vietnam.

Today was a wonderful reminder of the simple joys of life – fresh air, good food, and the company of friends. It's moments like these that make travel so enriching and memorable. And as I prepare for another day of exploration in Hoi An, I carry with me the lessons and memories of this day in the countryside, a reminder of the beauty and resilience of the Vietnamese people and their deep connection to the land.

It’s funny, when I was younger, I always dreamed of living in a big city. But days like today remind me of the beauty and peace that can be found in the countryside. Maybe one day, Hans and I can find a little house with a garden, a place where Lara can run free and connect with nature. Until then, I’ll cherish these moments and carry them with me wherever I go.

For now, I’m off to bed, dreaming of rice paddies, herb gardens, and the warm smiles of the Vietnamese people. Goodnight from Hoi An!

I am excited for tomorrow, when we will visit Hoi An Handicraft Tours and Thanh Ha Pottery Village, Hoi An. I am looking forward to experiencing the local crafts.
