First Impressions of Kampot
After a long journey from Dresden, with a connecting flight in Phnom Penh and a scenic drive, we finally arrived in Kampot. The air was thick with the scent of the tropics, a familiar fragrance that immediately transported me back to my childhood in Battambang. It’s wonderful to be back in Cambodia, sharing this part of my heritage with Hans and Lara. Today was all about settling in and getting a feel for this charming riverside town.
Our first stop was the Kampot Provincial Museum. Housed in a beautifully restored French colonial building, the museum offered a concise yet insightful overview of Kampot's history. Wandering through the three rooms, we examined artifacts dating back to the pre-Angkorian period, chronicling Kampot’s evolution through the French Protectorate and the tumultuous Khmer Rouge years. I found myself explaining to Lara the significance of certain statues dedicated to Vishnu, recalling stories my grandmother used to tell me. Hans, ever the pragmatist, was fascinated by the oldest known photograph of Kampot, taken in 1886. It was a poignant reminder of how much, and yet how little, has changed.

Leaving the museum, we strolled towards the iconic Durian Roundabout. This quirky landmark, adorned with a giant durian sculpture, is a tribute to Kampot’s status as a major producer of this pungent fruit. Lara wrinkled her nose, declaring the smell “interesting,” while Hans chuckled, snapping a photo for his collection of unusual monuments. For me, the roundabout was more than just a photo opportunity ; it symbolized Kampot’s agricultural roots and its unique character. The Durian Roundabout was established to celebrate Kampot's reputation for producing high-quality durian, often referred to as the “king of fruits” in Southeast Asia. It has become a popular meeting point and a recognizable landmark for visitors, symbolizing the town's charm and character.

Sometimes, the most memorable travel experiences are found in the simplest of moments, like sharing a meal or discovering a quirky landmark together.
By lunchtime, our stomachs were rumbling, so we headed to Aroma House for breakfast. Although it was past noon, we were still on Dresden time! I opted for the Greek Chicken Kebab, savoring the familiar flavors of the Middle East with a Cambodian twist. Hans, ever adventurous, tried the Beef Shawarma Plate, while Lara happily munched on French fries. The food was delicious, and the portions were generous, providing the perfect fuel for our afternoon explorations. The restaurant is located downtown, around the corner from the Durian Circle.

Next on the agenda was a visit to Simple Things for lunch. This vegetarian cafe and yoga studio offered a tranquil vibe and an impressive selection of vegan dishes. I chose a light salad, while Hans enjoyed a hearty pizza. Lara, predictably, went for the pasta.

After lunch, we explored the local shops, eventually finding ourselves at Kampot Souvenirs Kampot Pepper Shop. As a librarian specializing in Southeast Asian history, I was eager to learn more about Kampot pepper, a spice renowned for its unique flavor. The shop was an aromatic haven, filled with the scents of freshly harvested peppercorns. We sampled the different varieties – green, black, red, and white – each with its own distinct flavor profile. I purchased a selection of Kampot pepper and unique Cambodian handicrafts at this aromatic souvenir shop. We bought several small bags as gifts for our friends back in Dresden, along with a few for our own kitchen. The shop is more than just a retail space; it's an aromatic gateway to the heart of Kampot, Cambodia, where the legacy of world-renowned Kampot pepper intertwines with the artistry of local craftsmanship.

As the sun began to set, we made our way to Rikitikitavi Restaurant and Bar for dinner. This charming riverside establishment offered stunning views of the river and the Elephant Mountains. I chose the Tiger Prawns in Kampot Pepper Sauce, eager to savor the local specialty. Hans opted for the Australian Tenderloin Steak, while Lara enjoyed a simple pasta dish. The food was excellent, and the ambiance was perfect, with the gentle sounds of the river providing a soothing backdrop. As we sat there, watching the sky ablaze with color, I felt a deep sense of contentment. It was wonderful to be back in Cambodia, sharing this experience with my family. Tomorrow, we plan to explore Phnom Bokor and Popokvil Waterfall, venturing into the natural beauty that surrounds Kampot. I am excited to see what adventures await us. Before heading back to our guesthouse, we enjoyed a leisurely stroll along the riverfront, soaking in the sights and sounds of Kampot by night. The town was alive with activity, with locals and tourists alike enjoying the cool evening air. As we walked, I couldn't help but feel grateful for this opportunity to reconnect with my roots and share my heritage with my loved ones. I am already looking forward to our adventures tomorrow.
I am also looking forward to sampling the local dishes at The Wooden House, Armando's for breakfast and TIKI GARDEN for dinner. I am also hoping that we can find time to visit The Green Room - Kampot for a nightcap.
