Today was a day of quiet contemplation and natural beauty, a perfect blend of culture and nature that Kampot so generously offers. It’s days like these that remind me why I wanted to share my heritage with Hans and Lara, to let them experience the simple yet profound beauty of Cambodia.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Wiz's Mealie. While I was looking forward to try Khmer cuisine, I learned that Wiz's Mealie is permanently closed. So, we decided to have our breakfast at a local restaurant nearby instead. We had some sandwiches, Khmer noodles, and coffee. It was a simple yet satisfying meal that gave us the energy we needed for the day's adventures. I remember when I first arrived in Germany, how much I missed the flavors of home. Now, being back, I cherish every bite of authentic Khmer food.

Wat Samathi Pagoda: A Spiritual Journey

Our first stop was Wat Samathi Pagoda. As we approached the temple, perched atop a hill, I felt a sense of peace wash over me. The vibrant colors of the pagoda, especially the striking golden roof, shimmered in the sunlight. As we cycled through the countryside, guided by a friendly and knowledgeable student, we visited a lotus farm and a rice mill. The vast fields of paddy were a sight to behold, stretching out like a green carpet under the clear sky. Lara was thrilled to see the butterflies fluttering around the lotus flowers, their delicate wings painted with vibrant colors.

Unfortunately, upon arriving, we found that Ta Eou Restaurant is permanently closed. Instead, we found a small restaurant nearby that served Khmer dishes, and we decided to give it a try. I ordered fish amok, Hans had lok lak, and Lara enjoyed some fried noodles. Each dish was a burst of flavors, a testament to the rich culinary heritage of Cambodia.

As the sun began to set, we made our way to the Temple Outdoor Lounge. This was the perfect spot to unwind after a day of exploration. The lounge offered a relaxing atmosphere with a garden setting, where we could enjoy coffee, food, and beer. Lara was delighted to find an indoor, air-conditioned café, providing a cool respite from the evening heat.

We also plan to visit The Kampot Pepper Shop, where I hope to buy some authentic Kampot pepper to take back home to Dresden [If tomorrow is not the last day of the trip]. I want to share the unique flavors of Kampot with my friends and family, giving them a taste of Cambodia.

As I write this, I feel a sense of gratitude for the experiences we’ve had today. Kampot has a way of touching your soul, of reminding you of the simple joys in life. It’s a place where you can connect with nature, culture, and yourself. And as we continue our journey, I’m excited to see what other wonders this charming town has in store for us.

For dinner, we decided to try L’Osteria in Kampot. While it might seem odd to have Italian food in Cambodia, I had heard great things about this restaurant. It was said to offer a unique dining experience with traditional Italian dishes made with fresh, high-quality ingredients. The cozy atmosphere was perfect for a family dinner.

We ordered a variety of dishes, from classic pasta like spaghetti carbonara to wood-fired pizzas. Lara particularly enjoyed the pizza, while Hans and I savored the pasta. Before heading back to our guesthouse, we took a stroll along the riverfront, enjoying the cool evening breeze. The stars were out, and the atmosphere was peaceful. It was the perfect end to a perfect day.
