Echoes on Bokor Mountain
Today, we embarked on a journey to Bokor Hill Station, a place shrouded in mist and steeped in history. It felt like stepping back in time, wandering through the remnants of French colonial ambition and Cambodian spiritual resilience. The air was thick with the stories of those who came before us, their dreams and struggles etched into the very stones of this mountain.

As we drove towards Bokor National Park, I couldn't help but reflect on my own history and connection to this land. Leaving Cambodia for Germany in my early twenties was a pivotal moment, one filled with both excitement and a deep sense of loss for the culture and family I was leaving behind. Returning now, with Hans and Lara, feels like piecing together fragments of my identity, showing them a part of me that they could only imagine before.
The drive up Bokor Mountain was an experience in itself. The winding roads snaked through lush greenery, offering glimpses of the stunning landscape below. The air grew cooler as we ascended, a welcome change from the humid warmth of Kampot town. Lara was especially excited, her eyes glued to the window as we passed playful monkeys along the roadside.
Our first stop was Bokor Hill Station, a place that truly embodies the rise and fall of French colonial rule in Cambodia. Built in the 1920s as a retreat for the French elite, it stands as a haunting reminder of a bygone era. The main structure, Le Bokor Palace Hotel, once a grand hotel and casino, has been restored and is now open again. Although it's been renovated, it still whispers stories of its past. I tried to imagine the lavish parties and the lives of the French colonists who sought refuge here from the heat.
Wandering through the grounds, we explored the old Catholic Church. The church was built in the early 1920s. Despite its abandoned appearance, it exuded a sense of peace. The interior was spotless, and fresh flowers adorned the altar, a sign that it remains a place of reverence for some. It’s incredible to think that this very church served as one of the last bastions for the Khmer Rouge until they were driven out in 1993. I lit a candle, offering a silent prayer for peace and healing for this land that has seen so much suffering.
Sometimes, the most profound connections are found in the echoes of the past, in the places where history whispers its secrets to those who listen.
Next, we visited Wat Sampov Pram, also known as the Five Boats Pagoda. This temple is not only a spiritual center but also a place of incredible beauty. The name comes from five large rock formations that resemble sailing boats. Legend has it that these rocks are the remains of boats given to Prince Preah Thong and Princess Neang Neak by the Dragon King. It's a beautiful story, one that speaks to the deep connection between the Cambodian people and their land.

As we walked around the temple grounds, I shared the legend with Lara, who was captivated by the tale of the prince and princess. The panoramic views from the temple were breathtaking, stretching across the lush jungles and coastline. I could even see glimpses of Phu Quoc Island in Vietnam on the horizon. It was a moment of profound peace, a chance to connect with my heritage and share it with my family.
For lunch, we decided to try The Pig Pen BBQ. The hearty, comforting food was exactly what we needed after a day of exploring. It was a nice change of pace, and Lara especially enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere.

Back in Kampot town, we decided to try Mexican Food Kampot for dinner. It might seem strange to have Mexican food in Cambodia, but I’d heard great things about it. The reviews didn't lie - the food was delicious and surprisingly authentic. Hans particularly enjoyed the mango margaritas, while Lara devoured the nachos. It was a fun, unexpected culinary experience.

To cap off the evening, we ventured to Rusty Keyhole Two, a local sports bar. It was a lively spot, filled with both tourists and locals. We enjoyed some local beers and soaked in the vibrant atmosphere. It was a great way to unwind and reflect on the day's adventures.

As I sit here now, writing this blog post, I feel a deep sense of gratitude for the experiences we shared today. Sharing this with Hans and Lara has been incredibly meaningful, a way to connect them to a part of my story and to the rich, complex history of Cambodia.
Tomorrow, we plan to explore Kampong Trach Water Cave and the Green Cathedral. I’m excited to see what other hidden gems this region holds and to continue sharing these experiences with my family.
