Day 4: Spiritual Heights and Mythical Bridges: Exploring Mana Village
Trekking to Vasudhara Falls and discovering the legends of Bheem Pul in Mana Village, a day of spiritual and natural wonders.
A Day Among Gods and Legends
Today’s journey was a profound blend of natural beauty and spiritual exploration. Leaving our cozy camp, we ventured deeper into the heart of the Himalayas, a place where myths and mountains intertwine. The air was crisp, carrying whispers of ancient stories, as we set out to discover the wonders surrounding Mana, the last village before the Indo-Tibetan border.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Auli winter camp (Valleyofflower.in), preparing us for the adventures ahead. The simple yet nourishing meal fueled our bodies and spirits, setting a positive tone for the day. With Lara always eager to start the day, and Hans ever the pragmatist making sure we were well equipped, we started our hike. It's moments like these when I feel so grateful for my family's adventurous spirit.
Our first stop was Bheem Pul, Mana, a natural stone bridge steeped in mythology. As we approached, the sound of the Saraswati River grew louder, hinting at the marvel that awaited us. Legend has it that during their journey to heaven, Draupadi, wife of the Pandavas, struggled to cross the raging river. Bheem, known for his immense strength, lifted a massive rock and placed it across the river, creating a bridge for her to cross. Seeing the monolithic structure spanning the river, it’s easy to imagine the strength required to put it there. The sheer size and the precarious balance of the rock were awe-inspiring.

Visiting Bheem Pul is more than just seeing a geological formation; it's stepping into a living myth, where every stone echoes tales of strength, devotion, and ancient journeys.
Standing on Bheem Pul, I felt a deep connection to the past. The rushing waters of the Saraswati, believed to be invisible in most parts of India, added to the mystique of the place. I tried to picture the Pandavas and Draupadi on their arduous journey, their determination driving them forward. The cool spray from the river was refreshing, and the surrounding mountains stood as silent witnesses to centuries of history. We took some time to explore the area, including a small shop nearby that proudly proclaimed itself as the last shop on the Indian border. It was a quirky reminder of how close we were to the edge of the country.
Next on our itinerary was Vasudhara Falls, a trek that promised both physical challenge and spiritual reward. From Mana, the falls were about 6 kilometers away, a journey that would take us through rocky terrain and steep inclines. The trek started from Mana Village, considered the first inhabited village in India, and ascended through landscapes offering stunning views of the Himalayas.

The initial part of the trek was relatively easy, but as we continued, the path became steeper and more demanding. The altitude, over 12,000 feet, added to the challenge, making each step a conscious effort. Yet, the breathtaking views of the Alaknanda River and the snow-capped peaks kept us motivated. Along the way, we passed the Saraswati Temple, a serene spot where we paused to catch our breath and offer a silent prayer.
As we got closer to Vasudhara Falls, the sound of the cascading water grew louder. Finally, we reached the falls, a majestic cascade of water plunging from a height of 400 feet. The sight was simply mesmerizing. The water, enriched with Ayurvedic herbs, is believed to have therapeutic benefits, and it’s said that the water avoids falling on those who are impure of heart. I stood beneath the falls, feeling the icy water splash against my skin, a cleansing and invigorating experience.
According to Hindu mythology, Vasudhara Falls is named after Goddess Vasudhara, associated with wealth and prosperity. It's believed that those who visit with a pure heart are blessed with abundance. Whether or not the legends are true, the spiritual energy of the place was palpable. The falls are also believed to be on the path the Pandavas took to heaven.
Lunch was a simple affair, enjoyed amidst the stunning scenery. We had packed some snacks, and we savored every bite as we sat by the river, soaking in the beauty around us. It was moments like these that reminded me why I loved traveling with friends – sharing experiences and creating memories that would last a lifetime. After lunch, we started our descent back to Mana, our hearts full of awe and gratitude.
Before leaving Mana, we made a stop at Chandan Coffee Centre Maana, a charming little coffee shop known for its cozy atmosphere. I ordered a Masala chai, while Hans opted for their artisanal coffee blend. Lara enjoyed a pastry. The coffee shop was a great meeting point. It was the perfect way to relax and reflect on the day’s adventures. The staff were friendly and welcoming, adding to the warm ambiance of the place.

For dinner, we returned to our camp in Camp valley of flowers Ghanghria, where a hearty meal awaited us. The camp provided a much-needed respite after a long day of trekking and exploration. As the sun set, casting a golden glow over the mountains, we gathered around a bonfire, sharing stories and laughter. The camaraderie among our group was palpable, and I felt a deep sense of contentment.

It's easy to forget the insect repellent and power bank, [as I did] when preparing for a trip like this but remembering to pack a sense of wonder and respect for nature is essential. These are the things that truly enrich the experience and create lasting memories.
And as I always say, travel isn't just about seeing new places, but about discovering new perspectives and connecting with something larger than ourselves. Today, I felt that connection deeply, and I am grateful for the opportunity to share it with you.
Until tomorrow!
