Temples and Tranquility in Chiang Mai

Today was a day of deep reflection and exploration as I immersed myself in the spiritual heart of Chiang Mai. With Lara in tow, and Hans opting for a quieter morning at the Loyy Hotel - Hostel, we set out to discover the ancient temples that dot this culturally rich city. It was a journey that took us through centuries of history, art, and devotion, leaving me with a profound sense of peace and connection to this enchanting place.

Our first stop was Wat Lok Moli, a temple that immediately captivated me with its striking Lanna architecture. As we approached the entrance, the intricate wood carvings and the towering chedi created a sense of awe. I learned that this temple dates back to the 14th century and once housed the ashes of members of the Mengrai Dynasty. The history here is palpable, and I could almost feel the echoes of the past as we walked through the grounds.

The temple's viharn, rebuilt in the early 21st century, was a sight to behold. Its dark walls and multi-tiered roof were classic examples of Lanna design, and the interior was adorned with detailed wooden carvings. Lara was fascinated by the celestial beings, known as Vada figures, flanking the chedi. I found myself drawn to the statue of Queen Chiraprapha, who ruled Lanna in the 16th century, holding a lotus flower – a symbol of purity and enlightenment. The serene atmosphere of Wat Lok Moli made it easy to forget the bustling city outside its walls.

From Wat Lok Moli, we ventured to Wat Jetlin, a temple known as the Temple of the Seven Channels. It's a peaceful retreat famous for its tranquil lotus pond and bamboo bridge. The name comes from the seven water channels where the Lanna Royal Family used to bathe. The lily pond is a beautiful feature, crossed by a charming bamboo bridge. I found a quiet spot by the pond and watched the fish swim, a moment of pure serenity. The temple was established in the early 16th century, and it was the site of the coronation of King Mekut Sutthiwong in 1551. The main building is the prayer hall, showcasing a distinctive Lanna-style tiered roof. The temple has a calm, meditative atmosphere, and it's easy to get lost in thought while wandering the grounds.

The beauty of Chiang Mai lies not only in its stunning landscapes but also in the rich tapestry of its cultural heritage, woven with threads of history, spirituality, and artistry.

Our final temple of the day was Wat Suan Dok, or Flower Garden Temple, a place of immense significance for the local people. Founded in 1370 by King Kue Na, it was built in the center of Wiang Suan Dok, an ancient walled settlement. As we entered, I was struck by the expansive prayer hall and the numerous white reliquaries, which contain the ashes of the Chiang Mai royal family. The main chedi, a large bell-shaped structure, is said to house a relic of the Buddha, making it a sacred site for pilgrims.

I was particularly moved by the story of Maha Sumana Thera, a monk from the Sukhothai Kingdom, who had a vision that a Buddha relic should be housed in Chiang Mai. According to the legend, when the relic was to be placed in the temple, it miraculously duplicated itself. One relic was enshrined in Wat Suan Dok, while the other was carried by a white elephant to Doi Suthep, where Wat Phra That Doi Suthep was built. It's stories like these that make these temples so much more than just historical sites; they are living embodiments of faith and tradition.

After our spiritual explorations, we indulged in some local flavors. For breakfast, we visited Freshtime food and juice, a small restaurant not far from Wat Pra Singh. I enjoyed a freshly made smoothie, while Lara had some Thai beef noodles. It was the perfect way to start our day of temple visits. The atmosphere was cozy and inviting, and the staff were friendly and efficient.

Lunch was at Nun's Restaurant, where we savored authentic Thai dishes. I opted for the Khao Soi, a northern Thai specialty, while Lara tried the green curry. The flavors were rich and aromatic, and the portions were generous. Nun's Restaurant is known for its warm ambiance and traditional decor, which added to the overall experience. It was a delightful culinary journey that complemented our exploration of Chiang Mai's temples.

As the sun began to set, we headed to Elephant Parade, a shop showcasing beautifully decorated elephant statues. I knew that the Elephant Parade was scheduled to be in Chiang Mai until January 6th 2024, so I was happy to see that their shop was still open. Lara was thrilled to see the colorful creations, each one unique and inspiring. I learned that the Elephant Parade is a social enterprise that raises awareness and funds for elephant conservation. It was heartwarming to see art being used for such a noble cause, and Lara and I picked out a small elephant figurine as a memento of our visit. I also found out that there is the Elephant Parade Land, which has a museum and workshops, and is open to the public.

For dinner, we chose Aroy Dee, a restaurant known for its fresh ingredients and flavorful Thai dishes. I ordered the green curry, while Lara had the Pad See Ew noodles. The food was cooked right in front of us, and the aromas filled the air. Aroy Dee is a popular spot among both locals and tourists, and I could see why. The prices were reasonable, and the menu offered a wide variety of options. It was the perfect way to end our day of exploration.

Reflecting on the day, I realized how much I had learned about Chiang Mai's history and culture. The temples were not just places of worship but also repositories of art, architecture, and tradition. Each temple had its own unique story to tell, and I felt privileged to have had the opportunity to listen. Lara, too, seemed to have been deeply moved by our experiences, and I was grateful to be able to share these moments with her.

Tomorrow marks the last day of our family cultural adventure in Chiang Mai, and we plan to make the most of it. Our itinerary includes visits to Tha Phae Gate and Wat Chiang Man, two more iconic landmarks of this beautiful city. I am looking forward to soaking in the last moments of our trip, cherishing the memories we have made, and preparing for our journey back to Dresden. But for now, I will rest and dream of the serene temples and vibrant culture of Chiang Mai.

As I sit here in our room at the Loyy Hotel - Hostel, I am filled with gratitude for this incredible journey. Chiang Mai has captured my heart, and I know that I will carry its spirit with me always. Perhaps, one day, I will return to explore more of its hidden treasures and delve deeper into its rich cultural heritage. Until then, I will cherish the memories of these past few days and share them with others, hoping to inspire them to embark on their own adventures of discovery.
