Chasing Torii Gates and Temple Bells in Kyoto

Today was nothing short of magical, a deep dive into the spiritual heart of Kyoto. I’ve always been drawn to places that whisper stories of the past, and Kyoto certainly doesn’t disappoint. With Liam by my side, we set out early, eager to explore the iconic shrines and temples that make this city so enchanting. It's amazing to think this trip is already on day 3, time flies when you are having fun.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Kyoto cuisine Teramachi Yoshikura. The restaurant was amazing. They specialize in crafting set meals made with fresh fish and seasonal local vegetables. The Obanzai All-You-Can-Eat option was great, and I must have tried at least six or seven kinds of Obanzai that matched well with rice such as pumpkin, taro root, bean curd lees, hijiki seaweed. The restaurant also offered a wide variety of drinks to pair with your food focusing mainly on local sake and shochu but also including wines and whiskeys.

First on our itinerary was the breathtaking Fushimi Inari Taisha. As we approached, the sight of thousands of vermilion torii gates snaking up the mountainside was simply awe-inspiring. The crisp February air nipped at our cheeks, but the vibrant colors and the palpable sense of history kept us warm. I had read that the Hatsuuma Festival was held here earlier this month, commemorating the enshrinement of the god Inari-Okami, and I could still feel the echoes of the solemn atmosphere.

The climb was invigorating, each step revealing a new vista, a new perspective on the seemingly endless path of gates. Liam, ever the supportive partner, kept me motivated as we ascended higher and higher. We even saw people dressed in traditional kimonos, posing for photos amidst the scenic locations. It was like stepping back in time.

Sometimes, the most profound journeys are not about reaching a destination, but about the path we tread and the stories we gather along the way.

Foxes, the messengers of Inari, were everywhere – in stone, in paintings, in our imaginations. I learned that these foxes are believed to protect the rice fields, a vital part of Japanese culture and history. As we climbed higher, the crowds thinned, and a sense of tranquility settled over us. We found a small side shrine, adorned with tiny ceramic foxes and a miniature torii gate. It was moments like these, away from the hustle and bustle, that truly resonated with me.

After descending from Fushimi Inari, we hopped on a train to Tōfuku-ji Temple. This Zen temple, founded in 1236, is renowned for its stunning autumn foliage, but even in February, its beauty was undeniable. Although the colorful maple leaves that Tofuku-ji is known for were not present this time of year, the temple exuded a serene and peaceful atmosphere. The intricate architecture and the meticulously raked gardens spoke of centuries of tradition and contemplation.

The Hondo, or Main Hall, is a recent structure dating from 1934, and you can view from the outside the central statue of the historical Buddha shining on its altar. We also marveled at the Sanmon Gate, the largest and oldest Zen temple gate in Japan, a designated national treasure that has stood since 1425.

For lunch we enjoyed a delightful meal at Komefuku. The restaurant offered authentic Japanese fare that showcased the rich flavors of seafood and tempura. Each dish was crafted with meticulous attention to detail, and we savored the fresh ingredients prepared in time-honored styles. The staff was very friendly. I tried the succulent sashimi and expertly fried tempura.

Our final stop for the day was Kiyomizu-dera, a temple perched on a hillside offering panoramic views of Kyoto. As we approached, the vibrant red pagoda stood out against the winter sky. The temple is dedicated to Kannon, a deity of mercy and compassion, and I felt a sense of peace wash over me as we entered the main hall.

The wooden stage of Kiyomizu-dera is perhaps its most iconic feature, jutting out over the hillside and offering breathtaking views. Legend has it that if you survive the jump from the stage, your wish will be granted. Of course, jumping is strictly prohibited these days, but the legend adds to the mystique of the place.

One of the legends of Kiyomizu-dera tells of Kannon's compassion, embodying feelings of gratitude for the world, tranquil daily lives, and loved ones. Worshipping Kannon is about taking a hard look at your true self and finding compassion in everyday deeds. It’s a beautiful sentiment that resonated deeply with me.

Before heading back to our hotel, we did a spot of shopping at Daimaru Kyoto Store. This department store is located in Shijo Kawaramachi, surrounded by business districts, close to many attractions in Gion and Higashiyama. I found the food section in the basement to be outstanding, with a wide selection of fresh produce, meat, fish, wines, tea, Western pastries, and wagashi (Japanese sweets).

For dinner, we decided to treat ourselves to a special meal at THE SODOH HIGASHIYAMA KYOTO. This Italian restaurant is set in a beautifully restored traditional Japanese building, once the home of a renowned painter. The ambiance was exquisite, and the food was a fusion of Italian and Japanese flavors.

The staff was very kind and the service was great. The vegan set menu option was delicious. They prepare the food very delicately. The gardens were also beautiful. The restaurant uses seasonal ingredients from Kyoto.

As the day drew to a close, I reflected on the incredible experiences we had shared. From the vibrant torii gates of Fushimi Inari to the serene gardens of Tōfuku-ji and the panoramic views from Kiyomizu-dera, Kyoto had cast its spell on us. It’s a city that seamlessly blends history, spirituality, and natural beauty, leaving an indelible mark on the soul.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore the Philosopher's Path, Gion, and Heian Shrine. I’m particularly excited about strolling along the Philosopher's Path, a canal-side walk that promises to be both scenic and contemplative. And perhaps we’ll end the day with a drink at Bar K6. Until then, o-yasumi nasai (good night) from Kyoto!

I'm so glad I remembered to pack my travel guidebook on Kyoto, it has been so helpful during this trip, however I am kicking myself for forgetting my portable phone charger, it would have come in handy today!
