Cultural Immersion and Family Adventures in Kyoto
Day 2: Kyoto's Bamboo Forest and Mountain Monkeys: A Day of Serenity and Play
Discover the enchanting Arashiyama Bamboo Forest, explore ancient temples, and play with adorable monkeys in Kyoto's scenic mountains.
Embracing Nature's Wonders in Arashiyama
Today was a day of immersion in the tranquil beauty and playful spirit of Kyoto's Arashiyama district. From towering bamboo groves to cheeky mountain monkeys, every moment was a delightful adventure, showcasing the harmonious blend of nature and culture that makes Kyoto so unique. It was a day for the memory books, filled with laughter, awe, and a deep appreciation for the simple joys of life.
Our day began with a hearty vegan breakfast at AIN SOPH. Journey KYOTO. It’s always a treat to find a place that caters so well to plant-based diets, and this cozy spot near Nishiki Market was no exception. Liam and I both opted for their famous 'heavenly' vegan pancakes. Fluffy and light, they were the perfect start to a day of exploring. Fueled up and ready to go, we hopped on a train to Arashiyama, eager to experience its famed bamboo forest.
The train journey itself was an experience, offering glimpses of the Kyoto countryside. I always find it fascinating to observe the subtle changes in landscape as we move from one area to another. Arriving in Arashiyama, the crisp February air greeted us, a refreshing change from the heated train. We bundled up in our warmest layers, knowing that February in Kyoto can be quite chilly, with temperatures often hovering around 5°C (41°F). It's a good thing I remembered to pack my favorite New Zealand wool scarf; it's proven to be quite essential for this trip!
Lost in the Emerald Embrace of Arashiyama Bamboo Forest
As we stepped into the Arashiyama Bamboo Forest, I felt an immediate sense of peace wash over me. Towering stalks of bamboo swayed gently in the breeze, creating a mesmerizing dance of light and shadow. The forest was relatively quiet, which I later learned is a perk of visiting during the winter months. The usual throngs of tourists were noticeably absent, allowing us to fully immerse ourselves in the serene atmosphere. The sunlight filtering through the bamboo created an ethereal glow, making it feel as though we had entered another world.

I couldn't resist snapping photos at every turn, trying to capture the magic of the moment. Liam, ever the patient husband, indulged my photographic whims, even suggesting different angles and compositions. It's moments like these that remind me how lucky I am to have him as my travel partner. We both love to explore and discover new things, and he always supports my creative pursuits. I also made sure to take some photos to use in my food blog, as I want to try and recreate the delicious vegan pancakes we had for breakfast.
The best view comes after the hardest climb.
A Spiritual Pause at Tenryu-ji Temple
Emerging from the bamboo forest, we found ourselves near Tenryu-ji Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Kyoto's five major Zen temples. Intrigued, we decided to explore its grounds. The temple's Sogenchi Garden was a sight to behold, a nationally recognized historic site that exuded tranquility. Even in winter, the garden retained its beauty, with snow accentuating the stark simplicity of the rock formations. I could only imagine how stunning it must be in spring, when the cherry blossoms are in full bloom.

We wandered through the temple complex, admiring the traditional Japanese architecture and the serene atmosphere. Inside the Hojo, the main building, we saw an image of Shakyamuni Buddha, an Important Cultural Property. The Buddha sat on the altar, radiating peace and serenity. It was a moment of quiet contemplation, a chance to reflect on the beauty and impermanence of life. I thought about my own journey, the path that had led me from the lush landscapes of New Zealand to the vibrant streets of Kyoto. It was a humbling experience, reminding me to appreciate the present moment and to embrace whatever the future may hold.
Monkeying Around at Arashiyama Monkey Park Iwatayama
After our spiritual pause, it was time for a bit of lighthearted fun. We made our way to Arashiyama Monkey Park Iwatayama, located on a mountain across the Katsura River. The entrance fee was a reasonable ¥600 JPY for adults, and we eagerly began the 20-minute uphill hike to the park. The trail was a bit steep in places, but the promise of seeing wild monkeys kept us motivated.

As we climbed, we spotted a few monkeys scampering through the trees, their thick winter fur providing insulation against the cold. Finally, we reached the top and were greeted by a troop of approximately 120 Japanese macaques, also known as snow monkeys. Unlike a zoo, this was their natural habitat, and we were stepping into their world. It was an incredible experience to see these creatures up close, observing their interactions and playful antics.
We purchased some monkey food (peanuts and apple slices) for ¥100 and entered the feeding area, a small hut where visitors can safely interact with the monkeys. It was hilarious to watch them reach through the wire mesh, eagerly snatching the treats from our hands. One particularly bold monkey even tried to grab my scarf, mistaking it for food! I quickly learned to keep my belongings close.
Aside from the monkeys, the park also offered panoramic views of Kyoto. From our vantage point, we could see the entire city sprawling before us, a tapestry of traditional buildings and modern skyscrapers. It was a breathtaking sight, a reminder of the unique blend of old and new that defines Kyoto.
A Culinary Conclusion and a Magical Nightcap
By late afternoon, our stomachs were rumbling, so we decided to grab lunch at Arash's Kitchen. After a week of Japanese cuisine, we were both craving something a little different, and this Persian and Indian eatery hit the spot. The kebabs were flavorful and aromatic, and the portions were generous. It was a satisfying meal that warmed us from the inside out.

For dinner, we ventured to Pound Sanjo-Kiyamachi, a restaurant recommended to me by a fellow foodie friend. This was a fantastic choice. I had the tongue sashimi and heart sashimi. Liam had the grilled dishes. The food was delicious and the service was exceptional. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploration and adventure.

As night fell, we decided to check out L'Escamoteur, a bar known for its unique cocktails and magical atmosphere. I had heard great things about this place, and it didn't disappoint. The bartender was a true mixologist, crafting inventive drinks with flair and showmanship. The bar had a cozy, intimate vibe, and we enjoyed chatting with the friendly staff and fellow patrons. It was the perfect spot for a nightcap, a final toast to a day of unforgettable experiences. I felt as though I had been transported to another world, and I didn't want the night to end. I am not a big drinker, but I enjoy the atmosphere of a good bar.

As we made our way back to the hotel, I couldn't help but feel grateful for the day we had experienced. Arashiyama had exceeded all my expectations, offering a perfect blend of natural beauty, cultural immersion, and playful adventure. It was a day I would cherish forever, a reminder of the simple joys of life and the importance of embracing new experiences.
Tomorrow, we're planning to visit Fushimi Inari Taisha, Tōfuku-ji Temple and Kiyomizu-dera. I'm excited to see the thousands of vibrant red torii gates winding up the mountain at Fushimi Inari, and I've heard that Kiyomizu-dera offers stunning views of the city. I'm also looking forward to trying some local cuisine at Kyoto cuisine Teramachi Yoshikura. And, as always, I'll be sure to share all the details with you, my dear readers. Until then, happy travels!
