Finding Beauty in Art and Tradition

Today was a day of contrasts, blending the whimsical artistry of Anima (André Heller Garden) with the grounded traditions of Berber life in the Ourika Valley. Liam and I, along with our friends, set out early, eager to explore the cultural and natural beauty that this region of Morocco had to offer. It’s amazing how much you can pack into a single day when you’re surrounded by such vibrant experiences.

Our morning began with a hearty breakfast at Yassmine Restaurant & Cafe. The aroma of freshly baked bread and strong Moroccan coffee filled the air, setting the perfect tone for the day ahead. I opted for a traditional tagine, savoring the rich flavors and spices that are so characteristic of Moroccan cuisine. Liam went for something lighter, but equally delicious. Fuelled up, we were ready for our first stop: Anima Garden.

Anima (André Heller Garden) is a place where art and nature intertwine in the most delightful way. Designed by multimedia artist André Heller, the garden is a vibrant tapestry of sculptures, installations, and exotic plants. As we wandered through the winding paths, we were constantly surprised by the hidden nooks and unexpected artworks that emerged around every corner.

Art doesn't reproduce what we see; rather, it makes us see.

The creativity on display was truly inspiring. I found myself particularly drawn to the sculptures by Picasso, Haring and Rodin, which seemed to be perfectly at home amidst the lush greenery. The garden is a testament to Heller's vision and his ability to create a space that stimulates the senses and sparks the imagination. Liam, ever the pragmatist, was impressed by the sustainable practices employed in maintaining the garden, noting that it uses no more water than the surrounding farms. It’s reassuring to see such a beautiful place also being environmentally responsible.

After spending a few hours exploring Anima Garden, we hopped back in our car and headed deeper into the Ourika Valley. Our next destination was the Maison du meunier berbère, a traditional Berber miller's house. This historical landmark offered a fascinating glimpse into the daily life and customs of the Berber people. The structure itself was a testament to the ingenuity and resourcefulness of the Berbers, built from local materials and designed to withstand the harsh mountain climate.

Inside, we learned about the process of grinding wheat using a traditional stone mill, a practice that has been passed down through generations. It was humbling to see how much labor and skill went into producing something as simple as flour. The miller, a kind and knowledgeable man, shared stories of his ancestors and the challenges they faced living in this remote valley. It was a truly immersive experience that connected us to the rich cultural heritage of the region.

For lunch, we stopped at Restaurant La Nature, a charming spot nestled in the heart of the valley. The restaurant offered a variety of traditional Moroccan dishes, and we opted for a selection of tagines and salads to share. The food was simple but delicious, and the cozy atmosphere made it the perfect place to relax and recharge after a busy morning. We sat outside, enjoying the stunning views of the surrounding mountains and the gentle sound of the Ourika River flowing nearby.

In the afternoon, we visited the Khalid Tafza Ourika pottery workshop, a hidden gem where we had the opportunity to learn about the ancient art of pottery making. Khalid, the master artisan, greeted us warmly and shared his passion for this traditional craft. He explained that pottery has been a part of Berber culture for over 3,500 years, with techniques passed down through generations.

We all got a chance to try our hand at the pottery wheel, with varying degrees of success. Liam, surprisingly, turned out to be quite the natural, creating a small but perfectly formed bowl. I, on the other hand, struggled to keep the clay centered, resulting in a rather lopsided creation. Despite our mixed results, it was an incredibly fun and rewarding experience. I even bought a small, hand-painted bowl as a souvenir, a reminder of our day spent immersed in Berber culture.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way to La Clé Des Huiles Ourika for dinner. The restaurant is known for its use of local ingredients and traditional cooking methods, and we were eager to sample their fare. The meal was a feast for the senses, with each dish bursting with flavor and aroma. We started with a selection of Moroccan salads, followed by a tagine of lamb with apricots and almonds. The lamb was incredibly tender, and the combination of sweet and savory flavors was simply divine.

After dinner, we sat outside, sipping mint tea and enjoying the cool evening air. The stars twinkled above us, and the only sound was the gentle murmur of the river. It was the perfect ending to a perfect day. Reflecting on our experiences, I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunity to explore this beautiful corner of Morocco and to connect with its rich culture and traditions. Tomorrow, we’re planning to hike to the Ourika Valley Waterfalls, and I’m excited to see what other natural wonders await us.

This trip has been a reminder that travel is not just about seeing new places, but about experiencing new cultures and connecting with the people who call those places home. As we prepare for another day of adventure, I am filled with anticipation for what lies ahead.
