Ourika Valley's Charms

Today was a day of sensory overload in the best possible way. From the cool spray of cascading waterfalls to the delicate aroma of saffron, the Ourika Valley has completely captivated me. Exploring this region with my friends has been an absolute joy, and I can't wait to share all the vibrant experiences we encountered.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Café Restaurant Azaghar Ourika. The tagine was the perfect start, setting us up for a day of adventure. The cafe had a relaxed vibe, the staff were friendly, and it was clear why this place is so popular. It was a great spot to fuel up before heading into the heart of the valley.

Our first major stop was Setti Fadma, and the 7 Cascades. The trek to the waterfalls was invigorating. The path was rocky, and in some places, we had to navigate makeshift bridges over the river, which added to the thrill. It was a bit challenging, but the stunning views made it all worthwhile. I definitely recommend wearing good hiking boots, unlike Liam who thought his sneakers would cut it! The higher we climbed, the more breathtaking the scenery became. The waterfalls themselves were a sight to behold, each cascade offering a refreshing escape from the late summer heat. We even saw some Barbary macaques, which was a real treat.

Sometimes, the most rewarding experiences are those that require a little extra effort.

After our waterfall adventure, we drove to Paradis du Safran Maroc, a saffron plantation run by a Swiss woman named Christine Ferrari. It was fascinating to learn about the cultivation of saffron, often called red gold. Christine explained the meticulous process of harvesting the delicate stigmas from the Crocus sativus flowers. The flowers weren't in bloom yet, as saffron is typically harvested between October and December , but the visit was still incredibly informative. We wandered through the botanical garden, admiring the various herbs and medicinal plants. Christine's passion for saffron and sustainable farming was truly inspiring. And of course, we couldn't leave without buying some of her certified organic saffron. I'm already dreaming of all the culinary creations I can make with it!

For lunch, we stopped at Restaurant Timalizen. The restaurant had a lovely, family-friendly atmosphere. We enjoyed a delicious tagine while soaking in the views of the surrounding mountains and lush greenery. It was the perfect place to relax and refuel after our busy morning. Liam, ever the adventurous eater, tried a local Berber dish and declared it his new favourite.

In the late afternoon, we decided to check out Café restaurant elJawhara vert for a refreshing drink. It was a great spot to unwind and enjoy the serene atmosphere. The cafe had a lovely terrace, perfect for people-watching and taking in the views. We sipped on mint tea, a staple in Moroccan culture, and reflected on our incredible day. The mint tea was so good that I had to have two cups!

As the sun began to set, we headed to Aghbalou House for dinner. This restaurant was a delightful find. The food was delicious, and the ambiance was warm and inviting. We shared stories and laughed about our adventures throughout the day. It was the perfect ending to an unforgettable day in the Ourika Valley. The restaurant had a cozy atmosphere, and the staff were incredibly welcoming.

“The best journeys answer questions that in the beginning, you didn't even think to ask.”

Reflecting on the day, I’m struck by the warmth and hospitality of the Berber people. Their rich culture is woven into the fabric of the valley, and it’s evident in everything from the traditional crafts to the delicious cuisine. It's experiences like these that remind me why I love to travel – the opportunity to connect with different cultures and discover the beauty that exists in our world.

Looking ahead to tomorrow, we're planning to visit Anima (André Heller Garden) and Maison du meunier berbère [if last day of trip, merge in “Trip end”]. I’m excited to see what other hidden gems the Ourika Valley has in store for us. I've heard wonderful things about Anima Garden, and I'm eager to explore its artistic landscapes. Plus, I'm always up for learning more about local traditions, so the Berber mill house should be really insightful. I think Liam is especially excited about visiting the pottery workshop, Khalid Tafza Ourika pottery workshop, he’s been talking about getting some souvenirs! Until then, goodnight from Ourika Valley.
Tomorrow promises new adventures, and I can't wait to share them with you all!

The Ourika Valley in September is simply magical. The weather is perfect for hiking, the landscapes are lush and green, and the Berber culture is vibrant and welcoming. If you're looking for an authentic Moroccan experience, I highly recommend adding this destination to your travel list.

I’m so glad I remembered to pack my camera, because every corner of this valley is picture-perfect. I did, however, forget my sunglasses, so I might need to pick up a pair at the Khalid Tafza Ourika pottery workshop tomorrow!

As I sit here, writing this blog post, I can't help but feel grateful for this incredible journey. Traveling with friends makes every experience even more special, and I'm so lucky to have these amazing people by my side. The Ourika Valley has touched my heart in so many ways, and I know I'll cherish these memories for a lifetime.
