First Impressions of Ourika Valley

The first day of our adventure in Morocco’s Ourika Valley was nothing short of enchanting. From the moment we arrived, the vibrant culture and stunning landscapes captivated us. It's a sensory overload in the best possible way, and I couldn't wait to dive in and share it all with you.

Our journey from Marrakech to the Ourika Valley was a scenic prelude to the adventures that awaited us. The road wound through charming villages, offering glimpses of traditional Moroccan life. As we approached the valley, the landscape transformed into lush greenery, a welcome contrast to the arid surroundings of Marrakech. The foothills of the Atlas Mountains provided a breathtaking backdrop, setting the stage for a day filled with exploration and cultural immersion.

Aromatic Start at Cafe Restaurant TILILA GARDEN

Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Cafe Restaurant TILILA GARDEN. The traditional Moroccan breakfast was a feast for the senses, featuring an array of local delicacies. We savored freshly baked bread, accompanied by flavorful jams, local honey and olives. Of course, no Moroccan breakfast is complete without a steaming pot of mint tea, which we sipped while enjoying the serene garden views. The atmosphere was tranquil, providing the perfect start to our exploration of the Ourika Valley.

Fuelled and ready, we set off to explore the valley. September in Ourika Valley is simply perfect. The daytime temperatures hover around a pleasant 26°C, cooling down to around 14°C at night. The sun shone brightly, casting a golden glow over the landscape, and a gentle breeze rustled through the trees. The weather was ideal for outdoor activities, and we were eager to make the most of it.

Sensory Exploration at bio-aromatique de l'Ourika Garden

Next on our itinerary was a visit to the bio-aromatique de l'Ourika Garden, a hidden gem nestled in the heart of the valley. As a lover of sustainable living and natural beauty, I was particularly excited about this stop. The garden is a sensory paradise, filled with a diverse collection of aromatic plants, herbs, and flowers.

We wandered through the winding paths, inhaling the intoxicating scents of lavender, rosemary, and mint. The air was alive with the buzzing of bees, flitting from flower to flower, and the vibrant colors of the blooms created a visual feast. The garden is dedicated to showcasing the region's diverse plant species, and we learned about the various medicinal and culinary uses of the herbs and plants.

One of the highlights was the opportunity to sample some of the garden's herbal teas. We gathered under a traditional nomad tent, sipping on a fragrant blend of local herbs. The tea was incredibly refreshing, and the peaceful surroundings made it all the more enjoyable. Liam, ever the curious one, peppered our guide with questions about the different plants and their properties. I made a mental note to try and recreate some of these blends back home in Kelowna.

The beauty of the Ourika Valley lies not only in its landscapes but in the warmth and resilience of its people.

Lunch with a View at Chez Larbi Ourika Restaurant Maison d'hôtes

For lunch, we headed to Chez Larbi Ourika Restaurant Maison d'hôtes, a charming establishment known for its authentic Moroccan cuisine and stunning views. The restaurant is nestled in a lush, green setting, with panoramic views of the valley. The architecture pays homage to Berber culture, creating an immersive and authentic dining experience.

We were warmly greeted by the staff and seated at a table overlooking the valley. The menu featured a variety of traditional Moroccan dishes, and we decided to try the tagine, a slow-cooked stew that is a staple of Moroccan cuisine. The tagine was bursting with flavor, the tender meat infused with aromatic spices and herbs. We also sampled some local salads and freshly baked bread, all of which were delicious.

The ambiance at Chez Larbi was relaxed and inviting, and we lingered over our meal, savoring the food and the views. It was the perfect place to unwind and recharge before continuing our exploration of the Ourika Valley. I took some food photos, knowing my blog readers would love to see the vibrant colors and textures of the dishes.

Shopping for Treasures at Ourika Chic

In the afternoon, we indulged in a bit of retail therapy at Ourika Chic, a local shop known for its unique selection of Moroccan crafts and souvenirs. As someone who appreciates handmade goods and supports local artisans, I was eager to see what treasures I could find.

The shop was filled with an array of colorful textiles, intricate pottery, and handcrafted jewelry. I was particularly drawn to the Berber carpets, with their vibrant patterns and rich textures. We spent some time browsing the selection, admiring the skill and artistry of the local artisans. I picked up a beautiful handwoven scarf, its soft wool perfect for the Kelowna autumns, and Liam found a striking piece of pottery to add to his collection.

Shopping at Ourika Chic was more than just buying souvenirs; it was an opportunity to support the local community and take home a piece of Moroccan culture. I chatted with the shop owner, learning about the traditions and techniques behind the crafts. It’s these personal connections that make traveling so rewarding.

Sunset Dinner at La muraille de l'ourika

As the day drew to a close, we made our way to La muraille de l'ourika for dinner, a restaurant renowned for its stunning views of the valley. The restaurant is perched on a hillside, offering panoramic vistas of the surrounding landscape. The setting was magical, with the sun casting a warm glow over the valley as we arrived.

We were seated at a table overlooking the valley and ordered a selection of Moroccan dishes to share. The food was delicious, and the views were simply breathtaking. As we ate, we watched the sunset paint the sky in hues of orange, pink, and purple. It was a perfect ending to a perfect day.

Reflecting on our first day in the Ourika Valley, I am filled with a sense of gratitude and excitement. The valley is a true gem, offering a unique blend of natural beauty, cultural richness, and warm hospitality. From the aromatic gardens to the traditional Berber villages, every corner of the valley has something to offer.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore Setti Fadma and its famous waterfalls, as well as visit Paradis du Safran Maroc. I can't wait to see what adventures await us as we delve deeper into the heart of the Ourika Valley. I made sure to fully charge my camera, not wanting to miss a single photo opportunity!

The Ourika Valley has a gentler climate than Marrakech. As the air becomes more breathable, you attain an altitude of 15°C to 20°C lower than in Marrakech. Nature is especially abundant in the village of Tafza, where you can also discover the Berber ecomuseum. The museum makes you taste the flavors of the lifestyle of the Berber civilization in the valley.

As we drove back to our guesthouse, Liam and I chatted about our favorite moments from the day. We both agreed that the Ourika Valley had exceeded our expectations. It was a reminder of why we love to travel: to experience new cultures, connect with nature, and create lasting memories. I can't wait to share more of our adventures with you all. Stay tuned for tomorrow's post!
