Family Adventure to Naoshima's Art Island
Day 7: Art, Heartbeats, and Black Sea Bream: A Day of Discovery on Naoshima
Immerse yourself in Naoshima's art scene, from Miyanoura Gallery 6 to Les Archives du Cœur, and savor local flavors in a picturesque setting.
A Day of Artistic Immersion
Today was a day of wandering through the less-trodden paths of Naoshima, a journey that took me from contemporary art archives to the heartbeats of strangers and the quirky charm of local craftsmanship. It’s amazing how much this island continues to surprise me, even on day seven. The weather was kind, a mix of sunshine and clouds, perfect for exploring without the harsh heat.
Our day began with breakfast at Little Plum. The café was a cozy spot, the kind where locals and tourists mingle seamlessly. I opted for a simple Japanese breakfast set, while Sri enjoyed a strong coffee to kickstart her day. Bagus, ever the adventurous eater, tried the wild boar sausage.
From there, we headed to Miyanoura Gallery 6. The gallery itself is housed in a renovated pachinko parlor, a quirky transformation that speaks volumes about Naoshima's commitment to blending art with everyday life. The Setouchi “ ” Archive Project was underway, showcasing materials related to the Seto Inland Sea's landscape, culture, and history. It was fascinating to see how artist Motoyuki Shitamichi collaborated with locals and experts to present new perspectives on the island. The natural sunlight filtering through the ceiling louvers created an ever-changing ambiance, making the experience even more special. Bagus was particularly intrigued by the old photographs and documents, sparking a conversation about the island's past.

The echoes of human existence, captured in art and memories, resonate deeply on this island of creativity and reflection.
Next on our itinerary was Les Archives du Cœur. This was perhaps the most profound experience of the day. Christian Boltanski's installation is a collection of recorded heartbeats from people around the world. Walking through the dimly lit rooms, listening to the rhythmic thump of countless hearts, was incredibly moving. Sri and I decided to record our heartbeats, adding our own rhythm to the archive. It felt like contributing a tiny piece of ourselves to a larger, universal story. Bagus, initially skeptical, was visibly touched by the experience, remarking on the raw vulnerability of it all.

After such an emotionally charged visit, we needed a change of pace. Lunch at Tee's DELI GROCERY was just what we needed. This quirky diner, open only on select days, served up delicious falafel sandwiches. The atmosphere was laid-back, with cool tunes playing in the background. It was a perfect spot to unwind and recharge before our next adventure. We chatted with some fellow travelers, sharing stories and tips about Naoshima.

Our afternoon took us to the Miyanoura Port, where we encountered Chinu - the Black Sea Bream of Uno. This giant sculpture, made entirely of recycled materials, was a whimsical and thought-provoking sight. It was a reminder of the importance of sustainability and the power of art to transform discarded objects into something beautiful. Bagus, with his keen interest in environmental issues, spent a good amount of time examining the sculpture, pointing out the various items used in its construction.

Before dinner, I wanted to visit Mikazukishoten. I had heard they have some amazing coffee. The shop was small and quaint, and the aroma of freshly brewed coffee filled the air. I tried their signature blend, a rich and flavorful espresso that was exactly what I needed. Sri picked up some souvenirs, while Bagus chatted with the owner about coffee beans and brewing techniques. The owner was also very keen to tell us about the T-shirts and other goods on sale, which are locally produced.
