Echoes of Nagasaki's Past

Today was a day of stepping back in time, wandering through the historical heart of Nagasaki. From the meticulously preserved Glover Garden to the vibrant streets of Nagasaki Shinchi Chinatown, each location offered a unique glimpse into the city's rich and diverse heritage. It's incredible how much history is packed into this single city, a testament to its role as a gateway between Japan and the rest of the world. It felt like piecing together fragments of a beautiful, complex story.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Joyfull Nagasaki Tsukimachi. While the name might not scream 'local experience', it was a convenient and comforting start, fueling us up for a day of exploration. Erika appreciated the familiar Western options, while Lena opted for a traditional Japanese breakfast set. It's these small moments of blending the familiar with the new that make our family trips so special. I opted for the Japanese breakfast as well, a reminder of my roots, and a good way to prepare me mentally for the day ahead.

Our first stop was Glover Garden, a place I'd been particularly eager to visit. As we ascended via the 'Grabber Sky Road' – a diagonal elevator, which was a marvel in itself – the views of Nagasaki Port began to unfold. It reminded me of climbing the hills in Heidelberg, though the scenery was distinctly Japanese. The garden is a collection of relocated Western-style houses from the Meiji era, offering a fascinating look into the lives of foreign merchants who played a significant role in Nagasaki's modernization. The former Glover Residence, the oldest Western-style wooden building in Japan, was particularly impressive. I could almost imagine Thomas Blake Glover himself, a Scottish merchant who contributed to Japan's shipbuilding and coal mining industries, strolling through his garden, contemplating his next venture. Lena, with her keen interest in architecture, was captivated by the intricate details of each building, while Erika enjoyed the panoramic views, commenting on how the terraced landscape reminded her of vineyards back in Germany.

History is not a burden on the memory but an illumination of the soul.

Walking through Glover Garden, I couldn't help but reflect on my own journey from Matsumoto to Heidelberg. Like those foreign merchants, I too had crossed borders and cultures, seeking new opportunities and experiences. Perhaps that's why I feel such a strong connection to places like this, where different worlds converge and create something unique. The 'Heart Stones' scattered throughout the garden added a touch of whimsy to our visit. Legend has it that touching one brings good luck in love, and finding all three ensures happiness. Lena, ever the romantic, made sure to touch each one, giggling as she shared her hopes for the future. I smiled, remembering when Erika and I first met, a chance encounter that changed the course of my life. It seems that love, like history, often unfolds in unexpected ways.

Next, we ventured to Dejimaomotemonbashi Park, a reminder of Nagasaki's historical ties with the Dutch. Dejima was once an artificial island, a trading post where the Dutch were confined during Japan's era of isolation. Although the island itself is no longer there, the park commemorates its significance as Japan's sole window to the West during that period. Standing on the bridge that once connected Dejima to the mainland, I imagined the bustling activity that must have taken place here centuries ago, the exchange of goods and ideas that shaped Nagasaki's identity.

For lunch, we headed to Shikairou Chinese Restaurant, the birthplace of Champon noodles. This hearty noodle dish, created in 1899 to cater to Chinese students studying in Nagasaki, has become a local specialty. The restaurant itself is an institution, with a history as rich as the broth in its signature dish. As we slurped down our Champon, filled with pork, seafood, and vegetables, I couldn't help but appreciate the cultural fusion that defines Nagasaki's cuisine. Erika, always adventurous when it comes to food, declared it one of the best noodle dishes she'd ever tasted. Lena, however, was more interested in the Champon museum located on the second floor of the restaurant, eager to learn more about the dish's origins and evolution.

Our final stop of the day was Nagasaki Shinchi Chinatown, the oldest Chinatown in Japan. This vibrant district, filled with the aroma of Chinese spices and the sounds of lively chatter, is a testament to the enduring influence of Chinese culture in Nagasaki. As we strolled through the narrow streets, lined with shops selling everything from traditional Chinese medicine to colorful silk garments, I felt as though I had been transported to another world. The history of this area is fascinating; originally, it was the location of warehouses for Chinese merchants who traded goods with Japan from the 15th to 19th centuries. During the Edo period, Chinese traders were restricted to a dedicated district, reflecting the complex relationship between Japan and China at the time. We sampled various street foods, from steamed buns to crispy dumplings, each bite a burst of flavor. Lena, captivated by the intricate details of the Chinese gates guarding the entrances to Chinatown, spent ages taking photographs, determined to capture the essence of this unique cultural enclave.

Before dinner, I decided to visit IRISH PUB NAGASAKI, a place recommended by a fellow antique enthusiast back in Heidelberg. It was an unexpected find, a little slice of Ireland in the heart of Japan. I enjoyed a pint of Guinness while chatting with the friendly bartender, who shared stories about Nagasaki's nightlife and local attractions. It was a reminder that even in the most foreign of places, you can always find a sense of familiarity and camaraderie.

For dinner, we indulged in a traditional Shippoku meal at Kagetsu, a restaurant with over five centuries of history. Shippoku is a unique Nagasaki cuisine that blends Japanese, Chinese, and Western influences, reflecting the city's multicultural heritage. The meal was a feast for the senses, a series of beautifully presented dishes that showcased the finest local ingredients and culinary techniques. From tempura to braised pork, each course was a delight. The atmosphere at Kagetsu was elegant and refined, a world away from the bustling streets of Chinatown. It was a fitting end to a day of exploring Nagasaki's historical and cultural treasures. As we savored the last bite of our meal, I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunity to share these experiences with my family. These are the moments that we will cherish for years to come, memories that will bind us together and enrich our lives.

Tomorrow, we plan to delve even deeper into Nagasaki's history with a visit to the Hashima Coal Mine Ruins, also known as Gunkanjima, or Battleship Island. This abandoned island, once a thriving coal mining community, offers a haunting glimpse into Japan's industrial past. I am also keen to visit the Nagasaki City Museum of History and Folklore to get a better understanding of the local culture.

As I reflect on today's adventures, I am struck by the resilience and vibrancy of Nagasaki. Despite its tragic history, the city has emerged as a beacon of cultural exchange and historical preservation. It's a place where the past and the present coexist, where different worlds converge, and where the human spirit triumphs over adversity. I am honored to be able to share this journey with my family, and I look forward to discovering even more of Nagasaki's hidden gems in the days to come.

Back at the Richmond Hotel Nagasaki Shianbashi, I am writing this blog post with a sense of contentment. The hotel, with its modern amenities and convenient location, has been a welcome respite after a long day of sightseeing. Erika is already asleep, while Lena is busy editing her photographs, eager to share them with her friends back home. I smile, knowing that these memories will last a lifetime.

Before I turn in for the night, I must remember to buy an umbrella and a Japanese phrasebook tomorrow. Those forgotten essentials would have been useful today, especially when navigating the crowded streets of Chinatown. But even without them, we managed to have a wonderful day, immersing ourselves in the history and culture of this fascinating city. Goodnight, Nagasaki. I look forward to seeing what tomorrow brings.
